ooc talk!
I’ve been especially poofy the past two weeks because I’m job hunting and live at home currently, and my parents get pretty upset if I’m online for too long. But I’ve been made aware that my best friend has left the fandom because of a mistake? And I really feel the need to speak about this, because it’s something that I’ve seen in other fandoms as well. And it’s a really unhealthy part of Tumblr that for some reason continues to be a thing.
White-washing is bad and there is no excuse for it. Let me make that perfectly clear. However the members of this website are human and make mistakes. And that’s okay. What isn’t okay, is jumping down their throats and telling them to hang themselves over anon. We all come from different walks of life, some of us are aware of things that others are not. If someone makes a mistake you say, “Hey I know you’re cool but this is an uncool thing and let me tell you why.” You don’t ever tell someone to kill themselves. You don’t mob up on them. And you don’t make vague posts. Not everyone who registers an account on here is a legal adult, but we are all old enough to have understanding and basic human decency.
Hannah is a really good person. The face claim in question was not permanent, and I know because she bounces ideas of Asian face claims off of me. I know because I’ve talked to her everyday for two years. And I’ve seen this happen to other good people, who honestly just aren’t aware but realize the situation once it’s actually explained. And I get why people become upset over this. White-washing is a huge issue. But the way these instances are handled on Tumblr is also a huge issue. And it needs to change. This is not a healthy attitude to have.
