“That was one hell of a story, I’ll give you that.”
“i should start a storytime youtube. just kidding! but hey, i’ve come up with worst ways to pay the bills.”
“Oh… Oh that sounds terrible. How often does something like that happen? I remember working in the food industry. It is tough but the tips can be really great.”
“like, daily,” lucy replied, rolling her eyes. “people suck. it’s fine, though-- the tips are decent.”
“welcome to the most magical place on earth, where everyone is an asshole as they wait in line.” noah said, sarcastically. “honestly sounds like a shitty job. I don’t think I’d ever want to work there. Or any food service. or retail.” he mentioned. though his side job did involve assholes, but he wasn’t going to mention that at all. “if i was her, i’d have just snuck my own snack in. are you allowed to do that?”
“yeah, never apply for a job at disney. even aside from the shitty customers, they’re super strict.” lucy frowned. “and homophobic.” after pausing for a moment to make a face, she babbled on. “yeah, that’s the thing-- you’re totally allowed to pack your own food. i see people do it all the time. like, no one is forcing you to buy the overpriced chicken nuggets, lady. it’s not my fault that you didn’t think far enough ahead to pack peanut butter and jelly or something.”
“well i give you a crazy amount of credit. sure i work with kids but i mean– it’s nothing compared to disney. i dunno how you do it.”
“the kids are my favorite part of the job,” lucy admitted. “like, kids are simple, mostly. they just want their damn food, and even if they are assholes, you know it’s not their fault-- like, no kid is an asshole unless they have bad parents, y’know? and it’s the parents who are overly stressed and entitled, usually. like, honestly? fuck adults.”
“if it weren’t for the money needs i’d have told her to fuck it too. not the same gig as you but anyone who does that where i work i short change them when they buy things.” she added with a small grin. “its all the more fun when you can retaliate to these rude idiots.”
“i’d be fired if my drawer came up over or under the amount that the computer says should be there,” lucy said, a bit petulant. “i literally just have to stand there and take it. the service industry sucks.”
“all i’ve got to say about that is that people are legitimately insane at disney. that’s why i try my hardest to avoid it there– no lie.”
“see, that’s what a sane person would do: just never step foot in that godforsaken place. but what did i do? i applied for a job there. clearly, you’re smarter than me.”
“--and y’know, i really wanted to tell this lady to go fuck herself at this point. like, why is she getting in my face and yelling about how the chicken nuggets are overpriced? does she think that i’m the one who sets the food prices for all of the disney parks? obviously not.” lucy shook her head with a snort, bringing her cigarette to her lips to take a deep drag. “besides, what the hell do you expect? like, you’re at disney world, sweetheart-- it’s the biggest tourist trap on the planet. but anyway. i was on the clock, and she had two kids with her, so i couldn’t actually tell her to get fucked. i was just like, sorry, m’am, but do you still want to buy the nuggets? and then she got mad at that! like, honestly, what do you want me to say?”
andrew groaned and rubbed his eyes. “jesus fucking christ, it was so hot today when i was meeting all the kids on my shift today. my pants were like three layers of sweatpants in one. gotta love disney.”
forever contrary, lucy flashed him a wide, beaming smile, voice dripping with false enthusiasm as she quipped, “the happiest place on earth!”
“i’m gonna be totally honest wth you right now. my day has consisted of binge watching narcos and a bottle of rosé. this distraction is exactly what i need right now.”
“that doesn’t sound like a half-bad day, honestly. uneventful, maybe, but not bad.” lucy shrugged, sitting down on the couch next to her roommate (despite the fact that she was still in her sweaty work clothes and she knew that tessa hated it when she did that). “is there any rosé left? wait, that’s a stupid question-- you almost definitely finished the bottle.”
Tonight, I said I would drink until my blood turned to alcohol, and I would forget your name. I ended up forgetting mine first.
