He doesn’t laugh. Maybe it’s because he’s just gotten used to her scars now, like he’s gotten used to life without a couple of his fingers. Mike’s not feeling mushy enough to remind her of the fact that she’s still pretty damn gorgeous, even if she is scarred to all hell, and instead just keeps on eating.
He’s so very thankful when she goes back to talking about the muffins, though. He hates talking about what happened, and tries to avoid doing so at all costs. It makes him feel like he’s lost his mind, even just thinking about it briefly. There’s no way any of it happened. They just–
“Y’know, I’m starting to realize there’s a total lack of modesty in this relationship,” he chuckles, finishing off the muffin and seriously considering grabbing a second. However nice they are, he gets the feeling that might be a little too much.
“Depends,” he says, and he’s got that look going on. You know, the one that says brace yourself, I’m about to say something completely and utterly cringeworthy. Jess should just know to avoid saying certain things by now. Seriously, it’d save them all a lot of pain. “Is your cute ass on the list, or am I only allowed coffee?”
‘ What? Are you shocked? Screw modesty. Modesty’s for boring people. ’
She’s never really known it, anyway; took notes to ignore such a thing from her older sister. And around Mike, Jessica’s at ease enough to fall into their old routines ------ ego CLASHING against ego, she supposes. It’s home to her now. Hence her next reply; she’s good at playing along sometimes. Their games ( and Mike’s cheesy lines ) act as fantastic distractions.
‘ Oh, babe, my ass is ALWAYS on the list. Can’t believe you forgot that, oh my god. But still ------ coffee first. Coffee, then my ass. Deal? ’
All of this is said over her shoulder, as she’s pottering around in cupboard and flicking the switch on the kettle. She sways her hips, actively drawing his attention DOWNWARD, before cruelly turning and resting against the counter. Arms fold across her chest, and she stands tall, playful lights dancing in her eyes as she bats her lashes.
‘ Think you got the patience, good sir? ’
