July Wrap-up

This month I only read four books. I really wanted to read more since I was out of class for the summer and on vacation for almost two weeks. I was one book short of my goal but I plan to pick up the pace in August. 

My favorite book this month was Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany Jackson. This is the second book of hers that I have read. Although I was frustrated by the ending of Allegedly, I decided to give her another chance. I enjoyed the twist in this one. It was a YA mystery. I also enjoyed Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova. I bought the second book in this series, Bruja Born, before I even knew about the first book so I had to read this one before I can read Bruja Born. It was a good YA fantasy novel. I had to force myself through some of the chapters because it was such a quest. Each chapter felt like its own little adventure and I didn’t feel the connection with the main characters that I wanted. That being said, I am looking forward to the second book. The last two were audiobooks. The Mother of Black Hollywood by Jenifer Lewis was so good! It was a memoir narrated by Ms. Lewis herself. She is hilarious and I found out some things about her that I didn’t know. Lastly was Etiquette and Espionage by Gail Carriger. It says YA SciFi/Steampunk but it felt more middle grade than YA. I don’t know if it was because I listened to the audiobook but it felt a little young for me. It was interesting but I don’t know if I will continue the series or not. 

For August I have already finished To All the Boys I Loved Before by Jenny Han. I wanted to read it before the movie comes to Netflix on August 17th. I won’t review it yet but just know I already ordered books two and three of the series. I also still need to finish Furyborn by Claire Legrand and The Fire Queen by Emily King. I just hadn’t been in the mood for high fantasy lately. I’ve been more into contemporary reads. I also have History of Wolves by Emily Fridlund and Tempests and Slaughter by Tamora Pierce on my TBR for the month of August.

June Wrap-up

This month I completed my goal for the year which was to read 24 books! It was a small goal, I know, but last year the goal was 12 so I decided to double it this year. Anyways, I upped my goal for this year to 48. 

My favorite book of the month was The Hundredth Queen by Emily King. I loved this book! Once I finished I ran back to the library to get the second one. It was a YA fantasy and there are three books in the series currently available. The fourth book will be out in August of this year. This is definitely a series I will purchase for my collection. I finally read Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo. It sat on my shelf for a few months. It was also really good. All of the characters were awesome! Although Wonder Woman is a main character, in my opinion, she isn’t the star of the show. It was also a YA fantasy novel. The Lovely Reckless by Kami Garcia was just ok. It was a little cliche and gave a bit of the Bella/Edward vibe. It was YA contemporary/romance. One Chance to be a Man by D. Revolution was a memoir. It was very gritty and real. Almost too real but definitely a compelling read. Last, I had to read Charisma Code: Communicating in a Language Beyond Word by Robin Sol Lieberman for a class I’m taking this summer but I’m counting it. It was ok, very big ideas and lessons very little practicality. It is nonfiction, spiritual/self-helpish. 

My July TBR consists of the second book in the Hundredth Queen series, The Fire Queen. I need to finish Furyborn by Claire Legrand. I also have Labyrinth Lost and Bruja Born by Zoraida Cordova to read. I have Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson and Stay Sweet by Siobhan Vivian on my summer reads list as well. I would like to keep up the pace and read at least five books this month as well.

I’ve completed my Goodreads challenge already! Next year, I will set a higher goal. Since I read 24 books in about six months, I’m going to try to read at least 24 more by the end of the year.

May Wrap-up

I am proud of myself this month. I read six books! It helps that the semester ended in the beginning of May and I was able to read for fun most of the month. 

By far my favorite book this month was Dread Nation by Justina Ireland. I couldn’t wait to get this book. It wasn’t exactly what I thought it would be but it was very good. Second, I loved The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw. I was intrigued from beginning to end. Both were YA Fantasy/Historical Fiction. Then I got real. Tyler Johnson Was Here by Jay Coles made me cry and The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo made me feel. They were YA contemporary. The Seven Husband of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid was so interesting. I recommend the audiobook. It was Contemporary/Romance/Historical Fiction. Lastly, Born a Crime by Trevor Noah taught me so much about apartheid in a realistic way. I recommend this as an audiobook also. It is a read by Trevor Noah and he speaks four languages. 

I’m hoping to continue my reading streak in June even though my summer class begins this month. I’m almost finished with Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo and One Chance to Be A Man by D-Revolution. I started Furyborn by Claire Legrand. I also want to read Stay Sweet by Siobhan Vivian, Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody and Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi. What did you read in May? What is on your TBR for June?
