Cupcake Jones (Portland, OR)

I don’t have many followers, so a signal boost would be wonderful.

You may have heard about a bakery called Sweet Cakes by Melissa. Last year, they were charged with discrimination by denying service based on sexual orientation when they refused to bake a cake for a lesbian wedding. Recently, a judge ordered them to pay $150,000 in restitution to the couple. Sweet cakes turned to GoFundMe to pay for the fine and legal fees.

So here’s where the shenanigans come in. In PDX, we have a wonderful and delicious cupcakery called Cupcake Jones. They are outspoken equality rights activists and the give back to many many organizations in the area. When they saw that Sweet Cakes had garnered over $100K in a few hours, they championed a push to report to GoFundMe (who doesn’t allow the raising of funds to pay criminal fines anyway, regardless of the hate speech). It was successful.

This morning they are being barraged with people asking them to make hate cakes (spoiler: they can’t, they make cupcakes) and basically harassing the people at the shop.

So if you can, stop and visit them today. Get a mini cupcake (or a full size, filled one). If you aren’t in the area, maybe get a gift certificate from them online (http:\cupcakejones.net).

Portions of this months profits go to CHAP (Children’s healing art project), in case you’re wondering, and yes they have gf/df (or just gf if you want regular frosting) chocolate, vanilla, and red velvet cupcakes as well as an assortment of delicious other cupcakes.
