August 20, 1938 In the Yankees’ 11-3 rout of the A’s at Shibe Park, first baseman Lou Gehrig hits the final grand slam of his career. The first inning blast, given up by Philadelphia’s right-hander Buck Ross, extends Gehrig’s major league record for grand slams to 23.
August 15, 1999 In the first frame of Anaheim’s 10-2 victory over Detroit, Chuck Finley becomes the first major league pitcher in history to strike out four batters in one inning twice in his career. The Angels’ southpaw also accomplished the feat against the Yankees earlier in the season on May 12.
August 12, 1974 En route to a 4-2 victory over Boston, Angels’ right-hander Nolan Ryan strikes out a major league record 19 batters. It will be the second of three 19-K performances for Ryan this season.
August 3, 1959 In the second All-Star Game played this summer, Yogi Berra’s two-run homer off Dodgers right-hander Don Drysdale in the third inning proves to be the difference in the American League’s 5-3 victory over the NL. The home run will be the last one hit by a Yankee in an All-Star game until Derek Jeter goes deep in 2001, 42 years later.
August 9, 1975 Davey Lopes steals his 32nd consecutive base without being caught, breaking Max Carey’s 1922 record in the Dodgers’ 2-0 victory over New York. The Dodger second baseman’s mark will be broken by Vince Coleman in 1989.
August 2, 2010 Washington catcher Ivan Rodriguez becomes the fifth player to collect 300 home runs while catching when he goes deep off Rodrigo Lopez leading off the second inning of the Nationals’ 3-1 victory in Arizona. Pudge joins Hall of Famers Mike Piazza, Carlton Fisk, Johnny Bench, and Yogi Berra as the only catchers in baseball history to reach the plateau while playing behind the dish.
