THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (1996)
Disney took many queues from the classic 1939 rendition of The Hunchback of Notre Dame when they made their own version in 1996. Not just visually, but several plot elements like the character Frollo being a judge and Esmeralda praying in Notre Dame. The scene where Quasimodo is introducing Esmeralda to his bells and the character of Pierre Gringoire, absent from Disney’s film, is combined with Clopin, leader of the court of miracles. Lots of little homages to find.

“I know you far better than you think you know yourself.”
A flash of emerald eyes charged with defiance, gazed in the direction of the man who was more like a brother to her, than a mentor. Yet, her eyes softened and her agitated stance loosened, crossing her arms under her ample chest. A deep sigh passed through the dancers nose, as she gently shook her head.
“Forgive me, my anger doesn’t reside with you.” Raven black locks fell over her naked shoulders, as she titled her head a little to the side. “You know me… and my rash behaviour. You know I can’t stand for injustice.” Esmeralda scoffed at the last, gazing over at her ‘king’.
“What would you have had me do? Let them beat, mock and torture the hunchback? You know I couldn’t have just stood by and let them do that.”
Esmeralda scoffed, “You know that isn’t true.” She waved a hand in the direction above their heads, indicating above the catacombs. “Frollo has despised us for years- he has no intention of giving us freedom or equality. He may use my actions as an excuse, but you and I both know he would rather see us all hang, then to give us some ounce of respect.”
The dancer had seen some horrible things in her life, mostly during her times wandering the streets before performing. She had seen hunger in the eyes of a child, hopelessness in an old man, and many dead bodies lining the streets during the winter months. One never really got accustomed to it- you just grew to become numb. Yet that didn’t mean Esmeralda would stand by and do nothing if there was something she could do.
Cocking a thick brow, the woman questioned further, “What do you mean, precautions?”
