Have I ever told you that I love you, Nami?
Yes, but you don’t say it enough. Want to tell me why you need a place to stay?
Is it cool if I sleep over tonight?
Sure. You should fit in my sister’s bed.
“My eyebrows?” Jonny exclaimed, definitely louder than he intended. Of course, he wasn’t that oblivious to what he looked like, but he definitely didn’t pay attention to it often nor realise such positive potential in them. Thus far, this person had just been a bundle of surprises, throwing off Jonny and all his instincts told him. Lowering his voice, he added in some panic whispering haze. “You really think that? They would kill fo—never mind. I’ll take it.” He wanted to ask who they were, as quite frankly, Jonny was drawing blanks in the recognition department. For him, knowing the most devout in the Korean church community was enough and at school he’d never done much past those in regular and close contact. Even if he’d stood at the Morning Gale cashier for his endless shifts regularly, there was no bother to remember faces or pursue them.
Realising they had a great amount of bags, he couldn’t help but comment aloud. “That’s quite some load, are you gonna get home alright with all of them?”
“Your eyebrows,” Nami found themself repeating, a stern nod of the head causing the long locks of the wig to fly forward. It was amusing to see the other’s reaction, especially because they had assumed that he knew already. Just one look at the stranger and they could tell that his eyebrows were his nicest feature, a close second being his cheekbones. The boy must have received compliments on those twin bushes before. “People take eyebrows very seriously these days,” they noted, pursing their lips to keep from smirking. Something told them that a smirk might make him think they were making fun of him, and they didn’t want to risk that. For once, they were being sincere, no back-handedness to the compliment.
The other’s comment was unexpected, leaving Nami is a short state of confusion before realizing that he was talking about their shopping bags. “Oh? I think I can handle them. Unless you’re offering to carry them for me,” they pointed an expecting glance at the other, wondering if he would pick up on the hint. In all honesty, they could very well continue carrying the bags on their own; they weren’t that heavy. But, seeing as they had gotten all dolled up that morning, it could be nice to milk their femininity and have someone else carry them. Normally, all it took was a pout and a cute ‘oppa, please’, but they had no idea if this guy even knew about honorfics -- he definitely sounded as American as one could get --, so they stuck with the most obvious route.

Gina made me call people and tell them she was dead to see how they’d react.
“Bossy? At least I take charge.” But Aleida would drop it there… For now. There was no need to start bickering so early, at least not with that topic.
A roll of her eyes quickly followed Nami’s next comment. She knew they were right; in fact, whenever she needed to go shopping, she was usually looking for them to come along. “I hear Minhee’s got a better eye for those things– and no, I’m not trying to pit two of the only Korean students in Westwood against each other. She’s just got opinions.” The sentence came out in a sing songy tone in hopes of provoking some kind of pout from them.
Her day was filled with good, much unlike his, it sounded. “Mom made pancakes, mother made popsicles– and avó baked those cookies you really like, they’re in the kitchen. Good day. Now,” They reached her large bedroom and she sighed at the mess, “Look at this– ah, uh… Travesty. No, tragedy. That’s the word."
There were clothes everywhere; the ones hanging out of their boxes being the new streetwear, the gowns with the tags for events. Otherwise, there was no way to tell the difference between what she had previously worn or what had been just washed; cleaning was never in Aleida’s interests. "The newest additions to my wardrobe are yours to pick at and tell me to wear.. The event I need a gown for is some weird gala. I just want the five-panel hats and the Hentai shirt from the streetwear because it’s funny– the rest is up for grabs there.”
“Minhee-noona? Aish, you’re severely mistaken. She’s got talent, I’ve got looks. That’s how it goes in our family,” they replied, certain to make sure that their eye roll was visible. They found the comment about them being two of the only Korean students to be funny. Ironically enough, as most racists might have assumed, Nami and Minhee were actually related. Ending up in the same area was no real coincidence, but instead an intentional act by one of their parents. Still, the two of them were able to agree that they were talented in their own right, and they knew that Minhee knew that they were the more fashionable of the two... even if she wouldn’t admit it out loud. “Don’t try to pick a fight between me and my own cousin. I need someone around here that can eat kkongchi-jorim without getting the shits.”
“I can always count on you for food,” they joked, chuckling slightly at their own words. It did seem like the two of them spent a lot of time discussing fashion and eating, but that was okay with Nami. As long as they ate, they were pleased. “Ah, don’t those mean the same thing? I hate English.”
Nami avoided the mess of the room and made their way to the closet, wasting less than a second before they began to sort through the fabrics. A few different articles caught their eye, reaching over to pick them up and toss them into a new pile. “You’ll look fabulous when I’m done here,” they muttered as they picked through an assortment of dresses. At the mention of a Hentai shirt, they stifled a snort, “I never pinned you as such a weeaboo, you pervert.”

Of course it was Nami. She should have guessed it was them, what with the not-completely natural looking wig, but she had to hand it to them– the wig was a great one. The way the other neighbours who were out in front of their homes looked at the two was how a tourist looked at natives converse in their home languages; the two very different accents being heard on an American street was always strange. “Ai, miúdo, get in here already. You know the way.” Even if Nami had stubbornly refused, the day would have ended with them devouring whatever feast her mom was preparing.
“I have burguês events to attend– consequently, you’re helping me pick dresses. And jewelry to sponsor. And some streetwear brands have been hitting me up lately with clothing– men’s and women’s.” It was the fault of the contrived Sundance film she had done months before that was beginning to release promotional images; the whole style of the wardrobe was Japanese-inspired streetwear. “So you can have whatever I don’t want, yeah? How was your day, babe?”
Nami’s eyes traveled to the gazes of the neighbors surrounding the other’s home. It was almost as if they had never seen two foreign people converse before. “Omo, you’re so bossy,” they whined, following their friend in the direction of her home. It wasn’t like they were in any rush to get home themself, and any escape from the heat sounded like heaven in that moment.
The promise of free clothing was more than enough to convince Nami that they had made the right choice. “Ah, you came to the right person. My eye for fashion is the best around,” they flashed her a grin, throwing in a tiny wink for good measure. There was nothing that they would enjoy doing more than organizing someone else’s closet and picking out outfits. “It was okay. I’m ready for summer to officially begin. How was yours?”
“‘Ey, miúdo–” The Brazilian accent was alive as she directed her words at the person on the sidewalk. She recognised the kid on her street from school, which would be normal considering she lived in an area near a lot of richer students– but this one definitely wasn’t one of her irritating neighbours… And if they were a friend visiting, she couldn’t tell completely; the sun was blinding at the moment.
And, they look well dressed enough, so a small part of her was hoping they weren’t another tasteless being in the universe. “Mind if I use your mind and opinions for a moment?” She needed a good guinea pig.
Nami was starting to regret their choice of wig today. As wonderful as it looked on them, the long, black locks were starting to attract a bit too much sun. They felt as if their head may set fire at any minute, and they wondered just why they had chosen to walk home from school instead of taking a car. The Californian weather was bright and sunny, just as it always was, but wandering down the street, it felt as though it were a few hundred degrees outside.
A familiar, thick Brizilian accent was pointed in their direction, and they spun on their heel to face Aleida. It was clear by her tone of voice that she probably hadn’t recognized Nami just yet, but as someone who wore a different hairstyle every day, they couldn’t say that was anything new. Combating her accent with their own Korean one, they offered her a grin, “Please, pick my mind apart.”
❖ — “Yeah, you’re right.” Minhee couldn’t help but snicker at Namsun’s comment and the truth to it. Knowing how she was, it probably was an attempt that would happen somewhere down the line– her mouth had a habit of running before her brain could tell her to hold back. “Maybe the setting has adapted as we get more advanced– heaven might have iPhones that don’t restart ten times a day. Or maybe it’s all just purgatory. Still, better to just go grand than take the risk.”
“Your dedication is impressive,” he laughed as well, unable to keep a straight face as she snickered. That was one thing that he could always depend on when it came to his cousin. If she was laughing, he usually was too. “Ghost iPhones? Sounds like the next big horror blockbuster. You could probably star in it,” he nudged her shoulder playfully, a grin on his features.
Therese giggled, trying to catch the crumbling rise ball in order to not make such an enormous mess. “Sorry, sorry!” She said with a more robust laugh. “So, is this your favorite food? Or dish to make?”
They laughed along with the girl, wondering if she would ever be able to eat the treat as it was intended: with a pair of chopsticks. “It’s okay,” they assured her, popping another one in their mouth and chewing thoughtfully. “Definitely not my favorite. It’s too bland to be a favorite. But they’re easy to make, and they’re often just a quick snack in Korea.”
❖ — “Of course I do, I’ve been in this all my life.” She stated obviously, the flipping of her hair being an almost unconscious act. “But will they actually do it? Highly unlikely. Who knows, I might get kicked off this project too if I try it.” The possibility wasn’t going to stop her from trying, though– it never did, even if it usually worked out against her favor. There were a million other roles she could try her hand at, and she wasn’t going to cry over one botched one.“I don’t want to spend the rest of eternity in a stuffy dress, anyway.”
“That won’t stop you from trying,” he replied, having a few flashbacks to previous conversations with his cousin. No matter what, she always tried to beef up her part. He had to admire her determination, if anything. “Could you imagine? If there’s an afterlife, there better be a spirit shopping center. I’m not wearing the same thing every day for the rest of forever.”
I suppose so. Are you going to make a career of it?
I wish I could. I have other opportunities, though.
