Since "Game of Thrones" ended, fans have found themselves in search of another massive fantasy drama capable of filling the void it left. But as it turns out, the best substitute for the show was airing at the same time. Balancing the same character-driven plotting with all of the political maneuvering of the early seasons of “Thrones,” “Black Sails” is a gritty, blood-soaked prequel to “Treasure Island” that almost nobody watched while it was airing. And that’s a shame, because it’s an intelligent, exciting highlight of fantasy Peak TV. If you’re looking for a high-seas adventure story that doesn’t overstay its welcome, this is the right choice. All four seasons are currently available for streaming.

Black Sails is one of the greatest pirate based television shows of all time. It is very much a Game of Thrones on the water with heavy violence, sex, and colorful language, and that's what made it so compelling. It provided a more honest and less glorified version of piracy.

Things don't always go right, and there is a lot less leaning on comedy here. The show is packed full of amazing characters, but the standout has to be Captain Flint, who is one of the shows lead roles. He is a pirate who has his own code and isn't afraid to cross people in order to get what he wants, but he is also an honorable man at the same time, making him relatable to an audience

Toby Stephens is an actor who hasn’t quite found his slot. Is he a red-hot romantic, a dashing rotter or an amiable buffoon? He can play all three with ease. In Peter Nichols’s A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, he stars as Bri, a sardonic schoolmaster whose air of forced jolliness seems heartless and glib at first. But then his back story emerges. Bri and his wife Sheila have spent 15 years caring for a severely disabled daughter. The weight of this responsibility has driven their marriage to the brink of collapse, and now they face worse anxieties as they consider packing the helpless girl off to a care home.

This harrowing play portrays the world of pain experienced by Nichols himself who raised a brain-damaged child. Stephens handles Bri’s varied registers with perfect fluency. He can be funny, moving, tender, and impishly amorous as well. Some of the script’s attitudes and language have dated badly. The couple’s best friends, Freddie and Pam, have never met the disabled girl whom they refer to as ‘a vegetable’. The clinicians use that term for her as well. When Stephens impersonates a German doctor he struts up and down like a neo-Nazi shouting ‘Gott im Himmel!’ and clicking his heels. That looks rather problematic nowadays.

There's nothing better than spending your weekend binge-watching new shows until 4 AM and realizing that you haven't done anything all day except watch TV.

Black Sails may just be the most underrated show on here. This Starz series lasted just four seasons from 2014-2017 and ended in spectacular fashion despite that. Some people may have reservations going in, thinking this would be some cheap pirate-themed Game of Thrones knock-off. Others probably think Black Sails would be more along the lines of Pirates of the Caribbean. Black Sails is neither of those.

SCREEN TIME Before bed I might spend time on social media, where I keep up with friends going back to middle school, usually while watching TV. I also might be inclined to enjoy my new smart TV. I’ve been binge-watching old shows like “Battlestar Galactica” and more recent miniseries like “Game of Thrones” and “Black Sails.” I try to get to bed by midnight, but if I’m caught up in a show, it can be much later.
