Do you ever have had a phaleonopsis keiki?
I have not, unfortunately :( But I've seen one on my friends' orchid that was going through a rough patch (I think it was trying to save itself). None of my plants have been in that bad of shape to need to send out a keiki.
Hello, I have a collection of about 21 orchids, I was wondering why my oncidiums have not rebloomed in about 2 years, I noticed the bulbs do go wrinkly and wondered is this dehydration? Should I be watering oncidiums more often? I've only had two successful phalanopsis reblooms but one only lasted a couple of weeks which made me sad. I'm just having no luck :( I love your blog, nice to see others who love orchids too :) xx
Well, what are your oncidiums planted in? Usually they prefer to stay slightly moist at all times, so I try to water before the bulbs start getting wrinkled (however, once they do wrinkle excessively, they will never fully "unwrinkle," no matter how much water you give them).
Do you use a fertilizer on your orchids?
Also, sometimes oncidiums need more light in order to rebloom, but I wouldn't recommend direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time. Phals need a significant drop in temperature for a 2-3 week period at night in order to start a bloom spike, so perhaps try setting the phals next to a cracked window as the fall weather starts to chill for a couple weeks and see if that helps (as long as it is staying above 40 degrees at night).
Does that help? Sorry to answer your questions with so many questions of my own! It's just easier to diagnose if I know all of the contributing factors.
Sorry the updates have been few and far between...
I've been graduating and moving and getting settled and job searching and such... slightly forgot all about Social Media Land for a bit.
Most of the orchids have some new leaf and root growth, which is normal for this time of year. Some of them are having a bit of a rough time acclimating to the humid-less desert that is my new house. I need to invest in a humidifier ASAP.
My biggest phal bloomed a few weeks ago. I've been lazy about taking photos. Only 3 flowers.... Kind of disappointing.

I've come to the conclusion that I do not think this phal will be saved through water culture. I'm moving in about a week, halfway across the country, and I think I'm going to just call it quits with this plant. It needs some emergency care to ever have the chance of recovering and I cannot be bothered with everything else I have to do to transport my plants. I feel guilty about giving up, but the chances of survival were already slim for this rescue and I've seen really no signs of recovery since I started this experiment a few months ago. That new leaf did come up, but I haven't seen any new root growths and I don't see this plant hanging on too much longer without any viable roots.... If I don't see improvement within a week, it's getting tossed. :(
Update on semi-hydro experiment: this is my mtssa shelob Tolkien oncidium. This is the most growth I've had out of any of the orchids I switched over... Although I haven't yet seen much of a negative impact. The jury is still out on this method and I think it will be probbaly a year at least until I fully realize the good or bad effect of this growing method.
This is my newest addition. I got it at the orchid showbin Indy a few weeks ago in spike. Paph Hsinying Ruby Web. Sorry I've been lazy about updating.... Finishing up grad school has been occupying every waking moment.

Indy Orchid Show
I just found out that there is an orchid show in Indianapolis this weekend! I can't even express how excited I am! I hope all the plants are outrageously expensive so I don't come back with 20 or so.
"April 13 and 14, 2013 (Saturday and Sunday) is Central Indiana Orchid Society's annual Orchid Show. It is held at Garfield Park Conservatory (garfieldgardensconservatory.org) in Indianapolis. Hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. both days. Admission is $3 (to Garfield Park Conservatory). This is an AOS judged show, with more than a dozen displays provided by growers from throughout the midwest. Vendors will have orchids and growing supplies for sale, as well as advice on selecting and growing orchids at home."

I'm no longer allowed to go to the grocery store alone, in control of my own money. I have an disease. But it was on sale for half price.... *crazy nervous laugh* This is the only one that looked any good. I will take better pictures later. It's not like in a month I'll be moving across the country and I have to fit all my plants in my coupe... Plenty of room, right? Also with two cats. Awesome. What have I done....
