My heart ♥️
My phone reminded me that it’s Radar’s adoptiversary. We brought him home 16 years ago today. This is the first Radar Day since we lost him last fall. I still miss him.
My sister gave me this ridiculous puzzle, and I simply could not love it more.
Why does this warm my heart so much?
Good breakfast view
For years and years, we have relied on the very excellent soy chorizo made by a local commune called Twin Oaks. But then sometime last year, we stopped being able to find it anywhere in town. And we, well, kinda panicked. Eventually we just became resigned and moved on (though we looked for it every shopping trip).Â
Then last week I saw this vegan chorizo recipe in my Veganuary newsletter, and I thought “what have I got to lose?” I altered the recipe a bit. Here’s what I tried the first round:Â
Dry ingredients:
3/4 cup vital wheat gluten
1/4 cup chickpea flour
3/4 cup TVP
2 tbsp nutritional yeast
2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp hot chipotle chili powder
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tbsp chilli flakes
1/2 tsp ground onionÂ
1/2 tsp ground garlic
1/2 tsp oregano
1/2 tsp thyme
Wet ingredients:
2 tbsp red wine vinegar
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp tomato paste
1/2 cup of vegetable stock
Mix dry ingredients. Add vinegar, soy sauce, tomato paste, and a little stock at a time until it comes together.Â
Knead five minutes. Divide into four pieces, roll in greased aluminum foil, steam for 45 minutes (flipping halfway through). Fridge up to a week (without opening).
It was really tasty! And the texture was good. It slices nicely. We are going to try a bit of salt and maybe some maple syrup next time. Â
Took this tag off the Quince I planted today. I put it in my pocket, not realizing it had a hitchhiker. Poor thing was in my pocket for a while (but is now safely back outside). https://www.instagram.com/p/CGv4RLeFp85/?igshid=1oz90n63onbq1
Every single night I miss seeing this guy curled up in his spot on the bed. Then contorting myself so he’d be comfortable. What a treasure he was to me. RIP dear boy. https://www.instagram.com/p/CFN2ni_lDGC/?igshid=1dr0bm3xpyqlj
Just had to leave my boy at the vet to get IV fluids and meds that will hopefully flush his kidneys. Fingers crossed he will be feeling comfortable and happy enough to come home in a couple days. https://www.instagram.com/p/CE7dB2DFm9J/?igshid=1fv43uuj2xjks
Sunday sunshine!
Baltimore activity is still quite high, even though this will soon change when the first ones start their fall migration. I always thought it was interesting to see their plumage variety, so here is a little gallery. I especially love the “Sunrise Tequila” one.
Teenagers!
The yard is full of teenage birds, so here is a little gallery. In order of appearance: Baltimore Oriole, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Common Grackle, European Starling, Red-winged Blackbird, Blue Jay and Red-bellied Woodpecker.

Shot and developed another roll of b&w film. Here’s one of my faves of Radar from it. He loves his spot of sunshine in the garden. https://www.instagram.com/p/CDq9HnmlchC/?igshid=n1qc9lx4fgj3
I’ve been watching The Story of Top of the Pops and discovering enjoyable bands from ages ago that I hadn’t previously heard of.
