Ashford 32” table loom ready to go to its new owner.
Four coats of lacquer (5 on the levers.)
I’m really glad Ashford still has the assembly manual online. It was a huge help on identifying missing pieces. All missing pieces were available at our local Ace Hardware store -well, except for the missing lever.
So it’s a seven shaft loom until I find #8 somewhere. This is going to a beginning weaver, so they will be busy with enough other tasks to not be too vexed by a missing #8 lever.
The ringer assembly is original.
Cleaned the bells.
I want you guys to all start making a bigger stink about Tumblr's Age Verification Horseshit.
Like they tried to change Reblogs and people rightfully got up in arms, this is a LOT worse. In order to have access to any sort of thing dubbed mature, and We haveALL seen what they think is mature, Everything from a black and white photo of a black woman's arm, to posts about IUD recalls, to a nude painted by a 17th century artist, to anything involving the word Trans; you have to send your personal information to a third party site that WILL get hacked, and you will be doxxed. And they can say "Oh shit, well it wasn't us who sent your name address and gender identity to Moldovan teenagers, here's a couple extra minutes in the ball pit.
That's bad enough!!!!!!!! But the entire idea of needing permission from state authorities to access anything labeled mature by our friendly AI overlords is some fucking Boll shit. Die Gedenken Sind Frie baby. This is all a reaction to people getting uppity about their lowly lowly rights and is being propped up by the same bad actors tht have made life unlivable. Fuck that shit.
"Well it's only being rolled out in Brazil and UK" Yeah, to start. "Well they're being forced to do this by laws." YOu know it's always really funny when these tech giants (Or whatever you call owning tumblr dot com) get really antsy about laws considering they pick and choose which ones they abide by.
This is a breaking point and it's going to be very interesting to see how we proceed from here.
Wet sanded with 600, 1000, and 2500 grit sandpaper.
Still a lot of mottled appearance to it, May do another round.
Shocking how much tobacco sludge came off of it while sanding.
Handset and line cord fresh out of the washing machine.
I put them in a mesh bag and tossed them in with some flannel shirts.
I learned this trick on YouTube. sxsphil is the channel. Lots of good phone stuff there.
I have cleaned this Bakelite handset twice with Dawn detergent and water. It actually does look better than before. I may try a few more rounds to get rid of the brown film (smoker?), then move on to the plastic polish.
Handset dates
Speaker from 1959, microphone from 1961
Back in the day, you couldn’t own a phone, you rented it from the phone company.
But with that rental, you got installation and repairs. Thus the disparate dates.
Or it could have been built from parts in, or after, 1961 in the repair shop.
The dates match! 7/53.
Not surprising as the 425B Network is riveted to the baseplate.
More dates to be found.
I have just started cleaning. So far, the dial and the case.

Terry Jones statue was unveiled in Colwyn Bay today with Carol Cleveland, Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam in attendance
+
It has long been the practice of pilgrims to rub the feet or hands of the statues of saints.
But the daughter of Terry Jones has invited Monty Python fans to rub her father’s bum for good luck when they visit the Welsh town of Colwyn Bay.
A statue of Jones striking his nude organist pose, wearing a flapping tie and with wild hair, was unveiled at the town’s beachfront on Saturday.
The figure of the late comedian, by Llandudno sculptor Nick Elphick, has been funded by a worldwide campaign by Monty Python fans, which raised more than £120,000.
Sally Jones, Terry Jones’s daughter, echoed the sentiment before the statue’s unveiling, telling Radio 4’s Today programme that Colwyn Bay had always been close to her father’s heart, despite him having moved away at the age of five.
“People can come and sit down on the bench next to him. They can put their hands on the piano. They can see every element of the statue. And hopefully people will enjoy it and possibly rub his bum for luck,” she said.
There was a crowd of several thousand on the sand and promenade who had travelled from across Britain for the unveiling.
Palin said: “He was loyal, he was funny, he was bright, he was intelligent. He had so many virtues.”
Jones was born in Colwyn Bay before his family relocated. He maintained links with the north Wales town, becoming patron of Theatre Colwyn and supporting its renovation in 2011.
Jones performed in, co-wrote and directed two Monty Python films: The Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life.
He co-directed The Holy Grail with Gilliam and co-wrote the series Ripping Yarns with Palin, whom he had met at Oxford University.
Three other Python members – John Cleese, Eric Idle and Gilliam – supported the fundraising campaign for the statue, along with Emma Thompson, Steve Coogan and Suzy Eddie Izzard.
Jones died in 2020 at the age of 77, from a rare form of dementia and his family hope the statue will bring some comfort to others who have lost loved ones to the condition.
“It’s so difficult when someone suffers from dementia and you lose them so slowly over a period of years,” said Ms Jones. “They disappear in front of you, so being able to really properly celebrate his life and everything he did is just a real joy for us and it’s nice to be able to share that with everybody after what can be quite a sad few years at the end of somebody’s life.”
He added: “It was so important to me to get Terry’s smile right. I did 10 portraits playing with different expressions and I hope I have done him justice.
“I feel like I’m the luckiest sculptor ever, a little bit of being in the right place, at the right time, to bring Terry Jones back to north Wales.”
Dilwyn Price, the chairman of Conwy Arts Trust, said: “Conwy Arts Trust have been privileged to be partners in this exciting project to pay tribute to the acclaimed actor, author and historian, who never forgot his Welsh heritage and especially his Colwyn Bay and Old Colwyn roots. The inspirational statue will be a lasting testimony to Terry Jones and a reminder to everyone who sees the statue that we have not forgotten him.”

Barn repair
A long time coming. Our neighbors recommended a company. Probably shouldn’t have listened.
A few weeks ago they came out to look at the situation, then returned with the carpenter, then sent us a quote.
Lots of work to be done, with a price tag to match (60% down).
Carpenter got busy, so carpenter 2 came out and took a look. A week and a half later he returned (yesterday ),but had forgotten what needed to be done.
So he called the owner of the company and got the rundown.
But he did almost none of it (see X’s).
We called the company today, and the owner came out, and said it didn’t need all of that work that the carpenter didn’t do, as it wasn’t as bad as he had remembered.
So I’m looking forward to a much lower bill.
No scrap lumber to haul off, no temporary wall built, no rotted sections of rafters removed, no ledger board installed.
Fun times.
Current state of the Ashford 32” table loom.
Much easier to sand while it’s in pieces. And I realized one 1 inchscrew was missing on the heddle frame, but I found taking place of a 3/4” screw in another location. So I guess the original packaging had a screw loose. (I’ll see myself out).
A reed, new Texsolv cording, a stick shuttle, and assorted little bits were ordered today.
I’ll haunt the hardware emporium tomorrow to find a few items.
I’m having fun.
1953 Western Electric 500 with the Bakelite handset. The dial returns beautifully.
I’ll clean it up and use it.
Stay tuned for updates on the cleaning.
Ashford Table Loom 32 inch
A mutual friend has this loom, and another mutual friend is interested in it, but first friend wants me to look it over first.
I’m beginning to see why this design was abandoned.
32 inches is too much for these thin beams.
Heddle frames pop out of their channels and bind.
Too much flex in everything.
The rear pawl is a -30” inch reach to release tension to advance the warp. That’s a lot of getting up and reaching during a weaving session.
One lever is missing, so it’s a 7-shaft, not 8.
More concerning is how did a Texsolv cord break? And how did a lever separate from its baseplate?
Oh, and it’s in pieces because I noticed the heddle box was installed backwards, so the beater bar bumpers saw no action.
It’s an interesting beast, but I’d hate to weave with it.
I’m keeping the potential future owner updated.
The 317.
Fascinating. It has the cathedral top and the picture frame routing around the transmitter.
Note the grooves cut into the back. Tiny, uninsulated wires reside deep down in the grooves before going back into the cabinet.
In the cabinet you’ll notice the two batteries and the magneto. There are a lot of other things in there, including a network module, which may have been added later?
Notice the wires soldered onto the hinges to connect parts on the front panel. Innocent days.
The wiring diagram will be helpful.
And this thing is heavy. Still looking for a good spot to hang it.
What a great book!
Great info on WE 317 we have, too.
