writing is kind of like roadwork in that you have to keep coming up with increasingly elaborate reasons for why it’s not done yet. there’s a six week delay because of light winds. the deadline has been extended two months because a family of hedgehogs moved in nearby. a tree fell over the laptop
I wanted to just make something easy and silly to start the year, so here's a collection of my favorite tumblr quotes turned into a little tune.

And song lyrics below the cut as per usual:
WORDS NOT FROM MY LIPS
If you could go anywhere
Would it be a "where" or a "who"?
If you could be anyone
Would who you become still love you?
May your soul be overgrown with moss
May your veins fill with rainwater
May your lungs swell with flowers
Like your soul's making art ever louder
And whether this is blessing or curse
Just lay it on me in my laughter
Decay is (an) extant form of life
You cannot kill me in a way that matters
If you could find the Scarborough Fair
Would it be fine to share some of your time?
Not all profound things come from places high
The gutter also looks at the stars
May your soul be overgrown with moss
May your veins fill with rainwater
May your lungs swell with flowers
Like us all, us making art ever louder
If you could go anywhere
Would it be a "when" or an act?
How many times can the same thing break your heart?
As long as you love it
As long as you love it
Little dragons on a park bench for today's sketch. Was imagining them like seagulls, crows, pigeons, etc-checking to see if people left any little snacks behind to clean up
Once upon a time, there was a young girl with rosy cheeks and hair as black as ebony, tied with a silk ribbon, yet her eyes were filled with worry and sorrow. Lana, a resident of Bunny Hall orphanage, wonders about the disappearance of her dear friend, Carole. Lost in her loneliness, she wanders in a world of her own, where lots of nice and friendly howdy-do birds come to greet her.... until a mysterious letter from her missing friend disturbs her slumber, turning it into a waking nightmare. So, was it really worth following the rabbit down the hole?
❤ As the chapter opens, a whole new world unfolds before our eyes, entirely hand-drawn and immediately reminiscent of the aesthetic of the Disney's golden classics. The film grain that coats the image only enhances this old-fashioned charm and awakens nostalgia for the old VHS tapes that punctuated our viewing experiences. The game feels almost like an interactive movie, with animation as its beating heart; between enchanting cutscenes and beautiful animations for the characters and environment, all in 2D, we're fully immersed in the magic of this animated fairy tale.
❤ Here come the main characters of this story, as endearing as they are fallible. In its wish to pay tribute to the animated stories of our childhood, the game embraces many archetypes from that era: Lana, the lonely orphan searching not for true love but for her dear lost friend; Ms. Hinman, the cold and strict teacher who easily brings to mind a wicked stepmother; Baesie and his role as a funny and lovable mascot… And yet, this little world gave me a deeply familiar and comforting feeling. Also, like any determined princess, Lana will slowly learn, stumbling along the way, opening up to her world and shattering her illusions one by one. Bittersweet and strange, finding she can change, learning she was wrong.
❤ A tale as old as time, set in a fantastical and enigmatic world, yet firmly rooted in the early 20th century, a time when certain mindsets were finally beginning to shift. The storyline itself is very simple, but it's all the subtle parallels between dreams and reality that make it shine. We're faced with some fairly dark themes (harassment, sexism, loneliness, etc.), but the line between nightmare and reality is sometimes so thin that we find ourselves wondering, are we awake or not? There are countless small details that intertwine and blur that fragile border even more, leaving them open to the player's interpretation. Then there are the less subtle but equally striking ones: unlike Alice, Lana does not follow the rabbit but becomes one herself, symbolizing her vulnerability in a world she struggles to accept; Carole constantly quoting Moby Dick's "There is a sweet and mysterious way in which the wind blows...", that same wind that carries her letter away, unconsciously guiding Lana toward her destiny, and helping her grow so she won't remain a lost child in her own Neverland. And that's where the game's strength lies, in this dual reading, both in what it tells us and in the symbols it scatters along the way.
❤ "One song, I have but one song", Lana’s dreams hum with symphonic melodies that have nothing to envy from the compositions of the House of Mouse. With its orchestral themes drawing on the legacy of Romanticism, the soundtrack accompanies our protagonist's adventures with great expressiveness. And to complete the homage, the main theme returns in a pop styled version during the end credits, elegantly bringing the circle to a close. Our adventures are also carried by the voice actors who, in my opinion, manage to reproduce the distinctive tone of the era, between the narrator and his captivating theatricality and the clear, sing-song intonation of the characters.
+/- While the magic of Disney is certainly there, the world quickly plunges into dread. The balance between the fairy-tale, colorful aspect of Corolla and the dark, gothic horror of the nightmare, which sometimes lurks in the real world, is particularly well done. Although the game is not particularly frightening, it still creates a certain amount of anxiety, fueled by its unsettling environments and oppressive sound effects, leaving us as poor unfortunate souls amid the darkness. But above all, the shadow on the moon at night, filling your dreams to the brim with fright, takes shape through these tar-like monsters, with their disturbing transformations and unnerving designs, that will relentlessly pursue you. At times, it even reminded me of Little Nightmares, in the way it stages the fear of the oversized and the misshapen. However, the game relies a little too heavily on cheap jump scares that eventually lose their effect, and the chase sequences are poorly balanced: even if you manage to outrun your pursuer, hiding in the same room won't be enough to escape them. This forces you to constantly run through rooms to find shelter in another. Add to that enemy patterns that offer little freedom of movement, and fear quickly turns to frustration.
+/- Enjoying the animation is great, but when it comes to gaming, taking control is even better! And in terms of gameplay, it's fair to say that it's quite varied… although it could still do with some better optimization. First of all, the puzzle-based riddles are neither too easy nor too difficult, and they cleverly play on Lana and Baesie's transformations, which makes them quite fun. But if at the beginning you whistle while you work, the repetitive mechanics and numerous back-and-forths soon turn it into more of a sigh while you work. The infiltration phases, on the other hand, build up a good level of tension each time an enemy appears, but suffer from clunky pathing and awkward chase management. Then, we find a bit of lightness and renewal with the dance game, but it turns out to be extremely simple and, as a result, becomes almost too long. Finally, venturing into Lana's dreams requires a bit of skill through platforming stages such as climbing, balancing… and very imprecise jumps that caused me to fall a lot. The animation is fluid, but I can't quite say the same for the controls.
✖ If Lana seems to have frozen time, the same could be said for several non cinematic scenes, where the dialogues drag on a bit and the player's actions are completely locked. Normally, it's Lana who's the sleeper here, but this time it's our patience that starts to nod off.
✖ We'd love to place our bookmark peacefully in this fairytale, but the save points are not well adjusted. The mailboxes (save symbols) are sometimes too far apart in the levels, and the auto saves lack clarity because it is not always obvious when the game takes our progress into account.
✖ A few minor bugs occur during the game, both in terms of graphics and character actions. But they will certainly be fixed over time; in fact, as I write this, a patch has already been released, so… you can sleep safe and sound.
And so our story ends, or rather this dream that was charming but not always the most pleasant. Even along its winding paths, we leave with our hearts filled with tender nostalgia. And if Disney once taught us that "a dream is a wish your heart makes", Bye Sweet Carole tells us something a bit more nuanced: you can't reach your dreams by keeping your eyes completely shut to the world. The colors of the wind that once carried Carole’s letters now blow away Lana's fear, guiding her to forge her own path.
And she lived happily ever after…? That's for her to decide.
The End

I think I've got to start featuring new stories in my content emporium, or nobody will know that they're there. So here's the one I added today!
A Four-Dimensional Plot by @larissa-the-scribe
Two ongoing stories set in different worlds in a portal fantasy. In one, a secret agent turned double agent has to hide a small dragon from her crush. In another, a young man born to a family of monster hunters is deathly afraid of monsters, making it difficult for him to carry on the family business.
Dance like no one can hear
The song playing in your head
The sirens, lonely on the pier
Singing 'come home' out from nowhere
Dance like the cast clay ballerina
Spins atop her shiny music box
Her world's small, with colors made of china
Yet she's beautiful, can you say she's not?
Dance like a young damsel in the shower
Imagining a grand stage and circus tents
I plead you, dance like your steps know us
Dance with each of us now, hand in hand
Dance like no one can hear
The song playing in your head
The sirens, lonely on the pier
Singing 'come home' out from nowhere
We dance, though our veins bleed ichor
Pained gold and black that made us us
Painted across our books like a river
Telling stories no one heeds and such
Dance on the bridge but please don't jump
There's so much more to life, there's, I swear
My hand's a plea, while this heart thumps
Take it, don't leave me alone here
Dance like no one can hear
The song always playing in your head
The sirens, lonely loom on the pier
Singing 'come home' out from nowhere
