Two-Headed Calf
by Laura Gilpin
Tomorrow when the farm boys find this freak of nature, they will wrap his body in newspaper and carry him to the museum.
But tonight he is alive and in the north field with his mother. It is a perfect summer evening: the moon rising over the orchard, the wind in the grass. And as he stares into the sky, there are twice as many stars as usual.
“Almost every woman I have ever met has a secret belief that she is just on the edge of madness, that there is some deep, crazy part within her, that she must be on guard constantly against ‘losing control’—of her temper, of her appetite, of her sexuality, of her feelings, of her ambition, of her secret fantasies, of her mind.”

FEMALE by Patti Smith (1967) female. feel male. Ever since I felt the need to choose I'd choose male. I felt boy rythums when I was in knee pants. So I stayed in pants. I sobbed when I had to use the public ladies room. My undergarments made me blush. Every feminine gesture I affected from my mother humiliated me. I ran around with a pack of wolves. I puked on every pinafore. Growing breasts was a nightmare. In agner I cut off my hair and knelt glassy eyed before god. I begged him to place me in my own barbaric race. The male race. The race of my choice. In answer he injected me with all the characteristics of my gender. sultry. languid. wanton. dip into summer skirts. go down with a narrow hipped boy behind a bowling alley. bleed. come. fill my womb. the misfit massacres the mustang pony just to feel the soft rise of marilyn monroe against his chest. bloated. pregnant. I crawl thru the sand. like a lame dog. like a crab. pull my fat baby belly to the sea. pure edge. pull my hair out by the roots. roll and drag and claw like a bitch. like a bitch. like a bitch.

“She had known happiness, exquisite happiness, intense happiness, and it silvered the rough waves a little more brightly, as daylight faded, and the blue went out of the sea and it rolled in waves of pure lemon which curved and swelled and broke upon the beach and the ecstasy burst in her eyes and waves of pure delight raced over the floor of her mind and she felt, It is enough! It is enough!” — Virginia Woolf, from “To The Lighthouse,”
Non-Magical Benefits from Witchcraft!
Hey there my Witchlings! I want to show my fellow Skeptics real benefits that you can experience with practicing witchcraft without being a full believer in magic or the metaphysical!
Grounding can help you calm yourself down when you are anxious.
Doing rituals and spells are a great way to help create a physical reminder of what you want in life.
Crystals make excellent worry stones for you to stim with.
Some herbs can actually help relieve common illness symptoms (but they cannot cure illnesses).
Meditation can help you practice visualization, which is useful for artists!
Learning about witchcraft can help you understand other cultures and the way they interacted with spirituality. Education is always a benefit imo.
Spell jars help to remind you of goals.
Manifesting is a detailed way of putting out what you want to achieve in your life and reminding you what you want. It's just like setting a goal plan (please don't forget to actually act on whatever you're manifesting though).
Creating an Altar Space can create a calming place for you to relax.
If you have a deity, or you work with spirits, you can vent your problems to them and get things off your chest.
Having a ritual routine can help you create a schedule, or stick to a schedule, which can be beneficial for mental health.
Listening to Reiki ASMR is surprisingly peaceful and can reduce anxiety as well as help calm you or ground you.
Introspection is very important in witchcraft, and it's also just important in general, understanding yourself, your core beliefs, will help you.
And there are many more! Witchcraft "works" in many ways, so, now that we know that, we can have fun even while remaining skeptical.
sometimes when i go for a walk i look at the sky and realize that i really love earth & nature like i just get this really nice feel. i love it
Luck Spell
You will need:
3 small green stones
a green leaf from any variety of plant or tree*
a green candle
3 strands of your hair
a small bowl of spring/river/stream water
a small cloth bag or a paper envelope
This spell should be worked on the night of a full moon, as close to midnight as possible.
Light the candle and place it on a flat surface such as a tabletop. Place the bowl of water between you and the candle. Place the stones, leaf and strands of your hair in the bowl of water. Speak the following words aloud:
On this night, I ask the moon, Daughter in the sky, Bring me luck, and bring it soon, Before this night goes by.
Pick up the candle and drop a couple of drops of melted wax into the bowl of water. Extinguish the candle. Place the bowl where it will catch the light of the moon. You will only need to expose it for the one night of the full moon.
On the following morning, immediately remove all items from the water and place them in an area to dry on their own. Once the items are dry, place them in the cloth bag or paper envelope and close the bag/envelope. Carry the bag or envelope with you for luck.
*y’know, except not poison ivy/oak/etc. be careful!
Study Success Spell
You Will Need:
1 Yellow candle
1 Green candle
1 piece of yellow ribbon, or yarn, or thread, or pipecleaner
1 piece of green ribbon, or yarn, or thread, or pipecleaner
1 piece of orange ribbon, or yarn, or thread, or pipecleaner
Oil (such as cinnamon, clove, or bergamot) made for luck or success
If you cast a circle during spell work, you can do this now. Light first the yellow candle, then the green. Make sure there’s enough room to work between the two. Invoke your God/dess (es). Take the three pieces of ribbon/yarn/thread/pipe cleaner (all long enough to make a bracelet for) and begin to braid them. The yellow, for intelligence and clarity; the green for luck; and the orange for success. As you braid them, you can imagine symbols of studying, intelligence and remembering being thread in as well. (For example, I thought of most of my polyatomic ions, a book, a brain…) Ask the God/dess (es) to help you for your test, and help for your studying. Ask them to help you remember all you can, and to make studying easier. Once you finish braiding, run a little of the oil over the place where you will tie it, and tie the bracelet (or anklet I suppose) around your wrist (ankle) and wear it when you study and during your test.

Flames Within (Motivation, Passion)
Give yourself a magical perk-up and shine with the energy of fire. Materials:
Red candle
Glass of red wine
Cinnamon (powdered)
You can use non-alcoholic wine or even juice, if you prefer. Pour the wine into a nice glass and add a small sprinkle of cinnamon to it. Dip your finger into the wine and give it a little stir.
Run your wet fingertip around the rim of the glass until you hear a ringing tone. Watch the candle flame and visualize it shining out from within yourself.
Drink the glass of wine and feel its warmth flow through you. Place the empty glass next to the candle and allow the candle to burn itself out.
Motivation Charm Bag
Need some extra energy? Motivation? Creativity? This charm bag is intended to do all that and help you get stuff done.
You will need:
Motivation: Purple Statice or Lemon
Creativity: Ginger, Nutmeg, or Vervain
Energy: Chamomile or Carnation
Quartz Crystal of your choice
Study Buddy Charm/Test-Taking Charm
I have ADHD, and I find focusing and studying very hard at times. I know I’m not the only one, so I’ve created this spell for a charmed “study buddy”/trinket that is designed to help with schoolwork and focus.
You Will Need:
The object that you are going to charm. It should be small enough to fit in your pocket and inconspicuous enough that your teachers won’t take it away if you’ve put it on your desk during a test. Jewelry and accessories also work!
A quiet space to do your magic in. No outside distractions!
A white or green candle. These are just the colors I personally associate with learning/focus, if you associate them with a different color then feel free to use a candle it that color. An online substitution or a phone app works just fine.
Incense or a scented oil that helps with clarity and focus (optional). These can include: rosemary, mint, sage, and angelica.
What To Do:
Gather and cleanse all of your materials. I’d recommend visualizing a white, purifying light around them, or putting them in salt for 24 hours.
If you have it, light the incense or put the oil in the diffuser. This well help set your intentions, but it’s not necessary.
Light the candle.
Take your object. Hold it so it is lit by candlelight, then say: “This object will help me study. It will help me during tests. It will guide me towards the right answers, and help me to focus.” If you want to, you can substitute your own words, just as long as they state your intentions for the charm. If you are gifting this to a friend (make sure you have their permission!), be sure to state who it is for. If you’re into visualization, visualize the object being filled with focusing and grounding energies.
Snuff out or blow out the candle. Never leave a lit candle unattended! Same goes for burning incense.
Done! Place the charm on the table where you are studying or taking a test. If anyone asks, just tell them it’s a good luck charm.
From infusions and tinctures to oils and salves: The basics of herbal healing and the beginnings of any potion.
Decoction: A decoction is needed to extract the deeper essence from harder substances such as barks, roots and stems. Place the raw materials in a pot and fill it with fresh water. Simmer uncovered until the water lever is reduced by 1/3. Strain the resulting liquid to remove particulates then drink or use as needed. Infusion: Pour freshly boiled water over the desired herb or planar matter, roughly 8 ounces of water per teaspoon of dried plant parts. When using fresh herbs roughly 3 times as much is required.
Oil: Place flowers, herbs or other plant parts in a sealed glass container. Fill the container with an organic oil (ex: Olive, sesame, etc…) until it is an inch above the material being used. Place the bottle somewhere warm for 2 weeks, next to a stove while cooking, on the mantle, a sunny window sill, etc. Upend the container daily to ensure the oil saturates the material.
Ointment: Heat 2 cups of pure lard to frying temperature. Add 4 handfuls of crumbled dry herbs or 6 handfuls of chopped fresh herb to the lard. Stir to to blend and let simmer for 1 minute. Remove from heat, cover and let sit over night. Reheat until liquid then mix in 4 tablespoons of an organic oil, this will prevent it hardening to much. Squeeze through a cheese clothe to remove solids and store in a crockery or glass container.
Salve: Mix 3 ounces of finely pulped plant parts, 7 ounces of lard and 1 ounce of beeswax. When thoroughly mixed simmer over low heat in active red pot for 1-2 hours. Remove from eat and allow to cool.
Tincture: A tincture uses alcohol to extract the properties of a herb or plant. Loosely fill a glass container with fresh or dried herbs and add some sort of food grade spirit (ex: vodka), vinegar can also be used for certain ingredients. Cork or otherwise seal the container and leave somewhere warm for 2 or more weeks.
