do you have any tips for me as somebody whos trying to accurately write a character with npd?

hi!!!! okay so I can try on this but beware beware i'm low on spoons and shit at typing today wah wah wah

SO big glaring tip, don't villainize the NPD symptoms or anything like that,, if that makes sense!! i've seen so many narc-coded characters written as horrible villains and it sucks

if they are a villain make sure to make is obvious its not just because they've got NPD

ALSO make sure the character isn't just a one-note "I want all the love in the world" narc,, because while wanting and needing attention is part of it it definitely isnt everything!! remember to write their low-moments such as a black split or narc crash or anything like that!!! it can help flesh out the character and keep them from getting steriotypical

more stuff that seems really NPD coded are things like focus on outward appearance, a lower inner-self esteem while portraying a perfect image, a general focus on what others could be thinking, whatever whatever im not the typer rn

I don’t want to know about your family member with a personality disorder, how they’re a horrible person or how that means we’re all inherently bad. I don’t want to hear about your ex who had a personality disorder who was the scum of the Earth. I don’t want to be told about the person in your life with my disorder that is the worst person you have ever met. I don’t need to listen to you telling me that we’re all monsters because one person, who has a personality disorder or you’ve just interpreted them to have the disorder, is horrible. I don’t need to prove to you that I deserve human rights. If you just hear I have a personality disorder and assume I’m manipulative and abusive, you are ableist! I do not care about your past with personality disorders. I do not want to be demonised just because you want to generalise an entire group of mental illness. You cannot get away with stigmatising vulnerable people because of their reactions to trauma.

The thing is that if there was any positive resources for Personality Disorders, we would be able to get better. Instead, if we look up “narcissist help”, articles come up with “how to destroy a narcissist” and “they’re self absorbed, entitled and manipulative”. You look up your disorder and you just get things that articles on how other people can destroy your mental health, just because you have your condition, because of the trauma that caused you to have this personality disorder. It’s like they don’t want us to get better, they just want us to know how we’re horrible. They need people to demonise us, they want us to be destroyed. They make sure that everything hurts us. They expect us to recover then stigmatise the things we are trying to fix. That doesn’t convince us to get better, that convinces us to become the worst version of ourselves.

It’s hurtful to know that people think so lowly of me for something I can’t control.

Please think that I’m going to abuse, hurt, and manipulate people because I have a disorder.

I’m 100% sure people wouldn’t like it if I started saying that “anxiety abuse” or “depression abuse” were a thing, would they??
