Okay, I said I’m done, I said I want to forget about it (I really do) but…

Of all the changes this movie made, the one I am the MOST angry about?

Not leaving out William, which IS a crime, but no. That’s on par with all the dreadful rest.

No, what really gets me, what makes me want to bash my head against the wall is what this movie did to Edmund. WHY?!

The decision that he was, for years (!), supposed to be romantically in love with Fanny and very much aware of it… That he basically only meant to marry Mary because his father wished him to… That’s just wrong. And such a weird, useless, senseless decision.

I’m not one to argue that he didn’t love Fanny romantically in the novel far earlier than he realizes, but the point is, he really doesn’t realize it. I actually have the theory that he was aware that he wasn’t supposed to think about Fanny that way and thus he didn’t, but that’s for a different post altogether, it’s not the point.

The point is, Edmund, after having his heart broken by Mary, needed time to realize what Fanny truly meant to him. And he did get his heart broken. Mary and Edmund had a true romance, a doomed one because neither went realistically about it, they both refused to see what was right before them, but they chose to be blind because they really, really liked what they DID see. Edmund did fall in love with his idea of Mary and he did so of his own volition. Yes, his father was of the opinion that it would be a good match, but that’s it. Sir Thomas wasn’t even supposed to be around when Edmund fell in love.

And it’s important that Edmund really falls in love with Mary. So much gets lost if he doesn’t. So many things become meaningless. I’d even go so far to say that most of what happens in the novel… Wouldn’t have happened if Edmund had not truly fallen in love with Mary Crawford. It’s far more than just erasing most of his flaws (and some of his good qualities as well). It also takes away so much of Fanny’s suffering and inner struggles. If Edmund only meant to do his “duty”… Then nothing really matters. Then Mansfield Park is nothing more than the story of two star-crossed lovers who struggle against the injustice of the world, no real growth needed on either side, for it is only society and it’s expectations that stands in their way, not they themselves.

made myself angry. fanny price is a really difficult type of character to adapt to screen bc she is so internal and her arc is mostly static. she instead of learning something has to struggle to stay the same and stick to her morals in situations that tempt and test her. she has a minor arc of learning to speak up for herself but compared to other jane austen heroines it is quite undramatic as in, she is not involved in much of the Interesting Plotlines and instead is just an observer which is THE POINT OF HER CHARACTER and i GET IT that's a hard protagonist to make a film/tv show about. i really sympathise. but if you're not willing to TRY then why make a mansfield park adaptation at all? why not make the billionth p&p or emma adaption??? or branch slightly out and make a northanger abbey or a weird s&s that focuses on marianne but WHY adapt MISS FANNY PRICE if you DONT LIKE HER as a character?
