Short Story Review: Harrison Bergeron
Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut is one amazing short story, and I highly suggest taking ten minutes out of your day to sit down and enjoy it. The story takes place in the year 2081, in a society where everyone is equal. If you were above average you would be given a handicap, such as a bag of weights that you have to wear on your chest or arms to weigh you down. Another example is an earpiece that makes annoying noises, causing you to never be able to think hard about something.
The story focuses on a husband and a wife, AKA Hazel and George, and their son, Harrison, who had been taken away because of his high intelligence, and thrown in jail. One day though, while Hazel and George were watching television, they are notified that Harrison had escaped jail, and is on the loose.
Harrison Bergeron is a great example of how our society today works, and that is shown through the characters personalities and actions, and the events that are thrown their way during the story. By looking deeper into the story you can also find some dark humor, that I myself found very amusing. Another great thing about this story is that it is easy to follow, but still leaves you questioning at the end.
I recommend this story for middle school and up, because I feel like anyone younger will not be able to appreciate Harrison Bergeron to its full extent. I hope you do read it and enjoy it!
