Headcannon request: who would confess first: Natsu or Lucy? And how would they react? What would be the guild's reaction?
Ahhh, NaLu! One of my favorite Fairy Tail ships. Actually, who am I kidding? All ships are my favorite. I have a lotta love for love TT.TT This one is interesting because I’ve written stories where Natsu confesses and stories where Lucy confesses... I gotta actually think about who would realistically confess first XD
NaLu Confession Headcanons
There are few things on this Earth that give me such great joy than the obvious love between Lucy and Natsu. Called whatever kind of love you like, but their relationship and interactions illustrate such a deep, meaningful, tender, unconditional, powerful love that it’s downright magical. I’m gonna cry, OMG TT.TT Anyway!
Like I’ve said, I’ve written it both ways, but in actuality, I feel like Lucy would be the first to confess! Here’s why and how it goes:
Natsu is a foil to Gray, in my opinion, when it comes to romance. Gray avoids romance because he feels like he is not worthy of love and has spent the time bettering himself because, in reality, I think he’s been afraid of love and commitment. Natsu is not afraid of these things; he openly seeks these deep connections and celebrates them.
So, why doesn’t he confess to Lucy? He’s a dumbass. LOL, just kidding. I actually think it’s almost like the love that existed between Naruto and Hinata in The Last: Natsu is aware of his feelings, but he has trouble articulating them. For him, there’s no clear division between platonic and romantic feelings; he just loves Lucy and that’s all he knows.
Levy is actually the one who convinces Lucy to break down and confess. Levy’s infallible logic and psychological analysis of Natsu’s complete unwillingness and need are just too powerful to refute! Truthfully, Lucy needed that push from Levy. Lucy was uncomfortably content with just waiting for Natsu to figure it out, and she just needed someone to tell her to take the lead.
Lucy stews on the confession for a while, trying to find the perfect opportunity, the perfect words. She drafts letters to read to him but end up throwing them away because none of them sound right. She grows increasingly frustrated and finally gets to the point where she can’t be around Natsu without thinking about her feelings.
Most people would avoid the person they’re in love with, but it’s hard to do that for multiple reasons; one, Natsu is stuck to Lucy like glue, and two, his personality is just so soft and welcoming that Lucy just can’t bear to segregate herself from him. So, Lucy’s confession is spontaneous, one of the random moments when they’re alone and just can’t bear to contain her feelings anymore.
There’s no fanfare or drama; staring into his eyes while hers flood with tears, holding her hand to her chest with her fingers digging into her shirt fabric because she feels like her heart is going to burst, nervous and excited and afraid all at once, she whispers, “Natsu, I love you.”
Natsu gapes at her slack-jawed. He looks like he’s going to play it off for a moment, hands going all over the place to rest on his hips and then cross his arms and run through his hair in a matter of seconds. His gaze drops to his feet as his lips purse, and it’s clear he’s struggling to articulate the deep depth of his feeling for Lucy.
So Lucy goes further into detail, explaining just what her love for him entails- how she wants to spend her life with him, how her heart sings when she’s near him, how she loves him so much it hurts. Finally, it clicks in Natsu’s head and he jumps forward to grab both her hands, eyes sparkling as his emerald eyes bore excitedly into hers.
“That’s it! That’s exactly how I feel about you, Lucy! I want to be together forever!” It’s almost child-like, his rapt joy, and it makes Lucy chuckle. Natsu slides into his soft, affectionate mode and pressed his forehead to hers to say more solemnly, “I’ll love and protect you, no matter what.” What girl’s heart wouldn’t thump with such honest and just barely sultry words?
The two share their first- and certainly not their last- romantic kiss.
Because the two were so at ease with each other before, totally comfortable with a lot of physical affection and constantly being around one another, only the occasional kisses Natsu plants on Lucy clues the guild in that it finally happened.
The guild had possessed a betting pool forever, so they’re overjoyed (or dismayed, if they bet wrong) that it’s finally paying dividends. Levy makes out like a bandit because she totally goaded the guild members who didn’t care at first into betting against her. She always had faith in the two of them. Ironically, Gray betted for the prospective couple as well, because “It was so obvious it made [him] nauseous.”
The old man cries a little because he’s secretly soft for young love. He gets angry when Mirajane starts teasing him about it.
Basically, the next day when Natsu greets Lucy with a happy little kiss, chaos ensues in the guild as the two sides are made painfully clear. Natsu tries to beat up everyone who bet against them and Lucy is just overwhelmed and asks Mirajane for a strong drink, though it isn’t even noon yet. Mirajane knows drunk Lucy so she gives her a placebo, just to be mischievous.
But really, the two are so happy their guild is excited about their blooming relationship!
