I feel like yappin and I’m not entirely sure how to articulate my feelings about this correctly so bare with me, but I’ve noticed a shift in how Sinners was initially presented to the public versus how it’s being framed now.

When the film first premiered, there was a lot of hoopla surrounding Annie and Mary’s roles as love interests. Hollywood critics, fatphobic/colorist bitches, and blatantly racist assholes tried to gaslight us into believing Smoke and Annie lacked chemistry… even though their connection felt so authentic their scenes could’ve passed for a nonfiction portrayal of a 1930s couple in love. During the first press run, WB heavily positioned Mary and Stack as the central couple, pairing Mikey and Hailee together in 90% of their appearances and centering their relationship in the trailers. On top of that, some white “fans” attempted to frame this unapologetically BLACK film around Remmick/Irish culture, while simultaneously minimizing conversations about Blackness. Side note, I’m 100% positive that when the black community decided to shut down their attempt at high jacking this moment to make it theirs, that’s when all this ‘Sinners is mid’ nonsense started happening. God forbid we don’t want to hear about your lust for kkk and kkk adjacent vampires.

I’m not going to put words in anyone’s mouth or actions in anyone’s hands, but it doesn’t feel coincidental that after the initial chaos/anti-blackness surrounding the release, award season began focusing solely on the BLACK cast members, and the BLACK (2 black parents, 4 black grandparents, etc.) love story became the centerpiece. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ryan saw the discourse and made a deliberate choice to approach award season by reaffirm that Sinners has always been about Southern BLACK American culture, BLACK love, BLACK music, and how it’s a metaphor about outsiders attempting to invade/exploit what BLACK communities have built because of their selfish desires.

It genuinely brings tears to my eyes that Wunmi has been rightfully celebrated and nominated at multiple award shows for her role as Annie. The fact that Ryan wrote Annie with her specifically in mind says everything and there’s something so powerful about seeing that kind of intentionality from a director like him. *whispers* I just know Ryan watched Lovecraft Country and saw those sex scenes with Ruby and William thinking, ‘I need to get involved in that’ 🤭😭🏃🏾‍♀️🏃🏾‍♀️

We are currently in an era of Hollywood where biracial or racially ambiguous black women are so often positioned as the default love interests in black-centered stories, and it’s refreshing to see a plus-size, dark-skinned BLACKKKKKKKK woman placed at the forefront and not as an afterthought. It’s even more refreshing that Ryan, Mikey, and the rest of the cast never waste a chance to publicly uplift Wunmi because she deserves the praise and more.

Anyways, these thoughts are all over the place and maybe I’m over analyzing everything because it’s BHM and the Oscars are right around the corner… but yeah… Okie byeeeeeee 🏃🏾‍♀️🏃🏾‍♀️
