Conscious and black, meet the enemy.
I don’t always have the strength to be revolutionary, there are days I hate that I have to be.
Because that’s our reality, to be conscious and black is to be at war. It’s to know that you are that troublesome one at work.
It’s to know that your work won’t speak for itself. It’s to be aware that you are rare, but that isn’t a compliment.
I could write tales of how I don’t make conversation lightly. How everyone is a prospective enemy, because some black people would rather exist within the system than without it.
Some days I don’t blame them, some days I wish I could live with not being seen as a person, some days I wish I was okay with white people exercising privileges they killed my ancestors to get over me. I could smile with them and not feel disgusted.
And what I am is awake. That’s not just a simple social media phrase I get to throw around to obtain followers. That’s my life.
I am awake to the fact that I have to pay my rent. I have to help my sister take care of my mother. I have to feed and clothe myself.
To do this, means I have to tolerate superior incompetence. I have to swallow the fact that I am more qualified for a position but won’t get it, because….
Black and Conscious doesn’t carry the right currency.
To be black and conscious is to be the enemy. It is to be at a war with a system that relies on your compliance to sustain it. To be black and conscious is be a threat, it is to be an outsider and often alone. It’s not being able to trust in simplicity, it is to understand that there is complexity built into everything.
It is to know, that this is the path. There are no negotiations or comfort in war. Freedom is costly and it does not come easy.
But it is NECESSARY. They have made it necessary.
It was not their intention but we are a by-product of a system that would seek to destroy us. What those in power did not foresee, it that we would destroy and those who would seek to protect it.
