closed starter for: @ofpriderocks location: simba and nala’s apartment

up until this point, any time nala spent monitoring the intranet that showcased activity of omita enterprise, it felt like a very thin layer of extra security. one she didn’t need to put much thought into lately with even the darkest corners of the servers operating business as usual. but just as she suspected ( read: feared ) with scar in town was that eventually she’d see elias, california shine bright on the activity map.

today was the day that rang true.

she called to simba as she entered their apartment with a spring in her step, laptop hitting the flat surface of the kitchen table as she opened it up to show him “ babe ! ” she called again as she opened up everything she just found. “ i figured out our next move ! ”

Raph was enjoying his breakfast burrito as he walked. He shouldn’t have been so focused on his phone because his burrito slipped from his hands and fell to the ground. He sighed loudly as he looked at the mess on the floor. “Great. That would happen to me.”

nala watched carefully from behind the front counter as raphael crossed the gym floor with a burrito in his hand, his eyes laser focused on the phone in the other. as a couple members weaved their way around him to avoid collision, gravity betrayed him when the burrito hit the floor. a hand covered her mouth as she failed to hold in a laugh.

“ come on, hamato. what has you so distracted ? ” she asked before grabbing some paper towels and rounding the counter to help clean the mess. “ we’re both due a break. how about we get princey boy behind the desk and we’ll find something else to eat ? ”

“ i’ll even let you say we saved rihanna’s kitten from a tree if you help me, ” nala told the blonde, a small laugh passing her lips at the thought. “ but what’s important here is being seen - and, i hope you don’t take this the wrong way but you look like you’re really good at that. ” she didn’t know much about penny, to be fair, but she would describe the woman as boisterous. “ surely, you know where the hot spots are, right? if you wanted to go out and run into half the city, where would you go? ”

serena’s eyes lit up in amusement. “ and here i thought we finally broke the work-friend barrier and were becoming real friends. oh, when will i stop being so used, ” she sighed dramatically.

“ we are ! look, i promise i’ll make it up to you, ” nala insisted as she looked to her friend with a reassuring smile. as nala started formulating her pursuit to figure out and interfere with scar’s plans, she had made the risky decision to be seen. not in search of the man, of course - but the next time they ran into each other she was going to be ready. she could sit around the casino and wait, considering that was where she saw him last time. but where was the fun in that ?

this wasn’t just about scar, anyway. when she finally struck, there was a possibility it would effect the whole city. the more people who could vouch for her being out, booked and busy as one was, the better the alibi. “ just - where the hell do we go in this city when the goal is to see as many people as possible ? ”

eyes narrowed as nala thought about the alternative for a moment: a world of predictability. of course she understood the sentiment - when life lost its mystery it started to become mundane. but nala had seen enough surprises in her life, too. she shook her head. “ i don’t know. it might be nice to wake up one day and know exactly how it was going to play out. maybe not forever, but ... for once. ”

🎃 ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ─────────── balls and galas were events jasper was used to. he had been raised in high society and was often the forefront of these extravaganzas. while he was raised to live on this pedestal it didn’t mean jasper enjoyed being at these gatherings. he certainly wasn’t a fan of them in this current moment but he had allowed himself to be a shut in for so long. at risk of something going horribly wrong, jasper went against his better judgement and came to the ball. the outfit he wore was already in his closet because of course jasper skellington would own something like this. it made him stand out a little too much when he was used to being in the shadows now. jasper, as per usual, was wildly uncomfortable. the space he tried to keep between himself and other was disrupted when the train of his outfit caught on someone else’s outfit. “ oh, ” the skeleton mumbled as he made eye contact with the other. “ i’m sorry. here allow me .. ” he added as he began to untangle his piece.

the air of familiarity surrounding the full moon ball was both comforting and a little bit unhinged, if nala were to be honest with herself. put her in an expensive enough dress and an extravagant headpiece and she stood a little straighter. easily embodied a role she didn’t quite have to anymore. regardless of which questionable characters entered the city at any given day, her main job here was to remain unnoticed.

and yet here she was, unable to shake the idea that entering the ballroom placed her directly in the line of fire.

her stride was interrupted when she moved too swiftly past a stranger, a clasp on one of her many bracelets managing to hook onto the mesh fabric of his cape. “ oh, hold on, ” she said, slowly turning her wrist to unclasp the bracelet entirely when she noticed a loose thread start to pull away. “ you don’t want it to snag. here. ” with another quick motion, the bracelet was free. she threw it in her purse, considering that was the second time it’s happened tonight. “ your outfit looks incredible. wouldn’t want anything to happen to it. ”

Vanellope peeked around a corner, trying to remain inconspicuous in her brilliant pink ballgown. Gathering her skirts, she dashed across the hallway and through the doorway to the kitchen staging room.

A huge platter of gorgeous pastries had just been dropped off for distribution. With no one in sight, Vanellope scooped up two, stuffing one in her mouth and grabbing a third to take with her.

As she spun around, powdered sugar coating her lips, she tripped over her skirt. With a squeak, she tipped, landing on her knees, the pastries rolling away to land at the feet of a stranger.

Swallowing quickly, face turning pink, Vanellope sat back on her heels.

"Whoops! Not used to all this extra fabric," she chuckled.

the discussion about whether or not simba and nala would even show up to this event was a surprisingly short one, so much so that she had managed to shock herself with the lack of caution. there was a chance - a rather large chance, honestly - that scar shauku would show up just like everyone else in the city. stepping foot inside that ballroom decreased the size of their arena to the most populated room in elias that night, and the fear of that caught up with nala the moment she had a second too long to think about it.

it didn't take long for her to decide that she'd feel much more at peace if she scanned the place, using the search for a bathroom as an excuse to get away long enough to make her rounds. the building was full of life, which made her feel a little better. the more people there were in a room, the easier it was to blend in.

a sharp turn into the kitchens had her searching for a single glass of champagne - she couldn't let her guard down too far, but she could let loose just a little if she wanted to. she was on a mission as narrowed eyes scanned the room, but was interrupted by someone tripping in front of her.

" are you okay ? " nala asked as she quickly offered a hand to help them up, casually tapping the pastry with her foot so it would roll in the opposite direction. " you didn't twist your ankle or anything, right? do i need to call a medic ? " she joked.

❛ yeah, it’s like this now ... but it wasn’t always this nice. ❜ nala recalled just last year when half the city was picking up rubble and climbing over debris. after the city had found itself overrun by monsters, a little bit of new york trash would have felt like nothing. undetectable or maybe even unsettling like the cleanliness seemed to feel to her now. ❛ i’m actually kind of surprised how quickly they fixed it up down here. that building, ❜ she pointed, ❛ had collapsed on itself at one point. they just fixed it up recently. ❜ she chose to withhold the how and why pieces of that story unless probed.

the framework for tonight had been entirely formulaic, plotted down to every minor detail. a celebratory night in, complete with baz luhrmann’s romeo + juliet and both girl’s favorite snacks, would keep both nala and kiara safe behind locked doors in a way that filled their emotional cup. with simba and kion in the next room, all of them settled and safe under the same roof ... scar could knock on the door and nala’s confidence would soar. bring it on.

was it a bad thing ? well, no - nala wouldn’t say that. however, it was a ... different thing. a peculiar thing. a piece of information she wasn’t sure she’d give up willingly, even this many drinks in. she waved to the bartender in a way that was similar to how she would get fran’s attention, the night’s habits coming to her in that moment as she raised two fingers to indicate another round of what they were drinking, chosen earlier by her friend.

i’ll tell everyone here. nala smirked as she started pointing cheekily at random patrons of the bar - the more scandalized she thought they’d be, the better. what about this old guy ? there was emphasis on the sign for old. how do you think he’d react ?

🦁 ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ─────────── “ he would though, nala. you and i know that. ” his hands placed themselves on either side of his girlfriend’s body, holding onto her arms as if they were life support rafts because to simba they were. if he ever dared to let go an inch he feared he would float away. which sounded a hell of a lot better than what he had just been told. his uncle was alive and he was here in elias. it’s not that simba didn’t think this was a possibility. he knew scar was alive. the thought of his uncle felt miles away. not a present threat. it was supposed to be a challenge he would face when he was ready - if he was ever ready. simba had all but given up the idea of going back to pride rock. it wasn’t his fight anymore. the title of king had gone to his uncle. it might have seemed unfair but scar had won the fight. simba wasn’t strong enough to beat his uncle then and he wasn’t so sure he could beat him now. his grip tightened on nala’s arms as he tried to ground himself. realizing what he was doing he released her and backed away with an apologetic look coloring his features.

“ he wanted power. what’s more powerful than teaming up with a woman who’s calling upon the dark forces to snuff out the light ? ” the wooziness settled in again and simba hand to sit down. the wind hadn’t been knocked out of him. oh no, his breath had been stolen right from his lungs. it was becoming harder to focus on what nala was saying. the only thing that simba could hear was the ringing in his ears and the sound of his heart slamming against his rib cage. he did his best to calm himself so he could focus to the situation at hand. he was no use to nala if he couldn’t pull himself together.

“ we got comfortable. ” a curt laugh left him because it was laughable. they had allowed themselves to become complastant. this normality they had settled into had given them a false sense of security. the war was no longer in their backyard. a semblance of peace they had never known was given to them only to be snatched. “ it was stupid to think we could ever leave … that we could just forget what was going on and live normal lives. ” he was speaking more so for himself rather than nala because if there was one thing nala omita was it was a warrior. she would bleed for their people. simba couldn’t let her bleed out alone.

this life he had forged for himself with nala was now shattered. any hopes of leaving behind the past was futile. the past had caught up with him and hit him like a semi truck. there was nowhere left for simba to run. he had to face this head on. not just for himself, or for his kingdom but for his family. for nala, kiara and kion who had all fled to elias for sanctuary.

the question nala posed was one simba refused to think about. it was a scenario that he didn’t dare linger on too long. with all his intensive training he was left standing in the middle of a battlefield with no armor, not course of action and no hope. the only thing shrouding him was fear.

but simba was mufasa’s son. he was a shauku. he was a lion at heart. if there was one thing synonymous with the shauku’s was their bravery. it was time for him to remember who he was and tap into that side of himself he had buried.

“ if he’s looking for me then he’s looking for a fight. scar’s gone too far this time. i’m not letting him get away with this like he did with the pridelands. ”

nala watched as simba’s gaze shifted with each passing realization that accompanied her words. she only had a small idea on what most of them could be, but she knew they were plentiful. both of them were going to have to quickly accept that no matter how much time went by, no matter how prepared she thought they were going to be, neither of them were ready to just run into simba’s uncle. the king. scar. any one title didn’t fit, but throwing them all together felt like they were giving the man too much credit. her hands gripped simba’s shoulders to steady him.

it had been so easy to settle down and get wrapped up in what nala could only describe as a perfectly normal life with simba, allowing themselves to navigate adulthood together without the turmoil of a fallen government looming directly over their heads. things were out of sight and out of mind for just a smidge too long and now they were looking at aftermath comparable to a whirlwind.

and she was already jumping ahead of herself, something she only caught at his response to her. what logic did she have to think that scar was here specifically for simba when they had learned last year that he was working with that dastardly woman who was infiltrating this very city ? ❛ no, i’m wrong, ❜ nala acknowledged with a shake of her head. while she was proud of simba in that moment for putting his foot down ... she couldn’t let him instill the type of fear in himself that went along with it. ❛ how long ago did we figure out scar and maleficent were working together ? he was probably bound to show up eventually .... we should have thought about that. ❜

she had thought about it. she had just hoped it wouldn’t come true.

❛ i can hack the databases, you know, ❜ she said softly. ❛ well, i can try. if it mirrors our system like i think it should, it won’t be too hard ... they have no reason to suspect anyone is watching. ❜ of course, she wasn’t exactly sure what she would do once she got in - maybe just quietly monitor like she did with pride rock - but they wouldn’t know if there was anything to look for until they went looking for it.
