This is Nala, my adorable 2 month old Syrian Hamster🐹 Brought her home a little over a week ago and within the first week home she began showing signs of illness. I gave her majority of the week to herself to settle in and avoid stress, but soon noticed she wasn’t coming out of her burrow anymore to eat or drink. So I made the decision to dig her out (since she refused to come out on her own and I couldn’t see her down there) and found that her eyes wouldn’t open, ears flat, wet bottom, etc. Immediately took her to the vet the next morning (would’ve that night but they were closed of course). The vet diagnosed her with wet tail and gave her fluid injections along with antibiotics, probiotics, and liquid food. Now she gets all three of those every few hours as prescribed. This was 3 days ago now. She’s been very good with medicine taking, drinking + eating on her own again (and often!) and can keep both eyes open. Happy to say she’s going strong fighting wet tail! ♥️ Very proud of her progress. Thought I’d share her story on here! She’s not fully recovered of course, but I’m very hopeful.
Some lil facts: I’m a first time hamster owner. 🐹 Nala has a DIY IKEA Detolf cage w/8 inches of bedding (which she loves burrowing in). She has a 12 inch wheel, 50/50 mix of block pellets and seed mix as food, millet sprays around her enclosure to encourage foraging, and Kaytee clean and cozy bedding with layers of hay. Soon to have a big spot for sand bathing/digging! She’s very well cared for and loved ♥️ She is temporarily in a “hospital tank” to recover. This is so she is close to water, food and I can easily spot clean often w/her diarrhea going on right now and keep a very close eye on her! While her main enclosure is getting fully cleaned 🧼 and prepared for when she is healthy/ready to return.
