To remove the cover of the note pad you need to:

1) Bind together the pages of the note pad and the back cover with a binder clip. Leave the front cover loose.

2) At the top and bottom of the spiral the wire is bent. Straighten it with a pair of pliers.

3) Wind the spiral out of the note pad.

4) Use the cover as a template to cut scrapbook paper into the same size. I suggest thicker cardstock papers so they will hold up well to use.

5) Bind old cover and new scrapbook paper covers together. Use the old cover as a guide and punch holes for the new note pad covers. Place the new cover on each note pad and re-thread the spiral back through, bending the ends again with the pliers. Easy peasy, right??

Seed Saving

1. Collect seeds from mature fruits or flowers. For plants like tomatoes, peppers, melons and herbs, this is super easy. A ripe tomato will usually have ripe, viable seeds. For plants like squash, cucumber, beans, eggplant and okra, you may have to let the fruit grow until it is fully mature, which means it might not be enjoyable to eat, as it may be tough, sour or overripe. Just, pick the seeds out leaving behind the flesh for your compost pile or worm bin. For plants like lettuce, herbs, cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots, you will have to collect the seeds from the flowers once they bloom.  I usually find it easiest to pick the whole flower at this point.

2. Wash your seeds. You can skip this step for seeds that come from flowers, but for seeds that come from juicy, sticky fruits, you must wash off the residue. For large seeds like those from a squash or melon, place them in a colander. For small seeds like those from a tomato, place seeds in a fine mesh sieve and rinse the seeds thoroughly.

3. Place your seeds on a non-stick surface.  Wax paper, plastic wrap, parchment paper and freezer paper are all good choices.  Simply place your seeds on your preferred drying surface. If you are saving seeds from flowers, I often find it easiest to place the flower heads in a paper grocery bag.

4. Label your seeds. Write the name of the plant on the bag or place a labeled post-it-note next to your drying surface.

5. Dry your seeds. Let your seeds air-dry for one to two weeks or longer.  For flowers, its helpful to let the flowers completely dry out.  At that point, the seeds often will fall out on their own. Don’t worry, the bag will catch them!

6. Remove any debris from the seeds. You may find that blowing gently on your seeds will remove the chaff from the seeds.  Don’t worry if a little is left behind.

7. Store your seeds. You can use small jars, plastic bags or a folded piece of paper to store your seeds, but whatever container you use, make sure to label it with the plant type and variety. Now place your seeds in a cool, dry location.

Make your own very easy Daisies Hair Tie. The cutest hair accessory for a smooth transition from summer to fall.

What you will need: daisies! The faux flower kind, of course.

Disassemble your faux flowers. I had so much fun dissecting these, but in the end I actually only needed to remove the green piece in the back.

Put a drop of glue at the back of your flower. I used my trusty hot glue gun, but you can use another heavy duty glue. Now act fast! Press your hair tie down onto the daisy (do not superglue your fingers!). Now secure it in place by reattaching the back piece (in my case that green thingy).

It should look something like this. I added three more flowers to my Hair Tie. After you’ve let the glue dry for an appropriate amount of time, it’s ready for use! The more flowers you add and especially the more glue you use, the more rigid your hair tie becomes. But I can still easily slip it over my top knot, and in my humble opinion that’s the absolute best way to wear it.

DIY Burger Costume

AND LET HALLOWEEN 2015 COMMENCE! My all. time. FAVORITE. holiday of the year has arrived and along with it comes our annual Studio DIY In Costume series. You can check out all of our past costumes here and the hashtag here to see all the reader versions. There’s hundreds! We have such a blast coming up with new costumes every year and THIS year, we’ve taken it up a notch to bring you even MORE than we ever thought possible! There’s plenty of food ones, per our usual theme, but also some other pretty freaking awesome ones thrown in. So are you ready!?

We couldn’t think of a better way to kick off the season than with a DIY burger costume!!!!! Last year we made a burger pumpkin, and it only seemed necessary to make a matching costume this go around. The best part is, you basically can transform any nude dress into this costume with just an EASY DIY belt and some felt! Holy smokes. Let’s make it!!!

Supply List

Nude Dress or Top + Skirt (We used this top + skirt (Bought at the AA Factory in DTLA for cheaper!), and here’s a dress option too!) 3″ Wide Brown Elastic (Bought ours at a local craft store, but you could also use this elastic belt and turn the buckle to the back!) Felt in White, Yellow, Red and Green Scissors Hot Glue Gun Velcro

1. From felt, cut out: four or five scalloped strips of green, four triangles of yellow, three half circles of red and several dozen white seeds. 2. Lay out the white seeds all over the shirt (or top half of the dress) and get in them in a pattern you like. Then hot glue each one (you just need a small dot of hot glue on each!) to the top. I covered both the front and the back of mine. 3. If you’re using elastic (instead of a premade belt), measure the elastic around your waist and cut it to size, with about 1″ extra for velcro-ing. Hot glue the four yellow “cheese” triangles evenly spaced along the belt. 4. Next add the lettuce! Starting in the center, run a short line of hot glue and then attach the straight edge of your lettuce pieces, gathering them as you glue to give a ruffled look. 5. Glue the tomato slices on top of the lettuce. 6. Lastly cut two pieces of velcro to be the same width as your elastic and hot glue one to the front of one edge and the other to the back of the other edge. Done!

TURN YOUR INSTAGRAM PHOTOS INTO A FLIP CALENDAR

Even though January is long gone, I'm still trying to get organized. One fun idea I had for my office is this DIY Instagram calendar. It's super simple to do, and it makes keeping your schedule fun. If you are interested, here is another DIY calendar I did.

I did this DIY calendar in black and white, but you can pick any colors you want. Something bright would be fun for summer.

The calendar tutorial below has nine steps, but they are super simple steps. It won't take you long at all to make.

Step 1: Print your Instagram photos. I printed mine using the Instagram photo printing option through Walgreens - photo.walgreens.com. I used the Instagram photo print option which prints them to size 4” x 4.”

Step 2: Print + cut out the flip calendar templates. It is easiest to upload these to Walgreen’s as well. Print them just like the Instagram photos.

Step 3: Measure + cut your poster board to 19” x 18.”

Step 4: On the 18” side, score your poster board every 5” using a scoring tool or a knife and ruler. You will have 3” leftover. *If you are using a knife and ruler to score, simply hold the ruler where you want your score line to be, and run the backside of the knife alongside the ruler. When you fold, you will fold the flaps down.

Step 5: With the first flap folded over, punch holes 1” apart and 1” from the fold line. A small hole punch (just bigger than your wire) is best, but a regular hole punch will work fine.

Step 6: Line up your dates + photos onto the folded flap where you want them. Tape them on, and then flip the poster board over. Punch holes in the cards where the holes in your poster board are. Use these photos as a guide of where to punch holes in the rest of the dates and photos.

Step 7: Wrap your wire around a round item that is about 1 ½” in diameter making sure the ends are curved (you can use pliers here if need be).

Step 8: Starting at one end, insert your wire into the first hole. Twist your wire and guide it through the rest of the holes.

Step 9: Fold your poster board into a triangle shape. Secure it by gluing the 3” flap inside the triangle.

And now you have a chic DIY desk calendar! How easy was that? To make it even more fun, I suggest thinking about how you might match up dates with photos. For example, I put in a photo of my dad and me during our Father Daughter dance at my wedding to display on Father’s Day this year. I also included a photo from our engagement session for the date 9/5 because that is the day we got engaged! And of course our wedding day for 3/29.

Animal Kingdom Keychains

How is it that the one item that I carry around all day every day, is a 15 year old metal ring, holding peeling plastic discount cards for stores that no longer exist, along with keys to doors I’ll never walk through again?

And how is it that I’ve fallen into such a creative drought?

What I needed:

1. Something that would jumpstart my unusual lapse in ‘making’… the equivalent of writing down ‘get out of bed’ before a long list of more intimidating to-dos, just to feel accomplished when crossing it out.

2. A new keychain

Pretty simple, right?

So is this.

What YOU’LL need:

Plastic animals (check the party supply aisle) I found a whole bag for $2.00. and in this case, cheaper is better. They’ll be lighter and the plastic will be less resistant to your attachment screw.

Eyelet screws

key rings

Spray paint

Sealant (optional, but a good idea for something that’ll be thrown in bags and tossed around daily)

Optional – Other charms, beads, tassels (I have a ‘junk’ bag of these things that I’ve saved from broken jewelry, gifts, perfume bottles…you get it. I’m a hoarder of ‘miniature might-use-it some-day items’.

Screw your eye screws into the back of your plastic animals. That sounds violent. Maybe don’t be in the middle of this initial stage when your mom/boyfriend/child walks in the room. Depending on the animal, you may have to place the screw at an angle.

Take your animals outside and give them a coat of gold spray paint over a newspaper or poster board.  Once they’re dry (about 10 minutes), flip them and make sure they’re fully coated.

When dry, give them a coat of sealant to make them super durable.

Slide your shiny new animals onto your key rings.

Add your other charms, initials, or beads.

A seriously simple DIY to add some fun and fierce animal glam to your keys.
