˖˚⊹ ꣑ৎ You guys!! I haven’t written in a while, and English is not my first language. I also realise this is probably shorter than what you would expect from an x reader fanfiction, but don’t worry, I do want to try and write a part 2. I hope you enjoy! Amaze Amaze Amaze! ꣑ৎ ⊹˚ ˖
𖥔 ݁ ˖‧₊˚ ⋅ ABOUT: You’re the new English teacher at school and Ryland Grace being Ryland Grace, he shows a lot of kindness towards you. We’re all wondering where this is going! — fluff, tried to remain gender neutral (and hope I did a good job) 𖥔 ݁ ˖‧₊˚ ⋅

You sit at your desk and let out a sigh. It had been a week and a half since you had moved to join the teaching staff of Grover Cleveland Middle School. You had had to move, in just a couple of days, to then meet the school staff, to then get a full day of reminders on expectations and rules, before, well… getting thrown out there, to start classes. Luckily, the previous English teacher wasn’t the kind of teacher the kids would be missing a whole lot. You had overheard that teacher was strict, and “like, so not cool.”
The beginning of the school year was always chaotic. The beginning of the school year in a new school, as the new teacher, was a little worse. Your desk was filled with books, so much so that you almost disappeared behind them. There also were a ton of papers, pens, sticky notes, and whatever snacks you had been able to grab when you rushed out of your apartment in the morning.
You felt like you were drowning, and the state of your desk told that exact story. Though in a way, there was a sort of comfort in being hidden away by the mountain of items that surrounded you. You put your head in your hands, allowing yourself a deeper breath. The kids were great. Honestly, they were awesome. But that first week had been exhausting.
The classroom facing yours was Ryland Grace’s. You had met him, briefly. He was pretty obviously introverted and maybe a little shy, but every time you and him had crossed paths, you exchanged a nod and a smile. You both were simply being cordial, nothing more, nothing less.
What you did not know was that he actually was the “cool teacher”; and he had to live up to expectations. That’s what he told himself when he knocked on your classroom door, interrupting your quiet pity party. In truth, he simply knew what it was like to be the new teacher, and he wanted to show that, as hard as it may feel at this time… it would get better.
“Knock Knock?” He says as he politely opens the door. He notices the top of your head, behind all the books. He even fails to keep it to himself:
“Woah, that’s a lot of… Books.”
His teasing smile fades as he realises the state you are in. A good thing was that you weren’t crying, and you didn’t look completely depressed. You were just… Defeated.
Still, you tried to keep up appearances. You smile back; softly.
“Yes, I uh… I’ve been running everywhere today, I haven’t had time to really organise all my things.
- Y/N Y/L/N, right? I’m Ryland Grace, we saw each other very quickly the other day.” He says, offering a handshake.
You shake his hand with a smile. You remembered him, of course. Not just for his kindness or his pretty face, though he did have a lot of charm. No, you remembered him because he had been the most genuine person in the whole school staff. Even if your introduction had been brief, he had never failed to acknowledge you ever since that day.
“I remember, yes. You’re the science teacher, I believe?
- I am. Why, did the kids say something about me?”
“Only good things. They absolutely adore you. Are you the cool teacher, is that what it is?”
He shrugs with a small, proud smirk.
“I mean, I guess yeah… But enough about me— you, are the new teacher. How has it been?
- It’s been good, thank you for asking. It’s, uh… yeah, it’s been going pretty good.
- Good! I know it can be a little overwhelming at first, so I wanted to… check in.
- Oh, definitely. It’s been a lot but I’m hanging on.”
You tried so hard to be positive and cordial. It took a lot of efforts to not let your lack of confidence peak through. The truth was this: you had not even finished unpacking, you were still figuring out your classes’ content, you had absolutely zero time to yourself, you hadn’t eaten a nice dinner in forever, and even showers weren’t long enough to be relaxing. You were living in a rush, all day, every day.
It was kind of him to check in on you, though you were not too sure what to tell him. Before a long and awkward silence could creep in, Ryland straightened up and smiled. He pointed to the door behind him with his thumb and excused himself:
“Well, I don’t want to bother you any longer so, if there’s anything you need, you know where to find me. Don’t hesitate.”
A couple days had passed since that conversation, and even though it seemed like you always managed to somehow cross each other’s paths, all you ever shared was a quiet smile and a wave. You had never really felt comfortable with going to Ryland by fear of bothering him, even for a casual conversation, and he didn’t want you to feel pressured in talking to him. Things were professional, and the both of you were okay with that.
However, the students… Well, the students were still kids. If you were honest with yourself, you were pretty bad at hiding your emotions and facial expressions. And kids are pretty good at observing. It’s all they do, frankly: they stare at everything and everyone, to try and get “all the tea” -or whatever it was they said nowadays. Of course, they had absolutely noticed the way your cheeks would turn just slightly more pink when Ryland would smile at you from across the hallway. And when you felt it happen, you would try to play it cool, to shrug it off. You tried so, so hard. But the kids were not having it. There was no way you could bullshit them on that.
Was completely oblivious.
He didn’t notice anything, didn’t think anything about the smiles and the fact that sometimes, the waving got slightly awkward and hesitant and shy… nope.
Ryland Grace had absolutely zero clue you had started to develop a… crush.
You were barely done with the class that you sat down and immediately started reading through the short essays the students had written. You finally knew them, their personalities and their styles a little more, and you were very eager to know what they had come up with. As you read briefly the first couple of papers, you started smiling. Those kids were good. Both in the academic sense, but also just as kids. They listened -most of the time. They usually stayed focused, and they asked so many questions. You were still recovering from the move, but at least by now, school had gotten fun again. And to make things even better, the kids were now joking around about you stealing the spotlight from Ryland, as the cool teacher.
As you noticed you had the next hour free, you felt your stomach growling. You definitely needed some lunch. You put the papers away, tidied up your desk, and got out of the classroom, still thinking about how amazing it was that you had just gotten here, and the kids already treated you like a rock star.
“Oh, I’m sorry”, you say as your shoulder bumps into Ryland’s, making him drop his books. You immediately lean down to grab it for him, but he is faster than you. He smiles and as he stands back up, he puts his hand on your shoulder. The feeling of his hand gently squeezing your shoulder is warm and reassuring.
- Yeah, I wasn’t looking, sorry about that. Had my, uh… head in the clouds, I guess.”
You see him hesitate. His previous partner -and only, really- had left him specifically for that reason. She thought he had his head in the clouds too much. Ryland never saw it as a bad thing.
“That’s fine! What’s on your mind?
- Oh, it’s nothing crazy, really…
- Well, my next class is in two hours, so… if you’ve got some time, I’ve got plenty.”
For the first time, Ryland asked you to just… casually hang out?
