Potential new project in the works. and this time the doodles are in color!
A ceramic project I did during Covid. Probably the largest ceramic piece I’ve made and I’m honestly surprised that it held its structure.
A project that I shot the first month of Covid. It was to show how the various hours of the day could change the coloring of the area.
Putting up some pages for Doodle Me and there are some minor differences if you compare them to the physical comic. Eventually the full thing will be put on an online store for purchase. Right click to open the pic in a new tab in order to view it better.
Doodle Me Statement
Biography
NC Smith has lived in Fullerton for the majority of his life and started his art journey there. At a young age, he fell in love with comic books as it was one of the few activities he could do while his grandparents watched him. His love for art was fostered when his parents had him go to The Art House after school and were taught by the Raphael family the basics along with art history. In 2017 he took up photography as it was one of the few art mediums that he hadn’t explored and after one semester decided to make it his focus. As of 2022, he’s wrapping up his BFA in Photography while fusing his love of comics with it.
Artist Statement
Doodle Me started off as a passion that was built to challenge me. Before the early concept of making collage comics, I was content with setting up my camera in an open landscape with little to no human interaction since this would be one of my last projects as a student I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and shoot something I wouldn’t have done when I began my journey as a photographer. On top of it scheduling with multiple people different shoots and directing them to interact with something that would be added in post.
A lot of my comics draw from real life but with added exaggeration. While everyday life may seem mundane, there’s a lot of humor to it and lots of storytelling potential so that’s the main reason I draw from it. The added comic flair is sort of a love letter to childhood and what got me through the ups and downs of life To add focus and less clutter my character is simple in order to stand out in a photorealistic world. Using these two mediums I’ve combined two things I love and hopefully it would entertain the reader. Comics were my life when I was younger as they were one of the few activities that I could do when my grandparents watched me. While Photography was one of two mediums I settled into once I figured out what I wanted to do in life. So in order to honor these two art forms, I decided to combine the two.
The comic aspect of the project came after the initial idea. In the early stages, adding in a drawing of me was a way for me to add myself to a picture while at the same time being behind the camera. The simple design came about as a way to contrast the photo along with giving the focal point. After a few more early attempts involving speech bubble placement, the concept for Doodle Me fell into place.
Doodle Me is a look at the College and a home life while exaggerating it to humorous effects. The use of the comic allows for the piece to be portable and has something the viewer can take home with them after looking at the exhibit. As an added bonus there are easy recipes to help the average college student survive their schooling experience.

Narrative Bio
At a young age, NC Smith had a fascination with science and the arts. During his younger years, he studied entomology and attended The Art House of Fullerton after school, and was taught the basics of art and Art history by Cherene Raphael and her Family. His fascination with visual storytelling started when he was given a portion of his Uncles comic collection in order to distract him while he stayed at his grandparent’s house while his mother worked on her English Degree at Cal State Fullerton. Originally an Entomology Major, he switched to focusing on the arts after being told that there weren’t a lot of financial aid options for Bio Majors. His works focus on an escape from the real world while also giving the viewer notes on how to survive once they stop viewing his work.
