My hand is swelling up
That's not good. What did you do?
Then how do you explain that she could just scratch us out of a… a picture, and we end up here?
New family? What new family?
I don't know, okay! There is something else though. I-I can't remember it... I can't remember how I ended up here. I was at work... I had just been talking to Alexis. I went to my office, sat down, and when I opened my eyes again, I was here. I don't remember much more inbetween but it can't be magic. There isn't such a thing.
Didn't you see them walking into the house? It was after the police arrived... like a few days later.
A Stormy Night - Caroline + Nathan
It was on nights like this that Caroline felt as if she was in the real world again. Like all the other nights where she began to feel this way, a sudden storm had interrupted her very peaceful slumber, and it had done so in such a way that she could do nothing but start to dream and then wake up again. Both her dreams and her thoughts were of another place entirely; both her dreams and her thoughts were of outside.
It was both her past and what could have been that taunted her on these noisy nights. They taunted her in both no particular order and no particular way, which meant that this was the only variation she ever had in her life. The variation had begun exciting her so much so that she longed for the nightmares to come to her.
Tonight was very much a lucky night for the fact that she was experiencing these nightmares but still rain fell from her eyes. The droplets were few and far between but she knew that it wouldn’t be long until she had two waterfalls to contend with.
Her eyes began to glitter when she actually sat up. There wasn’t a lot of light in the room, but there was obviously enough, or there wouldn’t be any reflection. There weren’t any other eyes in the room or the light would have let her notice them - but this was a good thing. The lack of people meant that she could feel safer in the darkness.
She arose and made her way to a special little place. It wasn’t much, it was just the place she went to if she wasn’t in her bed. She thought she could hear someone as soon as she sat down but she decided everyone had to be sleeping, or she would have seen someone on the way down.
She lit the candle beside her then took her seat, falling back to sleep in seconds before finally waking up when someone blew out her candle and leant over her.
Ever since his arrival in Lanchire, Nathan had felt nothing but suspicious. Surely the chief had noticed his lack of attendance to work. Usually, that meant they would look into it, considering that they had nothing better to do. And also adding in the fact that he disappeared before Alexis' case was closed. But he had already felt in the many hours of being in the mansion that his release was hopeless. Maybe his coworkers could care less that he was gone. In his eyes, he was a decent cop, and the others just wanted to rid of him anyway.
But Nathan had fallen into place in the old building. More and more people appeared in the rooms available, and he often became acquainted with them. There were many children, and young adults there, which he often tried to take under his wing. He had always wanted children of his own, and seeing as it wasn't going to happen now, he had to give these children some parental influence. And so more often than not, Nathan would scold those who were getting too rambunctious, and comfort those who had bad dreams.
He didn't sleep very much himself. He found himself sitting in a chair for extended periods of time, occasionally dozing off, but mostly staying awake. And that night was just another night in the life. The night was a stormy one, and a dark one. He couldn't see a great deal throughout the hall he was sitting in. But there was a light that did appear.
Nathan was staring down at his hands folded over his stomach when he was aware of a light in his peripheral vision. He immediately looked up to see the light of a candle coming from the doorway near by. He was quiet as he could see the shadow of his young girl. It didn't take long before the noise in her room stopped.
He waited awhile before rising, and walking to the doorway. As Nathan peered into the room, he noticed the young girl fast asleep. He blew out the candle and moved over to her bed where he pulled the blanket up around her to tuck her in.
They don’t even see us, do they? I think it’s part of the magic.
They have to be able to see us. There is no such thing as magic. And you know when that new family came in, that kid looked suspicious. He must have caught a glimpse.
No, I know exactly how you feel actually. But I don’t think it’ll stop me from still looking.
I can’t help but hope someone will see me one day…but you know what they say about hope—it just breeds eternal misery.
That's a very true thing about hope. But I guess it's just bred so much misery that I'll probably never be hopeful again.
We're all damned anyway.
Good afternoon... or evening. I can't really tell. Nor do I feel like walking to a window to find out.
I guess, after awhile, you just get tired of looking out the windows and hoping someone will see you.
At least I have.
