Started showing my wife Orphan Black last night and god. Maybe it's because I watched in high school but I really did not appreciate enough the fact that Sarah Manning is a Protagonist Of All Time right out of the gate. Amoral ruthlessly resourceful grifter. Absent mom. Willing to chug soap and make herself throw up to maintain a con. Saw a woman identical to her jump in front of a train and leapt straight to identity theft and faking her own death with zero hesitation. Like yeah I'm probably a clone being hunted by a shadowy organization but I got a scam to run so I don't have time for that. Absolutely no notes complete banger of a character.

It honestly is soooo impressive what Orphan Black was able to achieve with the scenes with multiple clones because like this was a relatively low-budget little show from over 10 years ago and the Clone Club dance scene still lives in my brain

I think this show changed my brain chemistry. I struggle more to tell distinct actors apart on shows sometimes because of facial blindness-esque stuff but I always knew exactly which clone was which. Tatiana Maslaney, my goodness.

when i watched orphan black i legit forgot half the time that half the cast was tatiana maslany and was thinking about the show like there were different actresses for all the clones

YES. it's truly incredible because it's not simply stylistic choices which differentiate the characters (like alison's straight bangs or sarah's black eyeshadow) or accents (mika's and helena's being the most obvious), but the detailed mannerisms. when looking at the photos of the "clones" you don't actually feel that impressed (at least i didn't). they are still the same woman, her face and features distinguishable. it's when you are watching her act that you forget. sarah impersonating beth is different from beth. cosima is horrible as alison and alison is far too theatrical when sarah. a lot of acting relies on audience's suspension of disbelief (why is this x famous actor in my historical romance?), but tatiana is so good you keep forgetting what she looks like. she is forcefully immersing you.

beth when she is driven completely mad by the conspiracy surrounding them, trapped in a loveless relationship with a man who is spying on her for her creators. who won't leave her but will never truly be with her. seeing sarah while she is litterally at the edge, not knowing that moments after she steps off of the platform her life will be stolen. a naive clone who takes her place to make a better life for her daughter by stealing the protection fund put in place by one of their own. the one who paul will fall in love with. the one who can handle it all better than she could, who can protect them better than she could, who is more than she ever could have been. a beth who doesnt need the pills, with a daughter of her own, with people who love her.
