"Marigold, if you don't come here this instant and apologize to Sky Jade and Magic Maroon, it'll be Barb Azure who gets hold of you and she'll be much less forgiving than me!" May shouted.

She hardly ever got angry, more often just concerned. She wasn't angry now, either, not yet. She didn't know what was the matter, and Barb Azure was out at the moment, but she knew how rowdy Marigold could get.

"Now, I know I ain't your mama, and I'm not family, but I do care about you. What's gotten you so riled up, girl?"

May frowned, her brow furrowed in concern. She held her elbows, sitting.

Beatrice and Maude Ivory had a sleepover the night before at May's house. Sky Jade also came but had ended up going home due to lack of space and went home to her own bed around 9:30-10pm after falling asleep on the couch. As the girls woke up for the day, Maude Ivory and Beatrice were fast asleep.

"Beatrice?" Maude Ivory quietly asked. "Do you feel well? You don't look well. You look hot-" she whispered quietly. Maude Ivory buried herself back into bed as she covered the both of them with blankets.

Beatrice was dead asleep, mouth open, drooling into her pillow. She'd begged May and Barb Azure to let her stay over, and she'd been giddy the whole time they were together.

She'd felt a little weird after dinner, but figured it was nothing. It took a good deal of shaking for her to wake up. She blinked, bleary, trying to focus on Maude Ivory's face, which was swimming in her vision.

"Hi, Maudey," she hiccupped. "I'm okay. You sure are wavy. Prob'ly just the light. Can't we sleep in a little longer?"

There was a knock on the door.

The Briar girls were standing out in front of the Covey house. May stood behind her little sister Beatrice, who was twisting her hands together nervously in front of herself.

"Go on and say hi," May coaxed.

Beatrice cleared her throat, pale skin flushed pink. "Good morning," she said faintly.

The door was opened quickly before immediately shut in May's face. Marigold immediately opened it again "Thought ya were one of the adults adults!" She added quickly. "Everyone doin' chores- 'part from us kids" she explained slightly. "Who's that real lil one?" She teased despite being like- a year or so older. "Beatrice? Ya play with Maudey right? Sometimes- dunno the doll stuff? Ya sister is real sweet" she teased with a childish smirk. "Everyone else is doin' chores inside- I can get the kids?" She added. "I did all my chores- wanna see?" She asked Beatrice, grabbing the rat in her hands as she let it wiggle in her hands before she pushed passed May to put the rat outside. "Gotta wash my hands. Cmon-" she added, letting the two of them through.

May laughed.

"Good morning to you, too, Marigold. Good to know I'm not so grown up in your eyes."

She patted her sister's shoulder.

"This is my little sister Beatrice."

"Not so little," Beatrice mumbled. But she raised her eyes to Marigold's. Her hair was long, in waves down her back, and a darker shade of auburn than her sister's. She was really pale: almost sickly. But she smiled anyway.

"Yeah, I play with Maudey sometimes," she nodded. "I want her to teach me guitar, too. Can't play any good yet."

"Good job with your chores, Marigold," May grinned.

When the rat came out, Beatrice gave a little shriek of delight.

"That a mouse? Aww, where'd you find a little mousie like that? He's so cute!" She gasped, shyness forgotten.

"I mean ya are but ya ain't gonna tell Barb Azure if a certain someone licked all the cream off the milk-" Marigold added. "Hey" she added to Beatrice with a little smile on her face. "Ya look like Sky Jade but... Yknow with darker hair. Ya both so pale! Getta some sunlight. Ain't gonna kill ya" she teased. "Technically I play fiddle, better then CC" Marigold teased. "NO YOU AIN'T!" Cc's voice from upstairs called out. "Well 'm real good at banjo. Ya should watch me" she added to the both of them with a smirk. She often played on stage as well as harmonica- sometimes. "Thanks" she grinned. "Found 'm in the sugar-" she added. "Rat. Not mouse. Mouses usually smaller" Marigold explained. "Maudey and Sky Jade are upstairs playin'- CC is fixin' his fiddle-" she added, putting the rat outside. "Dolly Rose is milkin' Shamus and Magic Maroon is on the couch readin'" she added, opening the door a little more for her to see. "Ya wanna come play? Almost all done. Barb Azure gave us extra in house chores cuz- of... A really funny joke which she didn't enjoy-" Marigold smirked "Someone put mud on her chair and it looked like she shit herself. Wasn't 'pose to be for- 'posed to be for CC" Marigold paused "Prank war. Ain't supposed to do them but we're prankin' some of the town kids too. Yknow the little whiny brown hair girl who has that golden hoops?" She added. "Yea her. Ya know her name? No one does here" Marigold added before letting them come in. Technically no one was supposed to come in but it was May- Barb Azure would be less pissy.... Right?

May just laughed. She liked Marigold. She was fierce.

"You're a piece of work, girl," May sighed.

Beatrice seemed pretty fascinated with her, too. Her big green eyes stayed riveted on the other girl.

"Oh. Never seen a rat like that. Naughty of him to be eating your sugar," Beatrice giggled. "Real cute, though."

She seemed to clam up a bit again. "Sure, I'd like to play," She whispered.

"Never a dull moment here, is there?" May asked, raising an eyebrow. "Mostly 'cause of you, huh, Marigold. Hope Barb Azure has you scrubbing that chair and her dress!" She laughed.

The Briar girls came in. Beatrice looked around, eyes still big as saucers.

"No, I don't know who that is," May said. "Sure Dolly Rose isn't familiar?"

since it's come up a bit, here's some info on May's little sister beatrice!

May’s baby sister. She's reserved and shy, but a lover of music and a friend of Maude Ivory’s. Clumsy, hence the bruised knees, and often sick. She's the one who originally convinced May to go see one of the Covey’s concerts. She loves the water, and she can't carry a tune to save her life but she wishes she could. Maude Ivory promised to teach her guitar. She was reaped at 16 in the 16th Hunger Games. May was too old to volunteer. Bea died in the Games.

She and May are about nine years apart, so May is half sister, half mother figure, especially since their parents were not very present during their upbringing.

May! What's your little sister like? She seems so sweet

Aw, Beatrice? She's real nice, she is. Quite shy about it, though! She's about ten now. We're pretty far apart in age, but I love her to bits.

She's actually how I met Barb Azure, did you know? She's a great lover of music, Beatrice, and she begged and begged for me to come see one of the Covey shows a couple years ago. She's a big fan. I know she's especially impressed by Miss Maude Ivory.

Anyone home?

I've got a lovely green dress here I thought Dolly Rose might like. It's not too old, but my younger sister Beatrice has already outgrown it. Seemed a shame to use something so new for scraps, so I figured I'd ask y'all.

Dolly Rose came to the door. She quickly opened it to May "Hello!" She greeted her quickly with a smile. Dolly Rose immediately looked at the dress, her eyes lit up. It looked- normal. It didn't look like something the covey would wear and it looked really nice. "Oh! It's so pretty- what for it?" The girl asked before inviting May in. There was toys everywhere around the house and it clearly showed everyone was feeling much better. "You caught me at a good time! I was just about to go out" the girl added with a smile.

"Good morning, Dolly Rose!"

May held up the dress. It was a pastel sort of green, with straps and a pretty, ruffled neckline. It was a summery sort of dress, for warm weather or perhaps performing at the Hob.

"Glad you like it," May said, stepping inside.

"How about just a hug to pay for it? I've missed you, girl. District so sick, I haven't been able to see any of y'all. Is everybody doing better?"

May carefully put the dress over her arm, looking around.

"Oh, where're you going?"

"It's- adorable!" The girl added quickly a little smile appearing on her face. "Looks like I'm a town girl!" She added quickly. She could wear it to Mayfair's if the girl invited her over.

She immediately hugged her, a huge smile appearing on her face. "Thank you! Truly-" the girl added, grabbing her little cross body bag. It was basically and just brown, she used this for most things when doing chores. The bag was small and slightly stylish, more practical though. "I'm picking up some things for the little ones and maybe some soup" she added. "Everyone is feeling better but Sky Jade is still taking naps. I think she's still in bed- put her down like 1 hours ago. You can go wake her up if you'd like" The girl added. "Most of the kids are out playing. Barb Azure made them to stay slightly closer to home though" she added, a little smile on her face.

Sky Jade's room was quiet and dark as the curtains were drawn, she woke up as May came in. Her little face lit up as she crawled into May's arms "Hi" she quickly greeted, a little giggle on her face. She settled into her chest quietly.

"Stand still a second."

May held the straps up against Dolly Rose's shoulders so it looked like she was wearing it. May grinned.

"Aw, it's adorable! It'll fit you fine, but I can take it in if you need me to. Just let me know."

She looked around the house, which was clean and barely furnished, but still cozy. It was getting warmer, and the toys on the floor spoke of health regained.

"Errands? So happy y'all are well again. I'll just leave the dress here, and you can try it on once you're back."

May neatly folded the green dress and set it on a chair arm.

"I'll go see Sky Jade, then, if you're sure she won't mind. Is Barb Azure home? She told me she'd be here in the afternoon, but I guess it's still a little early."

May walked to the bedrooms, knocking gently on the door to Sky Jade's room. She slipped in, opening the door as little as possible to minimize light. She saw the little girl awake and smiled.

"Hey there, sweetheart," She whispered, sitting on the bed beside the girl. "You look better. Feeling okay? I'm glad to see you."

Dolly Rose smirked childishly as she saw the dress against her. "It's really pretty. All the town girls are wearing this?" She questioned pushing hair away from her eyes slightly. "I think it'll fit perfectly" she explained with a little smile. "Barb Azure left with Maude Ivory and Lucy Gray to do laundry about 30 minutes ago. You've missed her-" she added as she grabbed a small little piece of paper, having some groceries on it. "I need to pick up some milk, bread and some meat- the chicken is half priced this week" she explained, a little smile on her face. She was glad all the Covey was getting better. They haven't performed yet, wanting to make sure they truly got well enough beforehand.

"What time is it?" Sky Jade asked, rubbing her little eyes. She seems quite tired as she woke up from her nap. She cuddled closer to the girl's chest. "Wait how ya know I was sick?" Sky Jade asked. "Not puked for days" she added proudly with a toothy smile. She struggled to get comfy before settling. "Did ya get sick?" She asked.

“Yeah. I mean, it’s not just like what the town girls are putting on, but it’s as close to new as we’ve got, Dolly Rose. And you’d look prettier than a summer’s day in a potato sack, anyway. Well, I’m sad to miss Barb Azure. Where are the rest of you?”

May stepped aside, letting Dolly Rose pass her. “Sounds good. I won’t take any more of your time, then.”

Sitting with Sky Jade, she pushed wisps of blonde hair from the girl’s eyes.

“It’s morning,” May whispered. “Probably around eleven. Still sleepy, huh?” She laughed quietly, letting the girl wriggle closer and wrapping her in her arms. “Girl, almost everyone’s been sick. You longer than most. Barb Azure was real worried about you, you know? Told me all about it. So I’m real glad you’re okay. Good on you.”

May rubbed her eyes, sighing. “No, I got lucky, I did. Beatrice had it pretty bad, so I had to take care of her. That’s why I haven’t been ‘round as often.”

She reached around in the dark until her fingers closed on Bunny. She pushed the plushie into Sky Jade’s arms.

“I brought Dolly Rose a new dress. You wanna come down and play a bit with me? Feel up to it?”
