More babies! Here are a Rosebreasted Grosbeak, a MoDo, a RWBB, a Blue Jay and a Grackle. All youngsters, with their unique coloring and patterns, the soft skin around the beak and the cuteness. I think it the color combos are really nice, especially with the insides of the beak. The RWBB is a favorite with the pink contrasting the brown and black. Bluebirds have a yolky yellow inside the beak, btw. Nature is so creative.
Not much going on but here is one of the Monarch cats doing its thing. I am so excited to see them this year, and I love watching them womp around 🙂 I hope it all goes well and I get to see the full process. 🦋
The yard is full of young birds and animals, and it is so much fun to watch them. I like the baby appearance almost a bit more than the adult one but I guess it is mostly because I like the diversity. It feels like an honor that their parents decided that this is a safe spot for them to learn how to live. Bonus-tree clip - the Redbellied youngster was not on the ground. And a teensy opossum ❤️ (MoDo, Cardi, Blue Jay, Oriole, RWBB, Grosbeak, Blue Jay, Grackle, Woodpecker)

The air is a lot better today, but the heat is back. And there are new creatures around that are exciting - some Milkweed popped up in my garden this year (I tried forever!), and I found caterpillars and eggs on it. Also some ear wigs, and because I want to see it at least once, I brought some cats and eggs into the enclosure to watch the whole process. Sky timelapse was fun because the clouds prevented stars, so you can see the glow bugs better. ❤️🦋
It's been a rough week, and these Redwinged Blackbirds perfectly illustrate the mood. (Second one is molting.) I am so thankful for birds.
The extreme heat and the smoke made for little activity in the yard. There are Wren nests in the making, one of them almost done, and I feel terrible for these tiny creatures that have to be outside in this mess, and I hope they all make it and this will be short-term. There were a lot of fireflies last night, and I made another stacked image. Nature is so beautiful, and humans just seem bent to destroy it. Good night, may tomorrow be a better day for the world ❤️
And this is why some of my carefully curated wildflower and nasturtium patch is not doing so well. The Groundhog babies have big appetites. I like seeing what they eat and what not, it helps with planning for future seasons. They do not touch peonies or catnip. I like that they eat Burdock, and I am also happy I buried the fence around my veggie garden, even though these guys even climb trees. They make me laugh, so there's that. (I know the angle is not perfect for their size, this is an experimental setup.)
Also, it is my fault for planting stuff that pretty much shoves itself into their mouth 😌
More stuff is happening at the little "bee hotel". Today, a wasp came and closed the hole in the one tube that a Sweat Bee opened. I am not sure what this wasp is. And now there are two working on one of the tubes I got from Bee Cups. I am also not sure what these are, bug people, speak up! Can anyone identify for me? (I slowed things down a bit for better viewing.)
In Michigan, we only get the Rubythroated Hummingbirds (except for VERY rare exceptions), and people often get confused when they either see a female that does not have the red gorget or when a male moves so that the red appears black. I slowed this clip down so you can see how the colors are changing, it is quite magical.
Things have slowed down a bit and the humidity is a bit bothersome with cameras too (sorry for the foggy livestream lens - I keep changing the camera out but they all seem to let moisture in now) but here is a young Cardi from the other day. I saw the parents feeding it and hoped to get a close-up look, so this was wonderful. For ID, check out the not-yet-red beak and the overall more soft and cute look. Happy weekend!

Summer is a great time to freshen up on your bird ID skills because you can study birds in all age groups. Blue Jays are a species where the babies are easy to be recognized as such, but can you spot the adults from the youngsters? Look at the base of the beak - the soft, often rosy edges are one indicator. And of course their behavior - like other babies, they often just sit and take it all in and enthusiastically beg for food. and of course their overall adorable look. (Last two are adults.)
It is so interesting to watch how the babies are learning the ropes and how differently they handle themselves. Some can be very shy and timid while others are pretty confident and spunky. Baltimore Orioles are of the latter kind. I have seen it over the years and this clip shows it well too 🙂 I love how it fearlessly bathes with the big guys!
The sounds of these two are all over the backyard right now - more baby Orioles and baby Grosbeaks have fledged and explore the surroundings. They are my current favorites, I love their sounds and how absolutely cute they look. They are little clowns too, and seemingly obsessed with the upper end of the pole and the camera 😆
Happy Fourth, everyone. As an immigrant, I am grateful and love the chances I've had, the people I've met, the food and, maybe most of all, the absolutely gorgeous lands and nature and wildlife here. It's so diverse and glorious that it robs you of your breath. And we get to live here! In a way, we are like this Blue Jay, loud, red white and blue and messy, but also beautiful. We are mostly good people, but I also believe we can be a lot better. Let's do this. Happy birthday, USA ❤️
I'll take natural fireworks over the loud stuff any day during peak nesting and drought season.
I had a camera out last night to photograph the sky, and I got some nice firefly action. The cam takes a photo every 30 seconds, and did this all night. I went through them and took out the 13 that had glow bugs in them and then stacked them to make this composite. It is not perfect, I am not operating with pro equipment, and I had to edit contrast etc but I quite like it.
It was a little bit of a shotgun fledge but the Wren babies left the box this morning. I was walking up to add the ice packs when I suddenly saw one baby peek out and then them all flying out. They did look ready to go (parent also luring with food but not feeding) and I am glad they are not baking in there anymore. I always approach the box slowly and alert them of my presence but I guess they were focused and may have gotten startled by me. They were bubbling around the yard all day.
