@lbardugo okay I’ve wanted to talk about THIS FOREVER. as a russian, reading shadow and bone was literally so painful in a lot of parts. I know she was going for russian “inspired” and not totally russian but at a lot of points her ignorance about the real meanings of words and lack of research was almost offensive. there’s just so so many examples I could give her but some of the most prevalent were:

her naming a character privyet. this made me want to bash my head into a wall everytime I read it. privyet literally just means HELLO, HI, HEY. it is not a name. it was painful to see it as a name.

the whole thing with kvas also really annoyed me. (ONCE AGAIN I GET THAT IT WAS “INSPIRED” AND NOT MEANT TO BE TOTALLY ACCURATE) but kvas is meant to be like a whiskey/vodka/hard alcohol in the grishaverse whereas it is a very real and common drink in russian culture that is totally nonalcoholic and usually drunk by kids. even HEAVILY fermented kvas wouldn’t give you more than a buzz. so seeing something that’s like the russian equivalent of coke get people black out drunk was a bit weird. the whole grishaverse thing also really bothered me because it does literally mean greg and everytime I read it I’d cringe. I guess this one‘s more funny than anything else. greg-verse.

at the end of ruin and rising alina drapes a “sarafan” over her shoulders. it does not mean shawl. it does not mean coat. I even researched it to make sure there weren’t any other interpretations of the word. but alas there aren’t. it literally just means sundress. alina draped a sundress on herself. maybe its a fashion statement who am I to say.

if I kept going this would be 500 parts because of how often she throws russian words on the page italicized and calls it a day even when they don’t make sense or are similar versions of what the word could mean or in totally wrong form. I would not at all mind seeing russian culture portrayed in the grishaverse if it wasn’t just straight appropriation and so minimally researched it was downright offensive.

this isn’t meant to be hate because I do love the world she’s created and I recognize that she’s grown as an author but I’ve never seen it mentioned by anyone before and definitely needs to be put out there.
