Maybe Dean and Cas were together but never defined it that way. Because, with their lives, it was too hard to be anything but secret lovers, who snuck off together late at night in the Bunker. Maybe they’d close the door to Dean’s room and use each other’s kisses to silence what they really wanted to say. Maybe every little stare, every little touch, was just a hint of how well they knew each other, and how well they knew every inch of each other.

Maybe Dean would come back from some hunt, use a couple of minor scrapes and bruises as an excuse to let Cas heal him, let Cas’ touch lead to more. Maybe they’d lie together for hours after, both secretly wishing this could be more.

Maybe the confession was just Cas finally saying the words that had been unspoken between them for years, because what they wanted was something they thought they could never have, even though they both had it all along.

every night, cas would kiss dean somewhere on his body that he swears he hasn’t kissed yet. dean’s knuckles, the back of his shoulder, his ribs, or his stomach. sometimes it’s a silly kiss to dean’s knee or the tip of dean’s nose, and sometimes it’s a tender kiss to the soft spot behind dean’s ear or right over dean’s heart. when dean asks why cas is on a mission to kiss every part of his body, cas smiles softly and replies, “because i love every inch of you, and you deserve to be loved for everything that makes you who you are” and somehow that is the most adorable and sappy thing dean has ever heard in his entire life and he pulls cas close until he can kiss his angel on the lips as he murmurs “i love you too, cas, every part of you”
