Cheryl is the daughter of Dr. Nancy (Psychwave) and Zephyr (Macroburst) Grayson. After the criminalization of Supers, Psychwave and Macroburst were forced to leave their base in New Atlantis. They packed up their boxes (or atleast whatever the government let them keep) and made their way to Nevada, her and Everseer working as psychologists. After some time they married and had Cheryl. Psychwave had needed to leave their job out of frustration and became a stay at home mother. They lived as modestly as they could.
Growing up in a time of super hiding was not always easy for Cheryl. The life her parents lived had always sounded so fabulous. It was how they found each other after all. Even if the Phantasmics had to break up, they were still pretty frequently in each other's life. Often visiting and sharing stories of the good old days. It made her want to be a hero so bad. All she wanted to be when she grew up was to be like them. But she couldnât.
When Cheryl was about 14 her family seemed to disappear. Before she left, Psychwave claimed there were various conventions to discuss changes in the world of mental health and she was to be a keynote speaker. Cheryl didnât know it was going to lead to her parentsâs doom and Psychwave and Macroburst would never return. She became orphaned.
Some years later she would meet the Deavor siblings. With Winston and Evelynâs parents having ties with Gazerbeam Cheryl was excited to finally have her chance. She ended up getting adopted by Winston around the same time. Maybe make their legacy mean something. She signed on quickly, becoming the hero Sonic Valkyrie. Using her iconic seismic scream (known as Call of the Valkyrie) to bring down foes. Bright eyed, determined, ready constantly to do the right thing. At this point she would best be described as a lawful good.
She played the role of the excited newbie well. When asked, talking about her parents and what they meant to her, saying what they needed to hear. Winston marketed her like the everyday, all American teenage girl. She goes to school, straight A student, loves The Beatles (Ringo is her favorite) and David Bowie. Super heroes are everyday people like everyone else. Her entire existence was plotted by PR. What color palette to wear, what type of friends she could have. All of it.
Oftentimes she would get paired off with Blackout (an OC by @hipsterfishboi ) . Mostly due to their closeness in age. Winston thought it smart to make sure they kept in the social scene. Sonic Valkyrie and Blackout were fighting crime and Sonny and Cheryl were being pushed to become good friends. Photographed both in and out of super identities by the public. Winston Deavor saw an opportunity, having the two eventually start to date. They kept this relationship for many years, even after the supers were reinstated and the Super Relocation Act was disbanded.
Constantly in the public eye though, Cheryl started burning out. She wanted to live a life outside of Sonic Valkyrie, and wanted Cheryl to feel some type of freedom to be herself. People were getting weird about her. She continued heroing all through college. At one point her suit got a redesign, something meant to be âsleaker, sexier, show she wasnât a child anymoreâ. Something that clearly wasnât designed by Edna Mode. The redesign did not last long.
In her late 20s early 30s Cheryl was beginning to question how much longer she wanted to be in the public eye. Decisions being made for her constantly. It caused a distrust in how much of her autonomy was her own. She started getting curious about supers who kind of fell off. A hero family from Chicago whose middle child ran off to persue villainy serving as inspiration. Another orphaned hero who gave so much and just wanted something for her. She started questioning things. Slowly turning more neutral. Wondering if she could go solo.
She and Sonny eventually got married for the public eye. Both having conversations in the late night hours about what theyâd actually want for their lives. They were just so tired. Itâs what inspired them both to go on hiatus. During that time having a son named Glenn and eventually getting divorced. She still practices hero work from time to time however has put more of a focus on her nonprofit work as well as becoming the new CEO of DevTech (which she plans to share with her cousin Terra.)
