Willâs feet pounded the pavement; sirens wailing behind them in the distance. That was a fast response time, Will thought. Of course the police in this town would get off of their ass when it was one of their own who had been kicked to the curb. That was one of many reasons why Will was always picking fights with the cops; why he was always provoking them and poking fun of them at every chance he got. They were corrupt and somebody needed to stand up to them and not let them take advantage of everybody in their town any more.
Today was not that day.Â
Will couldnât go and very well take on a whole squad of cops with a human tagging along. Too many things could go wrong, like the human girl being caught in the crossfire and losing her life.
Will rounded a corner, glancing over his shoulder to make sure that the human girl was still following him. He had to remind himself every couple of minutes that as a human, she was not able to run as fast as he could, and he would slow his pace down for her.
âIn here!â Will pointed towards a wired fence, ducking through the gap that was only noticeable if you knew it was there and held it open wide enough for the girl to squeeze through without injuring herself. âKeep your head down and stay close to me.â He ordered as he ducked low to the ground, creeping away from the fence towards the scrap heap of cars that littered the junk yard.Â
âI should probably mention that I donât take all the pretty girls I beat up cops for to a greasy, old junk yard.â He flashed her one of his typical smug but charming smiles and slumped down against one of the cars.
She kept up with Will, step for step without fail. The sirens were getting louder and this all felt too familiar. She focused on her heart beat, on her breathing, keeping the panic down by focusing on everything else but what was happening.Â
She would have completed missed the wire fence if Will hadnât pointed it out. It was the perfect hiding spot, a car junk yard. A lot of places to hide behind and in. The police wouldnât be able to track them here. Hell, even she wasnât sure she would be able to do it in a swapped situation.
Nadia raised an eyebrow at Will before sitting across from him, neatly folding her legs, her back up straight and her eyes flicking around for the exits. âGood to know.â She couldnât help the slight sarcasm that made itâs way into her tone. He was probably telling the truth, she knew his type. Spoil a girl for one night and then move on when they get bored. âLook, I should say thank you. But I could handle it, you know. Iâm not completely defenceless.â In reality, Nadia wasnât defenceless at all. As much as she hesitated, she could have hit and run just like Will...
Almost exactly like Will.
Nadia glanced back at Will, looking him up and down.
âSo whyâd you step in? Glory? Or love a damsel in distress?â
