Nathaniel Flint should have been one of a kind, a bountiful heir to the Flint family name, held in high regard by both family and peers alike. His mother, Colette and his father, Decius had married two years prior to his birth, and all eyes were on the couple to continue the Flint line, hopeful that both an heir and spare would follow in quick succession of their marriage. It took a while for the pair to warm to each other, two young adults thrust into a marriage with little to no knowledge of each other, but after time, Decius seemed to be smitten with Colette, or so Nathaniel's mother thought.
1955 had been a busy year for Decius Flint, building a family with his wife and abandoning his pregnant lover. Decius had previously been in love with another woman, promising her the earth, moon and stars before bolting when she announced her pregnancy. Decius had panicked, trying to keep the news out of the earshot of both his wife, and his extended family. Hopeful that Colette, who was also newly pregnant at the time, never found out. But there was only so long that Decius could cover his tracks, as his first son, Lucian was born at the end of 1955, just a few months prior to the birth of Nathaniel, his legitimate boy. Bestowed the Flint name upon birth, there was a matter of days before the news got back to the Flint family, and Colette was heartbroken by the news.
The mood was frosty between Decius and Colette when Nathaniel joined them, Colette felt stung by the betrayal which was only worsened by Decius' lack of accountability. Decius shrugged off the damage that his actions had caused on both women, choosing to throw himself into work than be much of a father to either of his boys.
Colette threw herself into work, and soon Flint Manor grew cold. Any glimmer of love or affection that Decius and Colette shared was snubbed out, and Nathaniel was the only common link between the pair. His mother always tried with him, to be affectionate to show him a motherly care, but in the early years it was laced with guilt and sadness. From as long as Nathaniel was around, he always remembered his mother trying to escape his father's presence, and as a result Nathaniel too.
Stuck in the hayday of yesteryear, as Nathaniel grew, Decius thrust his own opinions beliefs and talents onto his son, including his Hogwarts notoriety, which included headboy and Captain of Slytherin Quidditch team. Taught by a governess, a strict one at that, Decius pushed Nathaniel to be the best. Nathaniel was never the best in his academics, but he learnt to push himself to hold himself in at least the lowest of his father's expectations. Luckily, sport was where his talents shone through.
At Hogwarts, Nathaniel joined the Slytherin Quidditch team as quickly as he could, determined to make fast friends with the people on his team and showcase his abilities in every match. There was one wizard in the league that Nathaniel avoided, his half-brother, Lucian. Although, Nathaniel would never admit it, seeing his brother in classes and matches throughout Hogwarts shook him to the core. Everybody knew their situation, the two Flint boys, the heir and the spare, but sometimes Nathaniel didn't know what category he fell under.
A popular party boy, Nathaniel hid behind any insecurity of his brother's existence by being loud, spouting nasty comments when the opportunity arose and shoving past the other lad in the corridor. It was what his father would have wanted, wasn't it? Perhaps in another life, they could have been great brothers, but as Nathaniel was receiving howlers from his father for missing a quaffle, he couldn't help but look at Lucian with venom. Lucian seemed to be downtrodden about not growing up with his father, while Nathaniel longed for a single day without thinking of his father's snarky statements or intense expectations.
Graduating from Hogwarts, Nathaniel moved from one Quidditch changing room to another. Signed by Puddlemere United at the age of nineteen, Nathaniel thought this might have resulted in a glimmer of pride from his father, but instead jealousy rose. His father, insistent that he also could have gone professional if it wasn't for family expectations. Family expectations that Nathaniel also had to fulfill.
Five years later, the noise has not yet gotten any quieter, but only shifted into different areas of his life. Almost everyday his father is sending him new teams to sign for, setting up blind dates with perspective suitors, and pushing him towards the Dark Lord.
Overwhelmed, Nathaniel has been acting out, both on the pitch and in his daily life. If this is what being the heir feels like, he would much rather be the spare.
