Box turtle is unique because its hinged lower shell can close tightly like a box, protecting its head and legs from predators.

It is found mainly in eastern North America, especially forests, grasslands, and moist woodland edges. There is no reliable exact number of box turtles left in the wild, but the Eastern box turtle is listed as Vulnerable with a decreasing population.

It survives by eating many foods like insects, worms, mushrooms, fruits, and plants, and some can live over 100 years in rare cases.
