The morning after was the least pleasant morning he’s ever had. Everything was still in his house, a quietness that ran so deep, a stillness that felt uneasy. The smell of breakfast was conspicuously absent, as was the sound of his father’s humming along to the very loud R.D. Burman hits that usually accompanied mornings.
Max was alone in this house and he felt terrible.
Despite not drinking at all the night before, his anxiety slowly turned into dread and then panic, accompanied the entire time by nausea. His father wasn’t picking up his phone, texts to his aunts weren’t sending, and Tali, though receiving his messages, wasn’t answering him.
He’d just have to go see her; she was the most important thing right now, especially if her parents weren’t responding either. Was it everyone?
The cars were still in the driveway, keys where they always were, and there hadn’t been any sign of a break in or conflict at all. He’d arrived prepared on Tali’s doorstep, the words ready to just stumble out of him. Max paced on her porch after ringing the doorbell, waiting for her to come to the door.
“Please be home, please be home,” he murmured, sighing. She wouldn’t be able to fix it, but they’d be able to figure something out together.
After the party Natalia went home and collapsed in a heap on her bed. She’d thankfully managed to put some comfier clothes on to sleep, but waking up now she didn’t seem to have made it under the covers. This little parasite was sucking the life out of her, she had never been so tired.
She woke to her phone’s incessant buzzing. Natalia almost put it on Do Not Disturb so that she could sleep for a few more hours, but the messages caught her attention. A few from Max, not surprising, but made her heart ache. She’d reply later. The rest were from a variety of her classmates.
Natalia read through them all, trying to make sense of what she was reading. A photo someone had sent her of a never ending forest had her almost running from the house to check for herself, but a sudden wave of nausea stopped her.
Then the doorbell rang. Natalia made her way downstairs, taking deep breaths to try to calm the sickness. She opened the door quickly, only to see Max standing there. Why wouldn’t he just let her avoid him?
“Max,” she greeted him, before the overwhelming urge to be sick hit her. She ran from the door, leaving it wide open and him standing there. She managed to make it to the downstairs bathroom in time, emptying her stomach contents into the toilet bowl.
