âIâd say donât believe everything you hear, but whatever it was was probably true.â He wasnât bragging and didnât sound particularly proud of it - it just was what it was. His powers made him capable of doing extraordinary things for people. So he did them. Anything less than that wouldâve been selfish and beyond wasteful. Thatâs what he told himself every morning he woke up in a narrow bed one door away from the clinic floor, anyway.
He nodded as he heard the explanation. âSo you got lucky?â His touch was careful and he very gingerly touched the side of Larryâs face. Burns, fires, it brought backâŠa lot of memories. Ones he couldnât stand there and think about right then.
âI heard youâre a good guy and you donât keep records,â Larry said, shrugging once. âThatâs good enough for me.â He had heard more than that, but this was the relevant information by which Larry would be judging Josh. Larry had plenty of facets of himself he would prefer people didnât focus on, and he was going to extend that same courtesy to Josh. Larry knew what it was like to be an outcast, to look different and feel different, even before the burns and the bandages. It was infuriating.Â
Larry shrugged lightly. âIn a manner of speaking.â He wasnât sure if having some spirit residing inside of him was exactly lucky. He closed his eyes as Josh touched his face, not wanting to think too hard about it. It had been a long time since he had been touched.
