The shit waifu of the day is:
Naoto Shirogane from Persona 4
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO THIS IS FAKE I MBLOCKING
w all that being said i don’t think naoto’s some horrible bitter person or something… i think she’s very considerate and sweet…
Keep reading
here’s a couple things i see as big parts of naoto’s character that i’ve noticed are generally overlooked in favor of one or two simple personality traits
she’s foreign… she’s half british on both of her parents’ sides, an npc says so in golden and it’s gotta be true or they wouldn’t have bothered to put it in the game (and if it was false information they’d have made that clear). during her social link, yakushiji also says, “regardless of her heritage or gender” keyword: heritage, which leads me to believe she may have faced some adversity for being mixed as well.
she has a bad temper, like tantrum bad. they point it out several times and she even scolds herself for it during the fight with her shadow… also look at her stank ass face she looks like she’s about to spit on someone half the time. she is prone to childish fits of rage.
she’s really a mix of shy/polite and aggressive/stuck up, i think it really falls on a natural reaction to who she’s interacting with. she can be so sweet and clumsy in private but she can be a sarcastic shit eating asshole as well, she belittles her classmates and inadvertently insults the intelligence of most everybody she talks to. she’s cocky and sticks her nose up, it’s how she’s had to defend herself while working with the police.
adding to that, she may seem well-adjusted with all the fancy talk and smooth explanations when it comes to work but she’s really at a loss when it comes to having fun and just interacting with regular friends. truthfully i think a a shakier adjustment into hanging out with everyone may have been more accurate but the hour long lectures and general kill joy attitude of hers is good enough for the sake of time.
in general, i don’t think the more…. volatile aspects of her personality are touched upon in enough detail… outside of being emotionally distant… having no filter, ignoring/hurting the feelings of everyone around her… lmao
also i’m sure we all know this already but she’s a freak… she is truly a freak out of all the romances in the game she says the wildest shit i’ve ever heard. thirsty!
the shirogane estate.. is not,,,, in inaba
a short individual known for artificially altering their height, who appears to be calm and calculating, when in reality they’re a giant nerd who gets easily excited & flustered. they are initially a somewhat antagonistic figure, then later mellow to a begrudging ally and friend of the protagonists, before joining them for the common cause.
am i talking about peridot or naoto shirogane
NAOTO IS TRANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TBH YEAH AND NAOTO JUST SAYS MY DREAM IS NOT TO BE A GROWN MAN DETECTIVE ITS TO ACCEPT U MY SHADOW AND THE SHADOW IS SAYING LIKE I JUST WANNA BE A MAN SOO
naoto loves yu
disclaimer : all content in this post is up to interpretation, and almost everything i say is my own opinion. it’s okay to have your own opinion, but please don’t hate. just know opinions =/= facts. and, to be honest, i’m biased.
thesis
out of all the girls you can date in p4/p4g, i can wholeheartedly say naoto is the best choice for yu. by far, from what i’ve observed, she cares the most for yu, from her social links and other interactions with him.
let’s talk kanji and naoto first, though.
kanji and naoto
it can be said with almost 100% certainty that kanji likes naoto. i don’t think anyone can deny this–
–but the real mystery here is how naoto feels for kanji.
naoto’s feelings for kanji
naoto–by all my own observations–thinks of kanji as nothing more than a friend. i think the only “hint” of the pairing on naoto’s side is that she blushes when she falls on him during the ski trip, but if i fell on top of anyone i’d blush too. it really doesn’t mean anything.
besides, kanji is blushing far more than she is. (to be honest, she just looks annoyed, or embarrassed that she fell.)
persona 4 arena/ultimax has scenes, (particularly kanji’s alternate ending), with naoto blushing over only calling him kanji, but she would probably be flustered with anyone asking that due to the meaning it holds. i don’t think she was particularly flustered by kanji asking that. he was talking about how formal she speaks, and it probably provoked some feelings within her about herself.
before this, he kept going on and on about how annoying it was that she was proper with him. (even in the regular story mode he talks about her way of speech, and she seems very bothered by it.)
he basically tried to bully her into becoming more intimate when she clearly doesn’t want to. (she doesn’t even do what he asks, she stills calls him kanji-kun immediately afterwards.
she tries to say “kanji” later on, but she seems… distant. or…antagonized. or just generally irked.)
either way, during this scene, she simply seems like a concerned friend.
naoto, in general, seems uninterested in kanji beyond friendship. the only reason she blushes is because he tries to be intimate with her, and because of her lack of experience she gets flustered. she gets flustered with yu, too, but she seems far more into it with him. i can’t say for sure whether or not she likes kanji, but i would think she really doesn’t.
how kanji treats naoto
the way kanji acts around her really rubs me the wrong way. he’s always telling her to do things, like trying to force her to be in the pageant.
(this is stemmed from his denial of his feelings for naoto as a boy. this rejection of his sexuality is still not an acceptable excuse for his actions, however.)
yu is the only one who objects to the idea (if you choose the right dialogue option).
kanji’s “make me a man” attitude just makes me really dislike* him and the way he treats naoto. she’s really not comfortable with feminine things, like pageants, swimsuits and such–
–yet kanji tries to force into doing those things, (or guilt her, at least). i doubt kanji has bad intentions, but he definitely shows it in a cringe-worthy way.
kanji doesn’t accept naoto for who she is
naoto’s shadow event and social link are all about her accepting herself, and others accepting her, too.
kanji tries to guilt her into being someone she isn’t, while yu accepts her for who she is :
and…
…and many more beautiful cases. (in fact, let me direct you to this post for a few more examples.)
yu and naoto
because you, the player, chooses how yu reacts to the world around him, it’s very tricky to deal with his side of things. but there still are limited options.
in general, (or at least going by options in her social link) the player has the choice of accepting naoto. there are multiple occasions where he can come out and tell her he loves her for who she is.
when the investigation team faces izanami-no-okami in the true ending, she sends yu’s friends to the underworld, forcing him to watch as his friends die one by one. eventually it’s his turn to face death, but right as he’s about to give up his friends encourage him to go on living and fighting. naoto’s words of motiviation strike me as particularily affectionate, and it gives you a sense that he really does accept naoto.
(accepting naoto)
(affectionate naoto)
and this happens even if you didn’t romance her. the words “never fear… we’re always together” seem to me that naoto is telling you she’s here for you whenever you need her, but her wording implies she wants to be there with you, not just for you.
it certainly looks like she has some sort of feelings for yu. even if it isn’t completely romantic, she still has a deep respect for him.
other hints on naoto’s side
- one rainy early morning when yu, yosuke, kanji, and naoto meet up at an intersection on the way to school. only yu and naoto have umbrellas (which match, btw) so yosuke and kanji share because they don’t want to walk in the rain without one. kanji and yosuke fight over who they’re paired with (yosuke wants to go with yu, kanji is far too embaressed to go with naoto), but eventually the decision falls to you. if you choose to go with naoto yourself, leaving the other two with your own umbrella, she’ll blush…
…and state she has no qualms about the decision.
sharing an umbrella is a sign of intimacy or romance in japanese manga, (not real-life japan), or so i’ve heard.
- if you fail to defeat adachi’s dungeon by december 24th, naoto will call you saying the town is overrun with shadows, and you hear her scream in agony as she dies. despite her impending and unfortunate death, she decides to call yu. she calls yu as she reaches her end. she calls yu and not kanji or rise or anyone else.
- during their adventures in the TV world, naoto comments on yu’s outfit changes, mostly to point out the humor in them.
- out of all yu’s romances, naoto is the only one to ask about him.
- speaking of, during her social link you must recall things you’ve learned about her to continue.
(when asked a place she’d be fond of, choosing ‘somewhere high’)
(when asked about something she can’t stand to do, choosing ‘throwing things away’)
- she outright tells you she thinks about you a lot.
- she always wants to be with you.
- (she wishes to be together on new year’s.)
- on christmas eve, she gives you a watch that tells you where she is, and she has one to match.
- getting distracted by yu.
- in persona q, during the group date cafe, answering the questions to get naoto gives you a few adorable hints.
- in naoto’s story mode in persona 4 arena, her first opponent is yu. but even before then, she’s thinking about him after seeing the video.
- she also feels safe and relived that yu is with her in this strange, new TV world. she feels strong when he’s around. and when he can’t come with her, she’s hesitant to go on.
- in persona 4: dancing all night, you begin the game with naoto waiting for a dance lesson from rise. just you and naoto. alone. together.
at one point, early in, naoto and yu are wondering where she is. naoto wonders if rise is in trouble, and says this:
from the look on her face (and the tone of her voice), she seems somewhat upset of rise’s affections for yu.
later on, in the TV world, the older students and younger students split up, leaving naoto, rise, kanji and teddie together. at the beginning, she has this exchange with teddie regarding yu:
insinuating she’s uncomfortable without yu–and that she feels safe with him.
- besides that, both naoto and yu are living in tokyo after the events of p4g. that would probably mean they hang out far more often than the others in inaba. although still not entirely all that often, since she’s most likely busy with work. but this is all speculation.
conclusion
kanji doesn’t treat naoto the way you should treat a person you care , or anyone for that matter. he doesn’t accept her true self, and pushes her to do things she doesn’t want to do. yu, however, accepts her for who she truly, really is, and she loves that. it’s important to her. naoto likes yu; she has a deep admiration and it’s possible she even loves him.
it’s canon okay
(i’ll add more if i ever find anything else out and im not lazy as fuck. i literally spent all day on this post bc i’m a fucking loser and i stayed home from school.)
* don’t get me wrong. i love kanji… when he’s not around or talking about naoto. he’s very sweet, especially in his social link. kanji isn’t a bad guy by any means, and that’s not what i’m trying to make you think, but the way he handles his crush on naoto is not acceptable to me.
Now, to be frank, I disagree. I could go on to a whole post about why I do, but I one thing stood out to me more and I wanna point out something about it. Really, I love KanjiXNaoto and can’t stand YuXNaoto, but for the sake of a healthy argument I like to put those aside for now. For starters, I understand that Naoto may have romantic feelings towards Yu, but that’s quite a given for the sole purpose of being a romantic option. Besides, every single person is in love with Yu, heck even Yosuke, Nanako even said she wanted to marry him. I’m not saying Naoto has romantic feelings for Kanji, I’m sure that she admires him just as much as she does for Narukami, but there is no evidence that Naoto loves Narukami without pursuing her for the romance route. Just the same as there is no evidence that Naoto loves Kanji. Naoto loves her friends, as friends, end of story. But we shippers just ship like hell and make up stuff to please ourselves and each other.
Yet despite that fact, I don’t think the first part of your conclusion is very right, and yes very biased too, but you have pointed it out at the beginning and I give you a toast for that. There are many occasions that show that Kanji cares for Naoto, and I believe that out of everyone in the group Kanji has more to relate with her than anyone can. For example, both of them lost at least a parent, they have a similar character but opposites in a way with Kanji liking ‘female’ hobbies and Naoto liking ‘male’ hobbies, gender and sexuality issues even - But back to the one thing that stood out to me was the whole beauty pageant thing. In your words, and I quote ‘ the way kanji acts around her really rubs me the wrong way. he’s always telling her to do things, like trying to force her to be in the pageant.’
And you said that Yu is the only one to object the idea, but it depends on the player’s dialogue choice.
But if we use the actual Yu Narukami without the influence of a player choosing his dialogue or actions, he too agrees that they should attend the pageant, so in a way…would you say he’s forcing ‘everyone’ to? Source: Persona 4 Animation ( which is practically what Yu Narukami really is supposed to be: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9Ld7B9qQ9Y )
I myself do not know his reason as it’s been ‘fastforwarded’ for the sole purpose of comedy, but for whatever reason he still said that ‘they should’. And judging by the fact it took 30 minutes… i think (excuse or correct me, I have yet to learn kanji) he was pretty passionate about wanting them to attend the pageant. So, to finish, Narukami too wants Naoto in a swimsuit…for whatever reason. And in my mind, it’s just the same as telling her to do things… Besides in the end, Kanji said in the animation that it didn’t matter she didn’t get on the pageant in the end ‘she tried her best and that’s what matters’ ( of course with a nosebleed, but comedy haha gotta love it). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_pygW92wkY
All in all, I understand why people like Yu and Naoto together. And I understand as well that some don’t like Kanji and Naoto together. TO EACH THEIR OWN.
Also, Naoto is the only one who cares about Yu the most… I’ve practically dated every single person in the game, and in my opinion they all care about each other equally. It may not be easy to see it with others, but I like looking in between the lines and I can say that they do care a lot about each other. Yes she has a deep admiration for him, but I doubt, if the player does not romance her that she is in love with him. It’s not canon because no romantic relationship in this game is partially canon asides from Yu and Marie, (Rise and Yu too, but it seems more one-sided for now), because all and all THEY HAD ONE HUGE BUTT 12 EPISODE ANIME BASED on their relationship and Marie is the only one who’s ever EVER proclaimed her love to Yu, and kissed him (asides from Margaret).
and and we can’t forget that Yosuke loves Yu more than anyone.
So for my final conclusion:
Naoto LOVES HER FRIENDS, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEIR FRIENDLY HUMAN POOPY BEINGS! We do not know if she does love Yu specifically. Kanji accepts Naoto just as much as Yu does, or anyone does, maybe has more things to relate to her which makes him understand her far more than anyone else can. Kanji can be very bashful and in your face, he is not a man of words and not soft spoken like Yu is, but it doesn’t make him a total ass just for asking someone to attend a pageant for the sole purpose of figuring out his sexuality which he is constantly picked on by everyone, and yes, even his friends.
PEACE OUT -
you make a very good point. i mean, shipping (that isn’t clearly canon) is always up to interpretation and a lot of people are biased. i definitively am.
naoto for sure cares about kanji. there’s no doubt so does. but my point is that she seems particularly affection towards yu. but it can be argued it’s for her romance option.
my main point here, though, is that if a real person acted like kanji did to naoto, telling her “just do it, damn it” when she’s CLEARLY uncomfortable with the entire situation, i would probably be incredibly creeped out and feel immensely shitty. naoto doesn’t like feminine things, like being in swimsuits and other things. she’s comfortable presenting masculinely, and not the opposite. if a real person tried to get me to dress femininely against my will, borderline guilting me, i would literally never speak to them agiain. but thats just me..
i suppose, though, that this is a game. these arent real people. games are not 100% realistic. but this game is so important to me, and naively these characters give me a real feeling of realism. i felt at home in this world and game, and kanji’s words and actions towards naoto made me extremely nauseous. i guess this analysis is very personal to me, and i identify with naoto so much, so i guess sometimes i feel like im her and shes me. so it almost felt like kanji was doing this to me–or someone i really care about–and i felt so sick.
i know these characters are not real. i know im naive and just very sad to think of these characters in such an intimate way, but that’s how i feel. i guess im just really protectice of something i really care about.
also! kanji is so sweet. i love him. hes not a bad guy in any way (besides the stuff w naoto) and its very clear he cares for her. he really does. i just really dont like the way he does it? its not acceptable to me? but seriously, kanji is so very sweet.
thank you so much for being polite. i really appreciate it. and i appreciate your points! you made a good argument.
i love how naoto types in all caps….. probably a memer too
ok but hear me out .
