what do you want to be when you grow up?
I don't know yet. And I'm pretty grown.
Hi.
God, That's Good! || Nathan + Mary
Mary gave Nathan a slight grin and then put her attention on the walk that lay ahead of them. She would’ve never guessed that the way she would’ve been spending this Christmas was with a nice guy, outside her home. But it was nice, nonetheless. She began to trail close behind him and smiled back. “Well, I guess that’s a probability we should’ve considered,” She agreed with a slight laugh. “There is. Or that they’re closed for some other reason. I guess we should be glad that Christmas wasn’t on a Sunday this year, otherwise, I’m fairly certain we’d be completely out of luck.” She said with a smile. Had it been on a Sunday, then they’d likely be out of luck, considering many restaurants close on that day. Even if it had been on a Sunday, however, it was better than sitting in her home alone.
It was nice to be out this Christmas, no matter how unexpected. Nathan was very kind and it was a good feeling to be out in the open air. She’d become so accustomed to the indoors; her house, the school, the restaurant, she hardly remembered what it felt like to be outside any longer. Mary was gracious to be doing something today as opposed to last Christmas when she, for the most part, sat alone. She knew that she would’ve enjoyed it enough with anyone, but there was something about Nathan that she liked. It was very kind of him to do this with her, and she hoped that they’d find somewhere that they could spend the day.
Nathan nodded in agreement. Had Christmas fallen on a Sunday (like it did last year), they would have had a problem. Well, a bigger problem than they had now. It was their luck that it hadn't fallen on a Sunday, and instead on a business day for people that didn't celebrate Christmas. Surprisingly it was the first thing that had gone right for Nathan in a while. It was only a little unsettling from him. The last thing that went right for him ended up going down in flames. The chances of it happening again were extremely high, but he hoped that it wouldn't happen in Christmas. If there was a God, and he had to pick one day for something to work out, it would have been today. Not only was he in need for one decent day out of the lot of them, but he wanted to show Mary a good time. At least a good meal.
"I'm sure we would have figured something out," He murmured, shrugging slightly. "You're a smart girl, I'm assuming. And I've been known to have a few good ideas in my day. Although I'm almost positive that something will be open." Looking back down at the ground, he let himself absorb everything for the first time in a while. This wasn't how he planned to spend his Christmas. In fact, it was exactly opposite. But everything about this felt like how this day was supposed to happen. He was in good company, and it was too blistering cold out. Taking in a sharp breath, a smile settled onto his face. It was a first time in quite awhile that he was actually feeling good.
It's good that you aren't just jumping from Carter to someone else immediately. You take your time with your heart, Nathan. Take your time.
I honestly wasn't expecting you to say something like this. But I really appreciate it.
Do you still have feelings for Carter?
Yeah. I do. That's something a person can't exactly get over quickly.
God, That's Good! || Nathan + Mary
Looking down at her gift from Nathan, she realized that it’d probably be the only gift she got for Christmas, as no one in her family was alive to give her one, and she didn’t have many close friends. Clutching it a bit tighter in her hand to ensure that it wouldn’t slip out, she turned back to Nathan. In the recess of her mind when she’d been staring at his gift to her, she’d known he’d been saying something. Taking a minute to try and figure out what, she quickly replied. “I really appreciate your’s too, a lot.” It was an improvement from the year before, too. Chris, her brother, had failed to get her anything and spent Christmas at the bar.
“Yeah, that sounds good.” She responded, realizing that it’d likely be the more reasonable option. She’d hardly ever been out farther than the street she was currently on, so it was needless to say she had no clue what restaurants were ahead. The restaurant she worked at was right up the street from the humble place she lived, and because she hardly got out aside from going to work or school, she didn’t know many places in Hava. However, she also knew where the bar was located, due to countless drives there to save her brother from drunk-driving into another car, but Mary highly doubted that was where they’d be going.
Nathan glanced shyly over at Mary before shoving his hands back down into his pockets. It was so out of his character to be out today, and with someone, nonetheless. But he was already enjoying the day, and having Mary for company. He began to walk forward and gave her a smile. "What happens if nothing's open today?" He chuckled. "There is always the possibility that every restaurant owner in this town celebrates Christmas. However unlikely it may seem." A tiny grin stayed on Nathan's face. He would never admit it, but it was actually nice to be able to do something today other than sitting alone and brooding over how shitty his situation was.
Nathan shifted his eyes down to the cement. There was always a chance he was going to screw it up. He would probably spill his drink on her or accidentally end up tripping her. Something was going to happen. Everything was inevitable that way. And the harder he tried to not mess up, the chances of having it happen (again) were extremely high. He sighed softly and looked back over at her. She was such a pretty girl, and a nice one, too. She deserved to have a nice Christmas.
Is there anyone who's caught your eye? *wink wink*
No. Feelings are stupid.
Merry fucking Christmas.
Obviously I missed a great party last night.
I know you were kidding. I was just messing with you. And yeah, I do mean Les Mis. But it’s this huge joke that no one in the actual fucking Earth can pronounce Les Miserables, so Meg calls it the Miserable Lesbians movie. It’s a play on words, I guess.
Oh. I...um. Yeah. Okay.
Obviously I missed a great party last night.
Trust me, she’ll find you again. And, um, nice to know you assume people who don’t automatically talk to are dead. Really nice, man. But, no, she’s not dead. She has to live until Christmas or I will murder her for not going with me to see Miserable Lesbians.
Oh, I believe that. She was pretty....adamant about it. And...I...um. Fuck. I should just stop speaking. I knew she was alive. I'm pretty sure I saw her in town a couple of time. I was kidding. Again. Miserable Lesbians? I'm pretty sure you mean Les Mis and not some weird porn that you can only watch on Christmas.
Obviously I missed a great party last night.
She asked you to sing for her? Oh, God, that does sound like something she’d ask.
Erm. Yeah. But I haven't heard from her since.
I assumed she died. Guess I'm wrong.
Obviously I missed a great party last night.
That’s a relief. Both those options do not sound ideal. She’s nice… most of the time. The other half she’s really cool, I guess.
No, no. No drugs. Especially off anyone's....anything. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I met her once upon a time. I think we made plans so I could sing her a song, but never went through with it. Whoops.
God, That's Good! || Nathan + Mary
Mary gave a brief smile as she took the box from Nathan’s hands. “Thank you, Nathan. I, um, got you something, too…” She said, handing him what she found to be a pitiful card. “Sorry it’s not much,” she continued, not going into as much detail as she could have. She could have said that she didn’t exactly know what he liked, that she was low on money, but it was too wordy. It was best to get to the point quickly. However, she figured that getting him a card was better than showing up empty-handed and realizing he’d gotten her something, even if it was small, as well. It was also better than showing up with something expensive and showy, as if to rub it in Nathan’s face that she’d gotten him something big and he’d shown up with a box of chocolates. It was better than many possibilities.
“I don’t know many restaurants here. I usually just make microwavable meals,” she said with a slight laugh. The only restaurants she ever heard of were the expensive ones and the one she worked at. She assumed it’d be better not to go to an expensive restaurant since she was hard on cash and she didn’t want Nathan to have to pay for the entire meal. There were likely many other restaurants in Hava Hills that weren’t for the rich and privileged.
Nathan felt the blood rush to his cheeks as he took the card from Mary. He honestly didn't expect to get anything for Christmas with his family far away and all his friends dropping off the face of the planet. Even something as simple as a card was enough to brighten his day just a little. "Oh. Thank you." He murmured, slipping the card into his pocket. "That was really nice of you. You didn't have to do that and I really appreciate it." Stopping himself before he rambled on and on, like he had the tendency to do when he got nervous. He settled on another goofy smile and fumbled with his hands a bit before clasping them in front of him.
Nathan nodded slowly. "Yeah, I don't eat out much either." He bit back the "because I'm fucking dirt poor" that threatened to spill from his lips. Truth be told, Nathan had only knew of the restaurant that Carter worked at, and he was barely familiar with that one. "Why don't we, just, uh, walk and see if anything's open? Since we're both pretty clueless when it comes to Hava's restaurant selection." Nathan really hoped he wasn't making himself look like a jackass. Enough people were walking out of his life and he didn't want that to happen with this girl who could potentially be a new friend to him. He didn't want Mary to walk out of his life before she was ever in it.
Obviously I missed a great party last night.
And then making gifs from the fights. Oh what do I do with my life…
I’m Skipper by the way. You?
No, don't worry. I'm not much better. All I do is watch cat videos. I'm Nathan.
Obviously I missed a great party last night.
…Do a what now? Please tell me you’re talking about the whore and not Meghan?
Oh god, I'm mortified. No I don't want to do a line of anyone. I was kidding. Meghan's a nice person though. I think I met her before.
When you were 9, what'd you want to be when you grew up? Why?
I wanted to be a cashier. Seemed like the dream job. Obviously I excelled in life.
What are you doing over Christmas?
What I do every day of the year. Make music for money.
