Dream Profession

When my daughter had her first birthday, it became clear to me that I needed to make a change. The long, sometimes irregular hours I had as a detective were interfering with the milestones as she grew up. I wanted to have more of a say in when I worked and when it was time for family. Taking care of Cora and raising her shouldn’t fall on my wife’s shoulders alone. 

Something I had been thinking about was becoming a private investigator. Leaving the police force but maybe working along with them from time to time. It was scary thinking about going out on my own and starting something completely new, but PJ was behind me 100%. Many private investigators I knew had been cops or wished that they had been previously. 

The experience you get while working as a police officer is similar to the skill set needed to be a private investigator. Conducting investigations, gathering information, and interviewing suspects are all critical. Cops already have these skills and have years of experience using these techniques in real-life situations. 

As a detective, I’m also quite familiar with local legal processes and can use this understanding to shape investigations that are important for any potential clients. I even have experience as a court witness. Not my favorite part of the job, but I’m good at it. 

Another thing in my favor would be the many contacts in the community I’ve developed over the years. These contacts could be especially valuable when I find myself in need of advice or information. From lawyers investigating similar cases to fellow cops with access to databases and vital stats, contacts are necessary for closing cases.

I also think that the professionalism I have learned over the years will serve me well as I deal with clients and investigate their problems. Or, when I have to turn down people, I might not feel I can help. No one likes to hear no, but sometimes it has to be said, right? 

Anyway, I’ve been studying hard with PJ’s encouragement and finally got my PI license from the state. I haven’t left the force yet because I’m still talking to a few former cops who are PIs and a buddy on the force who is finishing his classes now. I haven’t spoken to PJ too much about this step, but we’re thinking of setting up an agency together. Who knows what the future will hold a year from now? I do know that I don’t want to miss any more time with Cora than I have. That’s for sure.
