Hey guys, haven’t seen this floating around yet…. Grayson Perry has an exhibit at the Manchester Art Gallery dedicated to his Art Club series and Noel is featured as one of the many artists on display.
All the works on display are very personal visual representations of lockdown, made by the public, well-known artists and celebrities for Grayson’s Art Club. This celebration of creativity in people’s homes chronicled the changing moods of Britain in isolation, providing a unique record of this globally experienced extraordinary time.
Sadly the exhibit was due to open right when the last lockdown happened so the gallery has had to remain closed. You can find an online tour of it here though.
They also have some merchandise available to purchase to help support the gallery… ever wanted a mask with Noel’s Acid Mouse or Grace & Jean-Michel on it? (I have the Acid Mouse one and it’s REALLY cool.)
There’s also a beautiful book that includes some pics of Noel’s art and his lock-down segment available with a nice interview. He explains why the Boosh and his career has been built on his love of fantasy art and how he gets in a good place to create it. A quick excerpt:
“Fantasy is about using your imagination and once you get all the cliches out the way, all of the unicorns, all of that stuff, then it gets interesting and you’re sort of delving into your subconscious or something.
I think you have to put yourself into a bubble, a place where you can play all the time, so you have to keep real life a little bit at bay.”
Supporting the arts is so critical right now. The book is definitely worth way more than the price. It’s filled with gorgeous art and anecdotes from Grayson and all the artists. (Joe Lycett and Vic Reeves to name a couple others.)
