For the 5th assignment, [Re]Creation of the Self, we were asked to design a model, which was suppose to be an object but also something that has spatial organization. And this object is supposed to be something for 1/20 scaled humans to sit, lie, run, climb, etc in it. Either humans and/or the object supposed to change its usual form according to the project. The humans were 9 cm and my design has 15 cm height and 40 cm width and depth. Humans are able to lie down, sit and stand in it. I made my design with 2 mm-thick cupboard and I used the intersections of 3 different elements. I experienced folding and also the repetition of these elements in my assignment. It is important to experience new techniques because our next assignment will be about 4 different techniques which are layering/sectioning, tessellation/folding, modulation/repetition and aggregation/stacking.
Addition of all works. It looks very nice because of the combination of different colours. I really like it.
Structure Experiments and The First Jury: Pavillion
So, for the next assignment, we started to learn structural forces. We had a guest instructor, Özer Hoca, for this assignment and first we learn the basic forces which are tension, compression, torsion, shear and bend. After the lecture we did a lot of experiments by using materials such as styrofoam, fishing wire, etc. to test and see the results of this forces.
After that lecture we started to work with membrane structures for our first jury’s requirement: a pavillion. By using elastic materials like socks and such, we started to create structures with membranes. Membranes created the tension forces and we tried to create compression forces to balance the whole system by using wooden sticks and such. But of course, first of all this is an architecture class, so we had to create spaces and spatial continuty as well. We were required to create 3 kind of space: a workshop area, an indoor and an outdoor exhibition area. We also used a scale and this was our first project that we used human body. Working with human body and proportions was a though challenge but I hope we’ll get used to it.
Anyway, we made our models with a balanced structure, which have a spatial organization and suitable for human scale and perform our projects to jury. Mine was rather short and I got a CB but I hope to get better results for my other two juries in the future. But for now, I believe that I solve most of my problems with structure (though I still should keep working on it), so I should focus on human body, proportions and of course like always as an architecture I should focus on my spatial organization.
In this assignment, we used the information that we learned from the previous assignment and then we made a box which we can both define voids, their relationships and observe light, shade and shadow configurations on different surfaces. In my project, I used green (medium) corrugated cardboard, light green cardboard, dark green cardboard and white perforated fabric. I followed a certain rule for covering and after that I used my light source for the observations. The results were interesting and I saw different possibilities of shadows and shades.
LIGHT EXPERIMENT
In the first week of the second semester, we started our new lecture, Introduction to Architectural Design, with a light, color and texture experiment. We made a box out of cupboard and put a hole on the short surface of the box. Also the top of the box was shorter than its bottom surface. We directed our light source from the top and what the inside of the box from the hole. We covered the inside of the box with 4 different materials.
First we covered it with white paper. Then we chose 2 different colors. I chose purple and yellow because they are complementary colors so I thought it would be better to experiment it with a complementary color duo. And lastly, we chose a texture. I chose a green colored waved surface for the texture-a corrugated cardboard.
At the end of the experiment, we learned how light effects different surfaces with different colors and texture. It creates different shapes of shadows and shades on different textured surfaces. Also light creates more brighter shades and shadows on light colored surfaces.

MY FINAL JURY MODEL
I am very happy to announce that I survived this semester's basic design class with a good final jury experience. I mean it wasn't so good but it was the best I've had this semester. Now let me tell you what happened: First of all the jury members actually liked my model's main idea because as you can see in the last two photos, I manage to make a design by using only one element (which was a square prism by the way) and that made my design kind of unique. After that we had a little bit of symmetry discussion. I told them that my goal was making a design which may look randomly organized from some side views but actually when you look at from one particular view it has a kind of symmetry-like organization and it is not randomly. But after this I started to feel nervous because I thought that they would find my symmetry poor or bad- organized. But things turned out well they like it, too. I also told them that I didn't have a few corridor-like void flow but I told them that there are a lot of options for you to follow and you can go wherever you want in the design so I think my void flow amused them because they didn't question about it after that. But they also found my oblic element unnecessary and one of the jury members told me that I should have been used one more covering material. Anyways, in the end it is all over for a month now and it was good overall so I'm pleased and I hope I'll get a good grade!
This model was our make-up model for the second exam that we had. So in order to gain more points I made this house. About the house as you can see there are a lot of geometrical shapes on the house which are squares, hexagons and octagons, and they do look interesting and unique but the house is also very small. For the model, I used cupboards, acetate (for windows) and glue.
This is one of my designs that I made to understand the covering technics. As you can see this design is not good enough because it's frames are so simple but at least I learned something about covering. For example the wires that I used to create voids are not enough to define a surface. There should be more wire sticks, something close to a wire mesh or else they are as you can see too weak. But anyways I will try harder to make a better design for the final jury so every practise that I made is like taking a step forward. I just hope that my steps are big enough to reach the finish line.
We had a jury and that was my project. We were asked to define voids with the intersections between prisms (also using paper to make the voids more well-defined). The problem is jury found my project too complex and they told me that I've lost my order after awhile which is quiet true unfortunately. But anyway it wasn't so bad I suppose and the most important thing is learning your mistakes right?

A good example of structural-minded architecture, I suppose :)
The model of the famous building, Fountain Place, that I made. I made it because we had a midterm for Graphic Communication class and making the model of this building was a make up for the midterm so in order to gain a better grade i made it. I don't know my exam result yet but I actually enjoy making that. Because the building looks pretty intresting and a little bit more complicated than it looks. I wish one day I'll see this building in Dallas.
In this assignment we were asked to define voids by making intersections between different prisims. Firstly we created prisims with wooden sticks and then we tried to combine them in different ways and angles. Most of us -including me- didn't have a rule which should be easy to understand so we are going to make new designs for the next lecture. I hope to achieve creating well defined voids with clear orders due to time.
With the given materials I was asked to make an abstract design and my theme was reproduction. So I made a design which creates an octagon prisim with two cubes and eight tetrahedrons. I also didn't want it to look symmetric so I put the tetrahedrons randomly. And I really felt good while making it because I like abstract designs and not beign bound to defining voids was a good change after all these weeks.
