Selling Slack
Recently I was asked to provide some advice based on my experience of introducing Slack to the Hikuwai Committee by a colleague on Twitter. Yay for Twitter fame! :-)
I had to think about what I had done, and why I had done it, and distil the key learnings. Then it occurred to me that I was missing a trick by not producing some written reflections. Hence this post.
When I joined Hikuwai I found that committee members had long discussions via email, (with attachments) which were hard to follow. Following the thread of a conversation meant that you had to check multiple emails to ensure you hadn't missed an important point, and people sometimes went off on a tangent, making new threads. Finding attachments could also be tricky.
So when the topic came up in a meeting I leapt at the chance of changing how the Committee communicated.
So why Slack? Well I could tell you that I made a systematic and scientific trawl of the available products on the market and selected the one that best fitted a pre-determined list of criteria carefully considered by the committee. That would be a lie. I chose Slack because I was already experimenting with it, and I knew roughly how it worked. It's also easier to evangelize when you like the product.
My challenge was to get a group of diverse people to change their habits from writing emails to chatting in an app. I will detail how I did this in my next blog post.

Hikuwai Weekend School Support
I provided mentoring and support to the people the Hikuwai Committee sponsored to go to the Hikuwai Weekend School. I also organized a post-conference de-brief.
Providing support to these library professionals gave me the opportunity to pass on some of the things I’ve learned about attending conferences:
Take notes, but take more notes from the talks that really interest you (taking notes can be rather tiring!).
Plug into social media, and take part in conversations online.
Think about what each talk means to you, personally in your day to day role.
Think about applications for your new learnings!
I was especially keen to organize a conference de-brief as I feel that the benefits of attending conferences can sometimes be lost for want of reflection, or maybe even a brief chat about the shared experience.
We had an informal conference de-brief in the Auckland Libraries staff lounge at the Central Library. There were two people present & I attempted to video conference with a third unsuccessfully with Appear.in. I used Periscope as a fall back option, so our third participant could at least see what we talked about.
I didn’t go to the conference, & I feel that it isn’t my place to talk about it. I would rather reflect on the satisfaction I got out of helping other people get the most of out of their conference experience. I feel that the support I provided gave everyone the chance to make the most of the time and money they spent on professional development.
