With the opening of Metro PCS today, the Pete's Fresh Market Strip Mall is now completely occupied! With the main attraction, Pete's Fresh Market, the Strip Mall now has a Chase, Subway, Magic Nail Spa, King Wok, Crisp -N-Clean Cleaners, Metro PCS, Studio 27 Beauty Supply, and Dominos.

The day we have all been waiting for has finally arrived. A few elected officials were in attendance for the ribbon cutting: Ald. Fioretti, Ald. Burke, Ald. Burnett & Mayor Emanuel. Took a little tour around the store, which has your standard produce, deli, dairy, frozen foods, and seafood. But it also has some great ready to eat options such as the smokehouse, paninis, grill, taqueria, gelato, juice bar, salad bar, pizza, Lotus cafe, and prepared meals. Great to see all the people in the community lined up eager to explore the fresh food options within walking distance.

As the Grand Opening of Pete's Fresh Market is around the corner, this blog post is a great perspective on the positive and potentially negative impacts of alleviating the food desert in the Near West Side / East Garfield Part Area. Living in this area for a few years, I have experienced first hand the rise in property/rent going up very quickly in this fast growing area. It's great to see the growth of my community by eliminating a food desert, but there should still be a strong focus on providing the necessary resources to help the community with centers to provide adults and children with the best opportunity to thrive in this economy.
