Alicent, Aemond... now Ormund is just the latest in a long line of Team Green characters to be SA'd as punishment. The fact that he essentially dies through sexual violence is far more sinister than the tired, trite reading of "he's sensitive to bad smells, so he dies to a stinky northerner," or "he warned Daeron to keep his back to the wall in case Gwayne r*ped him, so now he gets r*ped by the said smelly northerner." Anyone who touts that as poetic justice is willfully blind to the much darker and very deliberate mechanism at work here.
Like, no? That's just Ryan Condal's r*pe fetish and hate boner for TG AND the whole writer's room's inability to write anything outside of two distinct, tired tropes.
of course ormund has a humiliating death. you thought they were gonna let the guy who absolutely humiliated team black in just 7 episodes have a cool death? they crucified criston cole for less
I rewatched the finale again, and I'm still disgusted by how Ormund's death was written.
Having him die with a homophobic rape joke reveals something very ugly about the writers. When Ormund was being homophobic to Gwayne, we were clearly meant to see him being in the wrong. But this entire episode, Roddy was being homophobic towards Gwayne, calling the Hightower soldiers boy-touchers, then the aforementioned killing Ormund through sexual assault, ending on a rape joke.
But it feels like it's just presented as amusing. Like we're not meant to see him as being in the wrong too, or at least not in the same way. We're meant to laugh with him? 'Like, isn't the northerner guy so funny calling the Green army gay boys? Isn't it so funny he SA'd a guy with his sword and sexually humiliated him?' /s
I truly hate Ryan Condal. I hope he never finds work again after this show is over.
Imagine if in Akosk Raymund Fossoway is knighted and then doesn't fight in the Trial of the Seven? That's what happened in the HotD season finale. Daeron was knighted and did nothing. He even left Tessaryon chained up for the entire duration of the battle. Nothing too daring here, it must be propaganda, right Ryan Condal?

The writer of 3x05 either did not get the memo, or is even more confused, because if Ormund Hightower is supposed to be a Bad, Non-Progressive type of bad guy (to the point that Condal has compared him to Nazis (?!)...which comes off as unintentional Nazi apologia), why is he, of all people, shown praising Meria Martell and her guerilla tactics resistance to the invaders who came with nukes to conquer her country?
In the novellas and F&B/TWOIAF, Reach noblemen are usually racist AF against the Dornish (the partially brown people who have successfully resisted the Targaryens), while sucking up to the Targaryens (the powerful invaders that have conquered them with nukes and burned their king and a lot of their army). The Hightowers themselves have traditionally tried to maintain relations with the Targaryens and have intermarried with them at least 3 times. So if Ormund is supposed to be the Evil Patriarchy guy, why did they make him so uniquely based in that aspect?
(Although he did use a very inaccurate and anachronistic phrasing: no, Meria Martell certainly would not call Aegon the Conqueror a "usurper and traitor to the Seven Kingdoms", she would call him a foreign invader, and also probably mention his slaver-colonizing Valyrian ancestors that her ancestors fought and ran from. )
Also, Ryan, if you are all about making Ormund evil, are you sure that the way to do it is by having him... orchestrate the murders ofcops (who were previously seen abusing and killing smallfolk on multiple occasions)?
If it weren't for that atrocious last scene of 3x04 (even my friend who has read ASOIAF but has not read F&B immediately hated that scene and said "they are trying to make Hightowers into Harkonens"), Ormund would be a nuanced antagonist/anti-villain and the story would be way more interesting.
Speaking of which, it's funny how, when HotD wants to create a really evil major villain, they basically make him do Daemon-things: murder random innocent people, have angry violent outbursts, talk about his family's blood supremacy, manipulate a teenage relative for power... but with a framing that tells you: "you are supposed to take these crimes seriously, guys! You are supposed to see this as bad! Not like with Daemon, of course you're not meant to see him as evil when he does things like that and more, ha ha, that would be crazy".

The fandom's universal centering of Rhaenyra regarding Criston's motivations and actions like he has no real agenda, personality, or life of his own separate from hers and the invalidation of his grievances with her is so revealing of how real life prejudices translate into media consumption, specifically americentrism and eurocentrism. Many of these people suffer from main character syndrome in real life from being white and/or born in the imperial core. They're used to stripping racialized brown people from the global south of their agency and painting them as hostile caricatures why wouldn't they do it to a brown character who insulted their White Protagonist Princess™?
this extends beyond just criston and racism btw. misogyny is often weaponized towards alicent because fans would much rather prefer behaving vile than acknowledge the institutional power that rhaenyra has over others. guess they don't enjoy having a mirror held up to them or something. maybe im imagining it tho
