The previous record, the Aesthesis ep,released 3 years ago, when the band was still called Empyrean, already had some of the main features that are in the new full-lenght The Funeral Garden, such as the traditional brutal sound of death metal and of deathcore, the harsh vocals and a heavy dose of technicism.
What’s really impressive about the new record is that it’s not an “ordinary” technical death metal album,it’s the “ Caecus’ ” album.
What I mean with the name “Caecus”? I mean the marriage between an atmospheric sound and the brutal one.
This album is not full of sterile technicism,in fact it doesn’t need a huge effort to listen to it,it’s not easy-listening obviously, but the suggestive sound of the tracks keep the listener concentrated in paying attention to the whole album.
So,let’s have a look at the tracks.
The Smockestack Vigil is definitely a heavy, great opener track such as Womb Of The Earth.
The title track is much more evocative and atmospheric, but Perpetual Nightfall is the perfect emblem of what I think it’s the essence of this record:first,I can notice more than just the influence of Cynic(that can be heard throughout the album),in fact at the beginning this track reminded me of Rishloo(if you don’t know them, check them out, they’re prog metal),when the song evolved I realized that I could even hear some blackgaze,so,I think that this track is genial,it has many shades and it still preserves its power.
As Grains Of Sand has amazed me thanks to the great work of both the guitarist and the bassist.
Fragile Bones is probably the craziest track, the most “schizoprenic”,and if you listen to it you’ll understand what I mean.
The album ends with Mourning Never Came which shows for the last time the ability of the musicians, also it has a darker atmosphere and the lyrics reflect this aspect.
To sum up,this album is well produced, every instrument is valorised as well as the vocals, furthermore if you like Cynic,Rishloo and Death Metal, you’ll appreciate this record.
In these years is not so easy to find an original and solid metal record,so if you’re looking for new music, you need to buy this album.
Personally I wish all the best for this band,I can’t wait for a new record!
