your mom’s hands are tight on the wheel, rattling off last-minute advice while the campus slowly comes into view. “don’t forget to eat breakfast, and text me if you’re walking anywhere at night,”

you’re half-listening, half-taking in everything outside - the lawns, the clusters of students walking to classes, the rows of houses just off campus. one of them is louder than the rest. there’s music spilling out onto the street, red cups scattered in the grass, and a group of guys hanging out on the porch.
one in particular catches your attention for a second. he was tall, broad-shouldered, easy smile. he’s cute.
but that thought disappears just as quick when you notice the half-empty beer in his hand and the way a couple girls are draped over the arm of his chair. figures.
“what are you looking at?” your dad asks from the passenger seat. “nothing.” you force your gaze forward.

once you arrived on campus you took a look at all the students walking around. most people have already been here for weeks. classes are in full swing, friendships are forming, and you’re the last-minute transfer who barely made it in. the housing office had been at max capacity until a single dorm opened up - your only shot at attending this school.
after making it do your new dorm, your parents hauled boxes up the stairs and helped you get situated. your assigned roommate isn’t around, but from the mess of clothes spilling out of a half-open duffel and the unmade bed, you figure she’s probably a tomboy. maybe a little unorganized.
“at least you got the window side,” your dad says, setting down the last box.
“and the room’s not too bad,” your mom adds, already fussing with your sheets.
once everything’s set up and your parents hug you goodbye for the third time, exhaustion hits hard. you stretch out on your bed, telling yourself you’ll just rest your eyes for a minute.
the next thing you know, someone’s shaking your shoulder.
“uh… what the hell are you doing in my room?”
you jolt upright. standing over you is the guy from earlier. same messy brown curls, same broad frame, only now he’s in a hoodie and sweats, looking at you like you’re the one trespassing.
“uh… sleeping? in my bed? in my room..” you say, rubbing your eyes.
he raises an eyebrow. “funny, ‘cause I’m pretty sure this is my bed.”
“no, my roommate-” you start, then glance at the messy duffel and realize. oh. this has to be a mistake. you sit up straighter. “wait, no. there’s no way they’d put me with a guy.”
his mouth quirks. “or maybe you just wanted to be here. sneak in to see me?”
you give him a flat look. “don’t flatter yourself.”
“didn’t say you’d have a chance,” he says, grin widening.
you swing your legs off the bed, grabbing the papers from your desk. “look, dorm 419. this is my room.” you shove the sheet toward him.
he glances at it, then laughs under his breath. “419, yeah. except this is the guys’ dorm. so unless you suddenly joined a fraternity…” he gestures toward himself. “there’s definitely a mix-up.”
you cross your arms. “good. then we’re fixing it.” you grab his wrist before he can say anything else. “come on.”
the RA’s desk is wedged in the corner of the lobby, a small sliding window with a girl sitting behind it, leaning on her elbow with a look on her face that’s saying she’s counting the minutes until she can leave.
“hi,” you start, shoving your paperwork toward her. “there’s been a mistake. I was assigned dorm 419, but that’s his room-” you jerk a thumb at frat boy beside you, “-and it’s obviously in the guys’ dormitory. so I need to be moved to the girls building.” she takes the papers without much interest, scanning them lazily. “you’re a transfer?”
“yeah. last minute.” she shrugs. “then this is the only space we had. semesters already started and girls dorms are full. you can wait until something opens up… or get an off-campus apartment.”
“an apartment?” you repeat. “those are, like, triple the cost-”
“well, then i guess you’ll be waiting.” she pushes your papers back through the slot.
“but-”
the RA slides the window shut with a sharp clack. you stand there staring at the glass for a beat before your new roommates laugh cuts through the silence.
“guess you’re stuck with me, princess,” he says, that infuriating grin tugging at his mouth. “try not to snoop through my stuff.”
