Spina bifida
I was born with an open back. In medical terminology, this birth disorder is called "spina bifida".
My disability is a malformation of the spinal cord. Simply said, this means that even before birth, even in the womb, some of the spinal nerves, at a certain height that varies and is different in each affected person, don't all have nerves in the spinal cord grown together and some of the spinal cord remains open, so not covered by skin, as it's usually the case. The open part of the spinal cord must be closed immediately after birth, in a surgery, as the spinal nerves otherwise be completely unprotected outside the body in a bag and it would come to bacterial infections Inflammations that can lead to death. During the inevitable surgery, there is an additional risk, that the additional manual intervention of the doctors will damage other spinal nerves and increase the disability. But a surgery is inevitable in such a birth and even life-sustaining. Here a picture of myself as a baby after birth, but just before the surgery to close my "open back".
does your disability have a specific term? in what way are you disabled? how does it affect your daily life? what can able people do to make things more accessible for you and others with disabilities like yours? (additionally, are any of those questions offensive?)
Hello! Thank you very much for your questions about my disability! First of all: None of your questions will offensed me or get me offens. I am very open-minded and I like it, when people are interested in my disability and ask me questions about my disability and my life with this disability. Unfortunately that happens very rarely that someone is interested in my disability. So you can still ask more questions about my disability and my life with my disability without shame. You are allowed to be curious. š I will gladly answer ALL your questions tonight if I have more time. I have spina bifida and my lower body is paralyzed - also my bladder and my bowel are paralyzed and I sit in a wheelchair. š
itās officially been 1 year since i got my hardware! most, if not all, of the numbness has gone away. thereās still some pain, but my body feels so much better. my scar has faded drastically and iāve been complimented more on my posture than everything else combined.

DO NOT CATH A PERSON WITHOUT WARNING THEM. Seriously, please. You need to warn a patient and get their permission before shoving a painful tube inside them. I canāt believe I have to say this but psa for medical professionals. The last few times Iāve been cathed, itās been without warning and even knowledge they were going to do it which makes it more painful and makes you unintentionally clench up. So please warn a person before cathing them. Itās common fucking courtesy.
Who the fuck is doing this? Who?!? This is horrible and UNPROFESSIONAL. Stop it. You always, always ask a patient before you touch them, explain the procedure, and warn for any discomfort. This is nursing 101 people. Hell, this is being a decent human 101.
Exactly. Itās happened the last two times Iāve been cathed outside the hospital at two totally different doctors offices/practices. Youād think itās decent fucking human 101 but apparently not. Idk if they think sneaking it in will make it easier on the patient but because I have pelvic floor dysfunction (which is why Iām at that doctor in the first place) if I donāt get warning, itās super extra painful. Itās fucking ridiculous. I just donāt understand how you can touch a patient or perform a procedure without their knowledge. It happens constantly to us and it just makes no sense.

I think the most annoying part of people saying āItās so cool you donāt let your disability stop youā to me is that itās just, itās so ignorant to my life. Like I just want to scream āOf course it does! Of course! My disability stops me at every turn because the world isnāt accessible to me. I canāt go to my friends houses or half the restaurants or certain entire neighborhoods! I have to turn down jobs in inaccessible buildings and I havenāt seen a therapist in years, because on top of regular difficulties, most of those who were available didnāt have offices I can get inside. It stopped my friendships in their tracks because people canāt understand fatigue. Iāve had to turn down fashion campaigns Iāve been offered multiple times because I canāt reliably travel alone on an airplane, lest my wheelchair gets lost, or the staff injures me, or when we land cabs refuse to take me. Not to mention I canāt stay in just whatever hotel or airbnb I find thatās affordable to me. Beyond that, just imagine the opportunities Iād get if people were less afraid to work with disabled people. If you think Iām doing things now just IMAGINE what Iād be doing if the world wasnāt designed in a way I have to actively fight against every second of every minute of every day. This is me being stopped and the fact that Iām doing things nonetheless isnāt proof that Iām not letting things stop me, itās proof that Iām talented and driven. If the world wasnāt so inaccessible I would be a force to be reckoned with. The fact you think Iām not being stopped means you not only underestimate me, but you donāt pay attention. I get it. Itās easy to not notice the obstacles when theyāre not in your way. Itās certainly easier to pretend that other disabled people are āletting things stop themā, than admit that the world is rigged against us. Thatās not an easy realization. Of course, Itās easier to ācomplimentā me than to address inaccessibility and ableism, but itās ignorant, and it downplays everything I, and other disabled people have to fight through to survive (let alone succeed.) Iām ālettingā things stop me at every turn and Iām still killing it through this obstacle course. And that is, in my (not so) humble opinion, so much cooler.ā
I totally agree!
Anyone can help!
(Real pen the last picture)
It is important for EVERYONE to know how to help ANYONE. Not everyone can give them selves their medicine under every circumstance. Be educated, help out.
In the last year, i have gotten about five new violent allergies from foods i used to be able to eat. Next time i eat a fruit, my throat could close. I may not be able to inject myself. My boyfriend and i played with my trainer pen for like 30 minutes. He knows how to inject it. I know how. This is important.
Very good instruction! šššš
This is the first and only time, i am going to show my body on here.
I have also struggled with how my body looks. But i am starting to love it, even though i have days where i canāt bare to even look at myself. But that happens a lot less now. So, thatās a bonus.
