btw, the armor design is based on how some creatures have very bright or eye-/face-like patterns to appear venomous or large to protect themselves from predators :)

new year, new sketchbook (i never managed to finish the old one)

new year hasn't even started yet, and i'm already so so done with it

small semi-sketch (with color correction variations because i couldn't choose) depicting a few of my longest-standing ideas

idea 1 (small and simple): i like to think that dream has a "permanent smile". but not like a frozen grimace, he just naturally has slightly raised corners of his lips, which creates the impression that he is smiling slightly

idea 2 (this will be long and most likely confusing): when i think about how to depict his chat, i always come up with very abstract, more symbolic images (like this one). the reason for this is that i honestly always imagined that his chat is essentially more like eyes (and i know that eyes fixed as image of techno's voices, but voices speak, while dream's chat is just watching). our eyes. the eyes of viewers, looking for his appearances in other people's streams. it seems to me that thanks to his chat, dream knows what's going on on the server (since we are watching it). my first attempt at depicting it was an eyeball in the mouth (observing and transmitting information), which is somewhat preserved, but now it's more just something between the eyelashes and the teeth. idk if it makes sense but yeah

a little bit of the thought process behind some of the decisions below

i've seen a few different takes on this moment and while i like action-packed, violent beating-to-death scenes, it's not really my style. plus, usually in those scenes, tommy looks like a "poor innocent kid". i decided to try something different here. it's implied that he fought back (in the scene itself, we see his hands unclenching around dream's throat), but dream crushed his skull.

as for tommy's wings, i allowed myself to be a little petty, i admit. i once came across a post that said something like "we shouldn't be designing tommy-demon, but tommy-angel, who everyone thinks is a demon" or something like that. and i honestly get pretty annoyed by the "he's just a poor baby, he can't do anything wrong" attitude. so. a demon in angel feathers that is. (also a slight implication that he himself didn't know he wasn't an angel as a metaphor for the attitude towards him as "he's the victim here, he's the offended party" when he's not hehe)
