“Why do you do that?” His brows furrowed, “Why do you push everyone that loves you away?” She gave him a hallow smile, parted her pretty lips, and wept. Wept, for the years she’d waited for someone to just simply ask.
It was good the other took time to consider his reply. Prince couldn’t stand quick remarks. “You are suggesting you are my equal..” he restated. The male watched the other for a moment, just wondering how he came to that conclusion. “Your reactions could be mimicked by any other person, don’t you think?” Therefore, how could they be equals. Prince was not someone who could be mimicked.
Granted, Noah probably should’ve seen that coming. A flush of nerves creeps up on his neck and he’s quickly ducking his head, hoping Prince doesn’t notice. “You ever read Animal Farm? It’s kind of like that. All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others. Except less dictatorship-y.” When he’s finally picked his pride up from the floor where Prince put it, his eyes skirt across the other’s, landing on something past him entirely. “Touché. Wouldn’t be the same, though, I reckon.”
psychwxrd.
“Just who do you believe is in control at the moment? It would be pitiful to assume it was yourself.” He was calm, naturally. There was no need to make a fuss, waste of energy. Especially on someone who mattered the same amount as an ant.
Noah considers his answer, jaw tense as he takes in the sight in front of him. If Prince wants to be calm, then he’ll mirror him. Somewhat. “I don’t quite agree.” It’s a safe enough answer, he supposes. “I like to think there’s an equal balance of power. Without my reactions this would be awfully boring, don’t you think?”
kai.
it isn’t right that he gets to see through him ; it isn’t right that kai has to stand here, feeling ripped open, like the smirk just curving off the corner of his mouth is a shield. he hears him as if through the haze of a dream, and yet, there is a part of him – a part that’s bordering on more dominant than that which the rest of him can hope to control – that hears him more clearly than he’s ever heard anything before. surely it’s more than he hears her, or more than he even hears himself. fhaari is someone who attracted him for a reason, after all, and maybe his clarity, maybe the fact that he can admit he pretends in the same sentence he accuses kai of the same, is why. at least in part.
the distance between them has expanded into a gaping hole, and continues to get wider the longer they go without touching. kai can’t explain this incessant, perpetual need he has to have his hands on someone warm, but if he had to guess, he’d say it’s because he missed being warm himself. he only pretends when it comes to things that matter, but even then, he used to be so open. he was always so open before the world taught him to be different.
hide your feelings. hide your face. hide your whole self, because you will not survive if you don’t.
“i could bring them to life now, if you gave me the right lines.” he tells him after a tick or two of silence, and suddenly pale blue eyes are cutting a path through the darkness, half his face shadowed from the illumination of the city. he’s looking at him, not necessarily appraising him, but certainly appreciating him. it’s difficult not to with a face like that, and kai thinks back to the first time he smiled at him because he wanted to. it was one of the only genuine smiles he had left inside of him, and the rest he continues to ration for whenever he’s around. for whenever they’re worth giving.
he is bare naked, but fhaari has clothed himself in a barrier. it puts him at the advantage, so far as kai can understand, but he can’t find it in himself to remember how these games are played. maybe he just doesn’t want to play them with him, is the thing ; maybe he wants to save the subtleties that he’s been taught from his mother’s chest, his father’s eyes, and every person he’s spoken to since entering this world of camera flashes and tabloids, for when he has to use them. now is not one of those times, because he makes himself raw for him in ways that he doesn’t for anybody else. perhaps not enough, but certainly more.
kai’s stance shifts a bit, weight redistributing from his right to his left, and when he reaches out, it’s to press his hand to the side of his neck. he slides it back, a slow procession, until he’s cupping over his nape, and when he moves, it’s to get a bit closer. there goes the chasm. “do i pretend with you?”
as if on cue, fhaari freezes beneath the gaze of his companion. his muscles tense, fingertips digging into soft flesh, as he suddenly becomes much too aware of his position in the darkness of the room. his walls have already come back up, and he hates that. he hates being under the scrutiny of those blue eyes unclouded by a former flash of lust. he hates knowing that kai can see the way his skin wraps far too taut around his bones and the way his tattoos are scattered like dust on the expanse of his skin. stubbornly, he does not look back. not yet.
white-hot flames lick beneath the surface of where kai touches him, and he can’t help the way his heart flashes across his face the second their eyes meet. he’s like art personified, really, and no matter how many fires, or stars, or galaxies fhaari compares him to in his literature, he knows none of his inflated purple prose will ever do kai justice. there are no words in any language that could even remotely describe who this person is, but fhaari’ll try. he’ll scrap, and he’ll cut, and he’ll draft about a million words from here til then, but eventually he’ll find them. he will.
it’s instinctual when fhaari leans into his touch, a hand coming to rest on his hip. a quick glance downwards reveals that fhaari’s seemingly overdressed for the occasion, and the pinch of pink on the apples of his cheeks shows his recognition. it’s too late now, though, and he only hopes kai won’t notice when his palm begins to dampen.
“ignorance is always bliss.”
fhaari doesn’t want to know if it’s fake, or if he’s capable of making kai feel anything other than lust and perhaps a sense of contentedness. either way fhaari doesn’t win, and he’s never particularly liked being the loser of his own story anyway. he knows his place as the forbidden fruit, or the side-chick as people call it nowadays, and it isn’t wise for him to assume anything more. it isn’t wise for him to think too deeply about all the little conversations they have, or the way they pretend to sleep afterwards. it isn’t wise to feed the feeling that grows in his chest every time they meet like this, and it isn’t wise that fhaari finds himself wishing he was brave enough to ask if he can stay.
but fhaari’s never been a wise man. if he was he wouldn’t be here, languidly closing the distance between them while actively swallowing down the fact that it feels a lot like subjugation.
“you have the whole entire world to fool when the sun comes up - i don’t think you’d intentionally add me to that list. or at least i hope not.” and he thinks he’s finished, but before he can even blink, more words are tumbling from his mouth, settling in the silence surrounding them. “there are things that we hide and things we don’t talk about, but i don’t think that’s entirely pretending. it feels more like — like preservation to me.”
maybe, just MAYBE dylan thinks he might be overreacting. being thrown into fhaari’s world was like a culture shock to him, he definitely didn’t know what he was getting into when he agreed to attend the event even though his boyfriend had tried his hardest to prepare him. the words spewing out of fhaari’s mouth eased his mind slightly, he knew he was being irrational but he couldn’t shake the feeling that this could possibly be how the rest of his life would be. the fancy parties with self absorbed people and painfully fake smiles, he COULDN’T handle a whole lifetime of it. no matter how much he wanted to be with the other, “ i…i get it.” he pulled his hands out of fhaari’s grasp, stumbling back and few steps as he began to realize his boyfriend wasn’t the problem, HE was.·“ i can’t do this. i don’t ·b e l o n g ·here. this is your life, this is always going to be your life. and i…i don’t think i fit in it. look at me, i can’t even fake it. i still look out of place.” he couldn’t even keep his gaze fixed on the other as he spoke, he bowed his head in fear of how the other would respond.·
fhaari doesn’t quite know what to do. it feels like he’s drowning, and he never was a good swimmer. “ i don’t ... get what you mean, babe. are you — you’re not — what are you saying?? ” he can’t say those words, can’t bear to even think them, so instead he opts for taking a step towards the man he hopes is still his lover. “ you belong right next to me, dylan, i-i don’t know what you’re saying. you look fine, babe. you look great, you did great!! ” it feels like he’s grasping at straws then, and he has to remind himself in the midst of his panic to just BREATHE. hands clench into fists in order to restrain himself from reaching out again, and it’s a long moment on his part before he speaks again. “ PLEASE don’t do what i think you’re doing. not here. ”
Going through withdrawal was hard, very hard and made the male sick to his stomach. Damon was sweating and not from the heat radiating through the apartment. Withdrawal was rough and something he hated going through as he had been through it before. The raven haired boy was shaking in his position on the couch watching the other worry as he remained weak and sickly. It was another day of heaving up whatever he had left in his symstem and feeling like death. He craved more, he felt as if he needed but he knew it was wrong. Damon felt sick and had no other solution to his issues. He had no other choice but to suck it up and deal with it. No matter how long he’d heard the arguement of ‘hospitals’ he refused knowing damn well they’d lock him in a rehab or jail. Looking to the other with teary eyes he clasped the blanket around him tight before speaking up. “I-I can’t do this,” He stated his hands shaking lightly feeling as if his head was pounding. “Please..”
Noah is presumably much too familiar with the act of watching those he holds dear suffer at the hands of addiction. His mother was the very first one. It wasn’t till he was twelve that he’d finally put the pieces together, and realized that when mommy said she was going “on vacation” what she really meant was rehab. When they were fifteen they had to move states, choosing to relocate both for his mother’s “rebirth” and for the promotion his father had received. Noah, although a firm believer in the strength of the human spirit, knows they can’t quite manage to do the same right now. So he’ll hover over Damon, always offering to help him and distract him in whatever way he can. He knows he can get through it, and the brunet would gladly break his back trying to support them both throughout it. “Hey, don’t — don’t say that, yeah?” He quickly moves from where he’d been cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by not-so-organized piles of papers, to lean against the spot where Damon sits. Ink splotched hands rest on the other’s knees, worry so obviously etched into the lines of his face. “You can and you are. It’ll be okay. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, but it will be.”
hoLY SHIT
kai.
it’s late. late enough that the only illumination is that which floods in from the city, floor to ceiling windows perfect gateways for the thousands of sparkling lights. he fancies they could be stars, sometimes, when he’s feeling as whimsical as he used to be; when he’s not being crushed beneath the burden of his own decisions, and the bed that he’s made for himself to lie in.
he’s naked, the sheet that had gotten caught about his waist when he’d moved to leave the bed left somewhere near the middle of the distance between here and there. he stands facing the world outside, and he doesn’t hear the sound of his lover’s breathing from this far away, which is well enough for him considering it’s what he needed to get away from. inhale. exhale. inhale. exhale. an endless, unsteady cycle that had made him feeling he was suffocating.
he tries not to think about his girlfriend when he turns his head, looking back at them from over a freckled shoulder. auburn hair is in a disarray from sleep, but it’s only been an hour since one, and they haven’t been sleeping long. or at least, they haven’t been pretending to be asleep for long. he can always tell when they do, he just never makes it apparent, because what’s the point? he flies them out to see him. they fuck. they pretend to get some rest. he lets them leave the next morning.
history repeats itself.
it’s always at night, because he has people watching him. he has the attention of the world, and as much as he’d thought that was what he wanted when he was chasing after it, he isn’t so sure anymore. he isn’t so sure about anything in his life that he’s chosen.
he wants someone to tell him he’s as awful as he feels.
fhaari doesn’t often like to portray himself as a cliche; he thinks it’s far too overdramatic and limiting, but he can’t help it if he really is one. shakespeare’s as you like it once compared the world to a stage and the humans to players who shuffle from role to role to role. all his life he’s heard his professors tell him that shakespeare’s much too overrated, too bland, but it’s when he’s shifting from his role as the golden son, to the poet, to the lover’s vice, that he feels he’s found his fit in shakespeare’s stage. like maybe, just maybe, the guy wasn’t so full of shit after all.
the bed is half-empty and no matter how hard he tries to think of anything but the fire in his loins, it’s been consuming him for as long as he;s laid there. which tends to be the issue with kai, too, isn’t it? it’s always so much when it comes to him. the raven-haired boy is like a sponge, constantly soaking up the fluidity of the other’s emotions, letting them seep into his bones for when they ultimately part ways once again. he likes to think that with each time they do this, kai gives fhaari just a little bit more of himself. the way his heart is left to ache should tell him otherwise, but when has fhaari ever not bled for someone?
it’s a long moment before he gives up hope on ever falling asleep that night. if it’s not too cold, then it’s too spacious, and if it’s not that, well, it’s because kai isn’t there, which feels just as pathetic as it sounds, really.
inked hands roam the barren sheets for something to cover himself with, and the first thing he finds is what he puts on. his knees wobble when he puts his full weight on them, and quietly he pads to where kai stands, deciding last minute to keep his hands to himself this time. his anxiety forever holds him back, and the night feels much too fragile to wound with his gawkiness. thin arms wrap around himself, and fhaari ignores the way the air conditioning nips at his bare skin.
“you know, sometimes i think you should’ve been an actor instead.” he’s careful not to break the serenity of the moment, voice soft as it always is. the view from there is breathtaking, and fhaari can’t ignore the way an inkling of envy drops to the pit of his stomach because of it. aside from the sex and promiscuity of it all, it’s the luxuries that come with these rendezvouses that make it worth it. he’ll always be envious of all the glamor, all the endless glory, that kai receives. the lights are beautiful compared to what fhaari’s used to, and part of him wonders if his almost lover thinks the same thing.
“i could’ve written the plays. watched you bring them to life afterwards. you pretend more than i do — i’ve seen it.”
“dunno,” he shrugged towards the persons concern. elton, for one, wasn’t shy about much. perhaps his absolute personal life - but blame that on fame. “something about you - “ he shook his head with a long, drawn pause, thinking about all the things he could mention in just the few times meeting the other that he liked. enjoyed. not something he did with just anyone. elton knew the good and the bad people in the world in just the first few moments of knowing them. and trust him, he WOULDN’T stick around if he didn’t enjoy them in some way. “ - just something about you.”
fhaari can only smile at the other, head ducking slightly as a certain warmth runs up his neck to color his cheeks a light shade of pink. “that’s SUCH a corny cop-out, yeah?” he keeps his voice soft, loud enough only so it can be heard by elton’s ears, and as inoffensive as he can possibly muster. “where do you feel it then? whatever it is about me.”
‘ FUCK off.’ dylan’s tone is v e n o m o u s and harsh, storming out of the charity event he was forced to go to by his significant other. ‘ you said you weren’t one of those people that cared about money and looks and all that fancy shit. but obviously you DO. i didn’t even know who you were in there!! i’ll never be the guy you want, i can’t be one of THEM. ’ he shook his head, a million different thoughts whirling through his mind, ‘ fuckin’ tie.’ he swore in frustration, pulling at his collar feeling like he couldn’t breathe. he knew this was a bad idea, coming here and seeing the other in their natural habitat. he didn’t belong here, he n e v e r would. he’d always just be the poor boy that spent his days couch surfing (because he certainly wouldn’t stay with his abusive father) and avoiding being sober.
fhaari is thrown off by the hostility radiating from dylan in waves, left stock-still for a moment as his brain tries to catch up with what feels like a tumbling house around them. “ baby, please listen to me, just — ” his cheeks heat up in what he assumes is shame, and the raven-haired boy is quick to look around, eyes scanning to see if anyone’s heard them yet. “ you’re overreacting, okay?? i’m sorry, i am, but i’m NOT like them!! you know that, okay, just — fuck. ” having caught sight of the struggle before him, fhaari only reaches for dylan’s hands, hoping it offers s o m e reassurance aside from the pleading in his eyes. “ I’M SORRY. you know i am, but you also know i have to play along with their little game, even if it makes me look like a total fuckass. if i didn’t like you, i wouldn’t have brought you here. if you weren’t what i wanted then i wouldn’t be here trying to fucking reason with you either, babe. do you get that?? ”
affronted by the reaction he received, his posture stiffens and his eyebrows pull together enough to toughen his expression. abel had only pulled himself out of bed out of the goodness of his heart, anyhow — or at least that’s what he tells himself. it’s not because he was a particularly nosy brat this evening and wanted to know why he didn’t almost miss the beep of his microwave going off, like he usually did, because of the incessant giggling he swore drilled holes through their shared apartment wall. it wasn’t like he cared though. abel hardly spoke five honest sentences towards his neighbor; excluding every instance his half asleep fists pounded on his front door to mutter how one day he was going to be driven to insanity because of all the bustling the other boy got up to. speaking of which, abel finally pulled himself out of his head to glance over felix. it takes a lot more energy than abel would care to admit to keep from commenting on his rumpled demeanor, but another question ends up filling the air between them before abel has the chance to reconsider. “what the hell happened to you?” it would be a wasted breath to try making the situation appear as anything other than what it was. curiosity killed the cat, right?
felix remains frozen, crystal blue eyes locked on the other as the fiery fury he’d been feeling just a few moments ago quickly freezes over into something that feels a lot like incertitude. his first instinct is to take it at face value and assume his neighbor has come all this way to just take a jab at his appearance — but no, because that wouldn’t make much sense with the extra shifts he’d picked up at the bar, he’s been coming and leaving at some pretty obscure hours. it’s only after a moment of deafeningly loud silence that it finally hits him. oh. he means — no, that wouldn’t — it’s just — what? felix swallows, expression coming to mirror the other male’s almost exactly as he tries to conjure some kind of answer. no one ever asks felix how he feels. that’s just, well, it’s just not a thing that happens. “i-i don’t .. uh, i don’t under— what do you mean what happened to me?” felix quickly considers slamming the door right then and there as the familiar feeling of dread settles in his stomach, and his brain can only think of the worst of it all — like the sounds his raven-haired guest must’ve heard when felix begged his partner to stay, or how they’d struggled against the door when felix thought if maybe he stood in front of it that’d be enough reason for him to stay. or maybe he’d heard the way he tortured himself with sad music for three days, and turned the tv up in hopes that it’d drown out his pathetic cries. shame fills him to the brim where he stands, and the blond has to look away. “i don’t know what you’re talking about, man.”

elias frowns in response. was it really that BIG of a problem that he cared so much? he was only looking out for his friend. charlie had him so worried that·something might have happened that he went out looking for the other. it wasn’t the first time the raven had did so, and he didn’t find in fault in doing it again. that didn’t mean he didn’t trust charlie; he did – there wasn’t a reason not to. although sometimes he doubted that everything wasn’t as alright as he is being told. ❝ and what reason is it that? is some thing wrong? i can’t trust you if you don’t tell me anything. ❞
❝ i do tell you things, elias. i tell you practically everything. i was just — ❞ and this is his downfall, his achilles heel, because charlie doesn’t know how to lie. he’d grown up in an honorable home where lying was treated as the worst possible sin, and, well, charlie never really did anything so bad he’d needed to lie about it anyway. so he stutters, hands shoving into the front pockets of his jeans as he avoids the other’s gaze. ❝ y’know, i was with someone. aunt su wants to redo her guest room, and i-i was helping, and ... yeah. ❞
gothicxhorror.
“no baby, no,” he whispers and leans over to wrap the male in his arms. his body presses close to fhaari and presses his lips to his. “it’s okay, i love you, so so much, can’t imagine being with anyone else. you’re all i’ve really wanted since the day i met you. i know things have been rough but, we can fix that. i’ll take a break from work or something. i just want you to know that i love you, don’t you dare doubt that.” he brushes his fingers along his skin and whispers, “you’re mine and im yours, i promise.”
he showcases a watery smile as he listens to troy’s words, pink hues coloring his cheeks at the intimacy of it all. “you’re a bit cheesy, aren’t you?” fhaari giggles then, reveling in the way the nerves from just a moment ago were slowly, but surely, dissipating from his bones. the tightness in his chest remains, but when he hooks his leg over troy’s thighs, the added closeness makes it tolerable. “you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. you love me and you try, that’s more than enough for me, yeah? i just miss you, i guess. i dunno, it’s like — i know you’re here and all, but.. i feel like i could be doing more. with you. which probably sounds weird.” goosebumps rise where the brunet’s skin touches his own, and fhaari finds it a little funny how even after all this time, it still feels like their first.
wcyward.
based on this.
abel was used to the walls of his shabby apartment trembling with the booming music, hard enough that he almost had the mind to double check on his kitchen cabinets to make sure they were still in tact. most nights consisted of him scowling at his bedroom wall — as if that would somehow teach his neighbor something about common courtesy. this week, though, he barely spared the door a foot away from his a fleeting glance before entering his own apartment. there hadn’t been the usual hum of laughter, not even a creak of the floorboards. which was strange, all things considered. he was hardly the type to willingly dive into anyone’s business, but abel couldn’t think to stop himself as he pattered out of his apartment and towards the adjacent one. his left hand balled into a loose fist, knuckles thumping against the wood until they started to numb.
felix does not handle change very well, if at all. it’s like his brain can’t grasp the fact that feelings are fickle, that hardly anything in this world is actually permanent, and promises are rarely ever kept. that’s why he’s been in this rut ever since tuesday september twenty-ninth — because felix always writes down the time and dates of important events — and hasn’t come up since. he’s been restless, drowning in the silence of his apartment as he obsesses over a folder of documents on his macbook he calls his first bestseller. it’s easier, he thinks, to delve into the lives of people in fictional worlds than it is to deal with the fact that he doesn’t know how to let go. he’s about seven hundred and three words into chapter eight when there’s a knock at the door, and his first instinct is to just ignore it. he never had any visitors, well, except for one — his raven-haired neighbor. but the few knocks become incessant, and he can’t think up a phrase without a rapping at the door to rudely interrupt him. exhaling a shaky breath, felix decides to get up from underneath the blankets of his bed, wondering why it is god refuses to just leave him be. the door swings open, and felix — who is dressed in sweats and messy hair that he hasn’t washed in days — probably comes off just as mad as he looks. “can you not do that? there’s no music, okay? there’s no noise. there’s literally nothing for you to complain about today, so just stop that.”
